View Full Version : Question for my Dad
I told my Dad about this forum since he has ADD too but I dont think that he will get on (not very computer literate). Anyway he asked me if I could see if this could be related to his ADD.
He has owned boats for years and likes to fix them up, well he says that he goes crazy is everything is not perfect with his boat. I mean running perfectly (he is a mechanic) and looks perfect.
I have looked through previous threads and did not see anything that relates and I was not sure where to post this. I thought that maybe it could be a sign of OCD but I dont think it is that involved. I am the complete opposite of him, I could care less if everything is spotless. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem or if you have an idea of what it could be so I can find more information for him. Thank you.
Crazy~Feet 07-13-06, 11:30 AM Hey Effie :) my dad also admits he probably had ADD but is functional and not addressing it at this time. He is extremely attached to keeping order too. This man is computer literate (systems analyst LOL) and he has every last detail of his life on spreadsheets.
His house is spotless as well. I would venture that for the older generations, that type of rigidity is a coping mechanism for survival.
Just my 2C, always free.
Crazy :D

Crazy :D:( OMG!! yep, that's me..
I tended to overcompensate..badly..rigid..rosters..lists..char ts..order..place for everything...rules...times for everything..
OMG! I sound like an army major...but, it worked, and everyone thinks I am the most organized person they know..
It's a shame it ran my life..but I'm a heap heap better with meds :D
HighFunctioning 07-15-06, 03:36 PM Well, OCD is supposed to be an anxiety disorder, and compulsions are a result of the anxiety produced not fullfilling those compulsions. The anxiety also relates to the repetitive thoughts (obsessions). Most with OCD have both compulsions and obsessions, but it is possible to be diagnosed with such with only obsessions.
Moving on, OCD is not the same as perfectionism. If your a perfectionist because you relieve yourself of anxiety by quadruple-checking everything, then that is OCD-like. If not, it could be a normal compensation for ADD. I am a perfectionist myself, but I am far from spotless. Some tasks are too boring for me to be obsessive about, but once that fear kicks in -- like knowing that someone is coming to my apartment when it is a mess -- I will work nonstop at cleaning the mess up, checking and rechecking. There are other tasks in which I am highly perfectionistic, though, without any anxiety whatsoever, which is qualitively different (passonate subjects).

I need the organization as well. Your experience is common in ADD, though as Dr. Amen (gasp) states (mostly about "overfocused" ADD), usually those with ADD who are like this appear highly organized in one context and a complete mess in others. In ways, I appear organized because I am concerned with organization to begin with (because I do learn from experience that I'm more disadvantaged than most without it).
william tell 07-15-06, 04:17 PM I am a tradesman - an commercial electrician - and I am a perfectionist about things that I do at my home, that is not to say everything is 100% done :D but I like it to look flawless when it is done.
wheresmykeys 07-17-06, 01:12 AM I am a perfectionist like that. I think it's probably got a lot to do with ADD, it seems most of us are not afraid to admit that we're rather anal retentive about things.
I go crazy if things aren't perfect when I do them too, I am told I am wierd and nuts all the time for the things I have to have absolutely perfect.
For example, I am a university student and my notes have to be absolutely perfect..they have to be organized just right, written really neatly and orderly, underlined in all the right places, etc.. Most people just scribble words on the page, but unless the notes are really nice I honestly wont retain anything I study off of them. As wierd as that is, it's true.
I don't think it's OCD unless it causes him anxiety if something isn't perfect. If it irritates him I'd assume ADD because we often lack patience and our emotions are often stronger than non-adders. What may be a minor nuisance to a non-adder may make him blow a gasket. I find that with people around me, i usually react more strongly than then. Im generally a calm natured person and I try to contain it, but I do get a lot more uptight about things than others.
If by making him crazy you mean if it's not perfect he can't rest until it is and thinks and worries about it all the time then maybe OCD, but if he's just anal about it, probably just ADD.
Thats my theory anyway.
We are talking about dad's. Good idea. My dad's a definate type A personality. But he has a very negative aspect to his oraniztion and control. I am also a type A pesonality. Perfectionism runs in our family and it is a curse I tell you!. I on the other hand am quite positive about my order seeking tendancies. It's funny becausae I did a square early in school about this. You know disect a frog find out your families blood types.
(by the way I did dissect the frog even though I didn't want to. I was a very sensitive child).
I had heard there were virtual frog dissecting programs for the more sensitive types but I thought hey if I wanted to get anywhere in tsciences I would have to dissect the frog for real.
Resullts of "square" can't remeber the full name but I'm sure everyone else here can. Results were that if he was to be my real father he would have to be A- and myself I am A+. Maybe that has something to do with something? OR not.
Other things about this thread. Boats,,my dad had many myriad boats that needed to be upkept and well treated. We lived on a majestical little bay just north of california. A small town: Population 50. I wonder if that sign is still there? Because of course the pop must change but it seems like the sign never does.
Back to my dad and his vehicular obsessions. Boats with motors. sppedboats houseboats, even a yacht that I beleive wasn't exactly his but a part of the boat family. It was called something: a womans name nora. that's it and they changed it to ? and then it burn to the ground (or water rather it was in dock) Because it is bad luck to change a boats name. So they rebuild her? No I guess they must have bought a new boat-- oh yeah that's the "funny part"
. So not wanting to have the same hex(bad luck) twice what do they do ?what?
*It's a riddle*. I'll give someone a chance to answer and then I'll post the reply in a bit.
I've got some technical idiot stuff to ask.
aaaand
