View Full Version : I want to get a Cat
I want to get a cat, but I don't know what type would be best suited for my personality. Any suggestions? I am planning to go to the humane society and finding one.
Idealy an orange cat so I can call it Salsa! I am not home much, but I do want something that will acknoledge me when i come home. I don't want the cat to go and run. Maybe sleep on the bed with me, or the couch at least.
Any ideas????
I think whatever cat you get there is no way of telling what it will be like.
I have two cats, one runs away and stays out alot and the other stays in and eats alot!
The one that runs away does like to sleep on my bed though. :)

crime_scene 07-03-06, 10:21 PM I have 2 cats, and they do keep each other company somewhat, but really, they do need to see me and interact with me.
They are indoor cats, so I have to clean their sandbox 2x day, feed them, put out fresh water, play with them, hug and cuddle them, scritch their heads, examine them for sickness, lumps and bumps, monitor their bowel activity so noone gets stopped up (it happens), watch their eating patterns for signs of illness, furball problems, clean up poop if they have a catbox accident, clean up their barf (oh yeah, they do that), vaccumm and dust for shed fur, brush their fur, take them to vet for regular and irregular visits, give them medicine, clean the furniture, brush their coats, arrange for someone to look after them if I am out of town....
But on the other hand, they follow me around the house like puppies and are basically anywhere I am. They watch me leave in the morning and they are delighted to see me when I get home, in fact, they sit in the window and watch for me.
Anyway, my point is that that they take a significant amount of your personal time and finances on an ongoing basis.
They are little fuzzy children, forever.
chloe516 07-03-06, 11:08 PM My cat requires a lot of attention too. She actually has a hard time when I'm at work and loses a lot of her cuddly personality if left alone too much. I would definitely recommend waiting to get a cat until you are able to spend time with it.
Iwalani8 07-04-06, 03:39 AM i got a little 1/2 manx 1/2 tabby a year ago, and she is the best. she's cuddly sometimes and crazy at other times. manx are loyal like dogs, and jump really high. they have little nubbins for tails so it is really entertaining to watch them do anything. here's kitty (which is her name):

go to petfinder (http://petfinder.org) and you can search for adoptable kitties in your area by breed , age, etc...
She is beautiful!
Don't forget to check out adoptable adult cats.
A friend gave me a book that changed the way I look at cats.
Nine Emotional Lives of Cats by Jeffrey Masson.
Chele77 07-05-06, 07:56 AM Wow, Iwalani8, my mom had a cat that looked just like yours and her name was 'Kitty'. Just thought that was a crazy coincidence.
bythesea 07-05-06, 04:17 PM I have 2 cats and Crime Scene gave a good description. If you are working during the day I think 2 cats are better than 1 because they keep each other company (if they get along). Also the person who mentioned getting an adult cat instead of a kitten has a point. You'll have a better idea what their personality is like and don't have to go through the kitten trying to climb up your bathrobe phase and spaying/neutering would probably also already be done. As for the breed, you can probably find a range of personalities and characteristics in any breed. Mine are just regular old domestic short-hairs (aka mutt cats), free from a family who's cat had kittens.
You might get a couple books on cats/kittens before you take the plunge. I grew up with cats but still found this helpful when I got my cats.
I will second the point that having cats adds to the house work because of litterbox cleaning and trying to keep up with the shedding fur. Just something to think about if you're one of the ADD folks who struggles with "messiness." Also make sure to add in cat food, cat treats, cat litter, cat toys, scratching posts and cats shots into your budget.
william tell 07-05-06, 05:19 PM Get a American Stafordshire terrier , they are great dogs, are strong and good with children , well older kids since the breed is energetic but is of medium size. The terrier is known for its energy level and determination and supreme rodent control.
Mine find the dastardly moles that gave me such a headache in the past.
sehrita 07-05-06, 07:29 PM I have 4 cats which I love tremendously.
I do not stay the night at my house much, maybe 3 days a week. The rest of the time I am at my boyfriends house. I leave out plenty of food and water for them and make time to visit them at least 2 of the 4 days I am gone... When I come home they always greet me, sleep with me on my bed, and cuddle with me on my couch.
Cats do take work, but not as much as a dog does. You don't usually have to worry about them being housebroken... keep a litter box handy and your good to go. They are also far more independent. (don't get me wrong, I love dogs too). The only bad thing to owning cats is cleaning the litter box, possible wreckage of furniture if you don't get them declawed, and if you don't get them spayed and neutored you will have female cats in heat and male cats spraying your house...very stinky.
My boyfriend would come to my house to stay the night, except he is severly allergic to cats. My mom might end up adopting them from me because I cannot bear to break them up and I will also be able to visit as much as I want..

Manxs are great cats. I used to own one until he died years ago. He was "big papa" to all the other cats. The other cats would follow him around hoping for cuddles and grooming.
Iwalani8 07-05-06, 10:27 PM ya, manx are great!!
chele, that is crazy! i wonder if their personalities are the same...
i hope whoever is considering a pet looks into adopting instead of buying from a breeder or pet store. there are so many wonderful animals from babies to seniors that need homes!
WOW. Thanks for the info all of u. This has kinda made me rethink my getting a cat idea. At least for a little while.
