View Full Version : Prescribing ADD meds
JustNeedHelp 07-16-06, 07:20 PM ok I have tried so long to get my add undercontroll the doctor has put me on
concerta, strattera ritalin focalin, adderall, and now provigil. the doctor offered dexedrine but i had yet to try adderall at the time so i said i would rather try adderall first she said ok and put me on adderall that didnt work so now on provigil the doctor is not willing to work with me in my opinion i asked about combining 2 meds to combat the add and she jsut flat out said no her reason was ' stimulant + stimulant = not good' so who else can i go to, to get a prescribtion for a controlled substance ( i heard only special doctors can give out add perscriptions-controlled substance) i am currently going to a mental health doctor - i dont know how to spell there proper name so i just said mental health doctor but who can prescribe add meds?
All psychiatrists are capable of prescribing any meds.
Whether they are willing to write the prescriptions, or not, is up to the individual Psych-Doc.

When I used a general practitioner-MD, in the past- he still needed a letter from a Psych-Doc, to prescribe the meds for ADD/HD, since it wasn't his specialty.
It was a requirement, from my medical insurance- not his own personal conflict, with doing so.

sbgrace777 07-19-06, 09:59 AM How long/how many days were you on each of those meds to find out what worked best?
Sorry you've been having a rough time with the docs. I finally went to get a evaluation done yesterday (it's been almost 6 months of debating whether or not I should go in to see whether I have ADHD or ....?). Turns out that I'm combined inattentive. Got some pills; kinda excited to try one this morning, yet curious and afraid of tweaking my brain chemistry.
Hope you find the right med; Did you get labs done before you went on the stimulants? I encourage you to ask your Psych doc or General Practitioner to request a set of labs (like blood work-up), so that you can get baseline readings for you to compare; it might help for both of you to see.

JustNeedHelp 07-20-06, 11:24 PM accually my doc never did anything but ask me a few yes or no questions, after about 20 questions she said ok you have ADD let put you on ritalin
but lets see:
ritalin - several years as a kid, stopped after telling parens i could control it myself, got back on em about 4 years later (freshamn year) now a junior
strattera - two weeks max, it made me too tired to i started to take it at night (couldnt remember to take it so ii stopped) it worked tho i could tell a big improvement but just too hard to remember to take
concerta a.k.a. 'the death pill' - a few months (3 or 4), i had about 14 side effects after dose was raised to 70 something mg's (fluid retention, bad breath, twitches, gaw 'gritting', zombified, non talkative, constipation (still working on trying to fix that one), sweating and so much more I DO NOT RECOMMEND CONCERTA TO ANYONE OF ANY AGE NO MATTER HOW SEVER AD(H)D IS!!!!!! concerta took away about 4 months of my life (as i was a zombie from the moment i got up to the moment i went to bed) horrible stuff
focalin - about 2 weeks bad headaches
adderall - about 2 months 2nd wierdest drug ive been on, it worked first day i took it with 5mg's EXCELLENT the next day nothing! ive taken upto 20 mg's and still nothing
provigil - still on total of about 5 days- causing muscle inflamation and pain in muscles i believe going to talk with doc soon (i heard muscle inflammation can lead to carpell tunnel or other painfull muscle related injuries within a month of use!) very scared on how to stop taking (should i jsut stop or slowly lower dose)
EDIT
are family doctors willing to prescribe dexedrine? i know its amphetamine so it will be harder to get but thats the only thing besides desoxyn i havent tried! should i get note from psyc doc saying im add first jsut to be safe?
mom21wildboy 07-20-06, 11:55 PM All MDs are able to prescribe any meds., whether controlled substances or not. But I would check with your insurance to be sure that they allow this. My current doctor is an MD, not a psych. but he specializes in ADHD cases because his son has it. He also doesn't take insurance but mine pays for my Rxs. And there are a ton of other meds out there that can be used either with or without stimulants for ADHD...anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antipsychotics, to name a few, so don't feel like this is it for you. It took several years to find a good combo for me and the right doctor. Just be your own best advocate and never settle. :D Make sure to keep track of your daily side effects, moods, dosages, etc. whenever you start on a new med, especially if you are on more than one. This really helps to figure out what works and what doesn't a lot quicker. Good luck!

Of course that depends on whether she feels its appropriate is willing to prescribe it... All three are Schedule II drugs and share the same regulations.
Just curious, you mentioned that you had been on Ritalin previously, what kinds of problems did you have with it?
JustNeedHelp 07-21-06, 07:24 PM overall i was on ritalin for about 4 or 5 years stops and ten got back on for a year or so then stopped, side effects with ritalin were slim to nothing, including the effectiveness, it just flat out didnt work i dont understand it but after a while i realized hey this doesnt do anything for me (but then again i wasnt sure 'how well' or to 'what extent' meds can help ADD so i just figured that the 40 mg's ritalin was the end of the line it was either that or nothing so i jsut delt with it, but after a while it jsut stopped working to the extent i felt was needed. btw im not seeing an MD its a psycdoc that prescribed me the adderall and ritalin so im not sure if my MD can prescribe me controlled stubstances but i wil look into it further. thanks for the advice and please keep posting more!
update on provigil - starting to casuse way to many side effects, muscle's hurting (arms left arm mostly), very immotional (the most stupidest things have me almost crying like when i was listening to a song it says we miss you please come home... love mom, or something, i was like aww and got a wierd sad feeling doesnt last long at all but its a brief and sudden attack of sadness
