25, and female, although my name means "The manly" and even though I'm in no way butch or a tomboy or anything like that (I did climb my fair share of trees as a kid, preferred woodwork to knitting and housekeeping classes and didn't much care for dolls, but since I hardly had any friends anyway I was neither "one of the girls" nor "one of the lads"), I am definitely one of the least "girly" women I know! :p

Might as well put in another informal observation I have made in support of my ongoing interest (yes -- a "project") in looking for links between AD/HD and other "syndromes/disorders/advantages".

I suspect that people with AD/HD tend to look better and keep their looks longer and seem younger than others the same age. I don't think it is just "being 32 and acting 12" (I am so guilty of that myself, even at 52, and even on meds).

In fact, my one of my favorite party amusements is to make new acquaintances guess my age, and enjoy the expressions on their faces when I tell them the answer (the enertainment value is so high that it overcomes any vain desires on my part to pretend to be young and virile :D).

My mother's side of my 2-sided AD/HD family does very well in that department as well. She's in her 70's now but only is now looking it.

Why is this a (possible) connection to something else? I have read over a lot of both clinical and non-professional literature on autism (of all flavors). Certain phrases stand out, for example: "autistic children seem unusually attractive...".

Another connection I have been trying to discover is between "sleepy sickness" (encephalitis lethargica) and AD/HD -- the obvious link is one of the "recovery" modes, a "behavioral disorder" very closely resembling extreme cases of classic ADHD hyperactivity.

BTW, the usual recovery mode is Parkinsonism, and Parkinsonism is a well-known disorder in some of the dopamine centers of the brain.

This, by itself, means little, since dopamine is so widely used in the brain that two dopamine-related disorders do not necessarily have any other relationship. Which is of course, why it is necessary to have other correlations in support of the hypothesis (like the "misbehavior" recovery mode).

Of course, by now some of you realize I am relying on Oliver Sack's book "Awakenings", and from there comes the third link: He notes in many of his clinical cases (Parkinsoninan as well as "hyper") an unusually youthful and/or attractive appearance for the subject's age. Most importantly, he goes so far as to suggest that the tendency is characteristic. But of course, he hasn't any idea why this is so....

And neither do I.

Comments? Do we need Yet Another Poll?

FlakeyGirl
12-12-03, 01:53 PM
I get this all the time: A stranger will ask if all 5 kids are mine and proceed to look at me or further comment disapprovingly when I respond in the affirmative. Several people have gone so far as to suggest methods of birth control or that I take up a different hobby. I then follow up with my age, 32, and will either get relieved or skeptical looks. What is that ?

I guess we're hard to figure out. We don't "play by the rules". We're fidgety because we "weren't brought up right", we don't pay attention to things because "we don't care about anything", even things we should know are vitally important to us, we're "shifty-eyed" instead of overwhelmed sensorily by someone else's direct look, etc. There are no "rules" for judging AD/HDs as they are, and a lot of the "normals" (there I go labeling.....) don't want to admit the rules they rely on for feeling "normal" aren't as real as they want them to be.....

Kinda sad (for both sides, although more hazardous for OUR side). Maybe your life hasn't been as full of the clueless as mine, so you can take this as negativity resulting from my own personal set of bad experiences....

Terminally adolescent at 50.
I get met with incredulousness when I mention I have a son who's 31 (also AD/HD).
Don't know if that's because I look younger or they just can't believe I could ever have coped with that much responsibility.
BTW I appear to have a super constitution. Despite the ways I have abused my body over the years (me's good now).
Anyone else seem to dodge the usual consequences of a misspent life?

I've always been told I look younger than my age too. I've taken some comfort in that .... being aimless is cuter on a young person, isn't it? :D Many of the moms I hang out with now are in their 20s, and they never guess I'm cough gasp wheeze 40! Still can't believe it myself. I demand a recount!

My mother (who was a bit inattentive, but not to the same extent) always looked younger than her years too. And my 5-y.o. (who acts very ADD) is unusually good-looking. I say that with total objectivity. :D

I'm 18, but people normally say I look and behave older...I behave older sometimes, and other times I behave 9-10 years old. It's good, though, because workign with kids, it's alright to kind of work on their level and understand. Plus it's more fun. Oh yes and there is a crazy camouflaged bird on my neighbor's roof outside, it's like the exact same color as his roofing. If it wasn't moving I wouldn't be able to see it. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

.

Well, 101 respondants and 10 or so "buckets" (age categories) will give the Normal curve a good opportunity to impose itself. But it also looks like a lot of age distributions, a lot which have humps in the middle and trail off in either direction, but aren't Normal either.

I bet (and we would need a lot more respondants) if you break things down by economic status, etc (but, of course, not age...), you'd see more diversity.

What I notice is 0s in the youngest and oldest categories. Not too many 10 year olds with internet access and savvy and the desire to cruise a forum full of grown-ups. I'd guess there aren't too many 60+ers with computer experience, since it wasn't available when they were teens.

I'm still in the double digits, age wise.

Spread among three of my siblings, I have two nieces and seven nephews. . . .

Next month, I am to become a great-aunt! Wowee!

Not to mention I'm the primary caretaker of three full-time outdoor cats, ages 2, 10, and 11; and five full-time indoor cats, ages 5, 10, 15, 15, and 18! Most of these cats I've had since they were a year old or younger.

Let's just say that at my current age, I feel younger than I did when I was in my 20s.

I'm in the second largest age group, but yet I've yet to find many. where are all the 18-25 year olds out there??? i'm 21, and feel like my age group is somewhat a minority, boy was I wrong.

I'm 19, though my dad says I act like I'm 8. Hey, if I wanna watch cartoons, I'm gonna watch cartoons!
