I'm a 28 year old male who was recently diagnosed with ADHD (most likely innattentive type) last month. I was referred to an MD by the psychologist (who herself was part of my PPO). The MD and psychologist are affiliated somehow (and both in the PPO).

My first visit was 15 minutes tops. I was given Concerta 36 mg. I was given very little time to discuss my options (in fact no opportuntiy to discuss options). Very little time to ask questions; I was just wisked out the door.

It worked well the first week (with some jitterynessd) but lost most of its effectiveness the second and 3rd week. I went back today, and the doctor had me in and out in about 5 minutes, asked cursory questions and upped the dosage to 54mg. Again no opportunity to ask questions. Also, both the doctor and I will be on vacation in 30 days, and his suggestion was to simply skip days to get the 30 day suppply to stretch out. I told him this was unnacceptable and made them give me an appointment before my vacaction with one of his colleagues in his practice so that I didn't run out of meds.

The psychologist (non-MD) seems to only have appointments available every two weeks (one of which she cancelled because she was sick). So I haven't seen her in 4 weeks. I am feeling like I'm getting no attention from the doctor, therapist or anyone for this problem. I guess I'll have to sign up and pay for better medical insurance next chance I get in January. You get what you pay for.

The irony is that the insurance company makes all its providers give an information sheet to patients which tells the patients their rights. One of these supposed rights is the right to know all my treatment options and to make an informed choice about them.

What SHOULD I expect, timewise from doctors and therapists for the treatment of ADHD in the early stages?

Thanks everyone!!

Alex

not exactly sure what you should expect but you should most definetally not be treated like that either say no and stay in room untill options discussed or switch doctors you have more than one option when it comes to doctors oyu shouldnt have to put up with a rude doctor no matter what your insurance is
