Anyone have both ADHD and Hyper/hypothyroidism? I have been diagnosed with ADHD about 5 months ago, and recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I believe it runs in my family. My doc suspects I have both, and that the hyperthyroidism is not the cause for the inattentiveness and my ADD symptoms. I am going to see an endocrinologist, but I am worried that he wont allow me to keep taking my ADHD medication (Adderall XR). I can barely focus in school and get frustrated without my meds. Has anyone else been diagnosed with both AD/HD and hyper/hypothyroidism? If so, are you still on ADHD medications while being treated for hyperthyroidism? Any info would help.

Is that like when they take your thyroid out?
My friend had hers taken out years ago and so has to take medication for that. After I was disagnosed adhd I convinced her to check out Dr. Amens site. Didn't take much to convince her and she got an evaluation and concerta. Don't know if that answers your question or not. She takes medicaiton for both.

The doc says that I have an overactive thyroid which means the thyroid makes too much of the thyroid hormone. I believe I will be put on medication for hyperthyroidism, but I am wondering if the doc would tell me to stop taking Adderall because Thyroid problems sometimes mimic ADHD like symptoms. I am just worried about visiting the doctor for my hyperthyroidism because I am sure I have ADHD and do not wish to stop medication for it. After being diagnosed with ADHD, I feel like I understand so many aspects of my life and the meds help a lot. Could a person be diagnosed with both hyperthyroidism and ADHD and still take medications for both conditions? Adderall XR precaution lable says that Adderall is not recommended for people who have overactive thyroid.

Have you discussed any of this with your doctor? How about with the endocrinologist?
I'm guessing both of them would be medically able to answer all questios relating to your case, and they have your complete medical history in front of them.
