I read about how people with Autism think in pictures? I don't know if that's the same as when someone mentions something such as a dog, and you see a dog in your head all of a sudden. Is that what it's like?
Also, I read about someone here who said they were fascinating by empty boxes. Some are fascinated by washers and/or dryers. What is it about these type of things that fascinates you? I'm trying to understand. I want to know more about Autism.
I can only speak for myself. So here
are my thought. I would say that
I can think in pictures and not that
I only think in pictures. In general
if you were talking to me my picture
thinking would shut down. That may
have something to do with the social
skills problems people with autism
have.
I'm not sure why we become
fascinated or why we choose a
certain subject. When that subject
is important to the world we do
some productive things. When its
not it can be a problem. It tends
to isolate you from the world. As
a kid I liked lego's. Its something
you basically do by yourself. Later
I liked chemistry. 99.9% of the
world is not going to want to talk
about chemistry.
Thinking in pictures is a cognitive style. It is often referred to as "visualspatial thinking".
Autistics do it well (I don't know if all autistics think in pictures), but people with ADHD often tend to do it too... There is a thread on the subject in the ADD forums:

The really important bit is that Autistics do think IMO.
For a great read go here

Please read all the way through! Fascinating and honest perspective.

The "getting the truth out" web site is not getting the whole truth out.
That is not the original version web site. The original version of that was written by the autistic woman herself. I think they must have changed it to soften it. That is too bad, she had a lot to say.

ME :DThere used to be more? I saw her and her message by going all the way through the site Speedo, even the one finger typing without looking.
Hope they left that stuff in!

Oh nevermind me. I just went to th esite and paged through it, and her version of it is after the part written by the non autistic. I'll get off my soapbox now and go eat some crow. In any case her version of it is great. :) She really added a lot to the end since I saw this page last.
