it says that Concerta causes loss of appetite in only 4% of patients. Yet down a little further under disadvantages it implies that virtually all patients will not feel hungry until the entire dose wears off (after 12 hours).
Does anyone know...is Concerta unlikely or likely to cause loss of appetite while in the system?
I think it depends on the person, but many people on this board (myself included) have found it indeed causes loss of appetite.
There's also a small minority (like me) whom it makes a bit more hungry. Go figure.
zoneout 07-20-06, 03:10 AM I'm not noticing much difference. Maybe a slightly reduced appetite if anything.
scbuk71 07-21-06, 04:20 PM My son was on concerta for year and a half. His appetite went way down. He was always fussy eater but he just wasn't hungry. The times he was off meds he ate like there was no tomorrow. A suggestion if anyone is worried about weight loss in their child and lack of needed vitamins. Our doc told us to let him drink a slimfast with a snack. It has nutrients they need, plus gives them a little boost on the calories(banana, strawberry, &choc.fudge were big hits!):)
In 6 months he lost 7 lbs which we were told was quite good. If you saw how much the appetite dropped and how active he was you would be surprised that thats all he lost!!!
cyclops 08-15-06, 06:27 PM it didn't really affect my appetite.. well, maybe it did. i had just gotten off coke when i got prescribed concerta, and when you go through coke withdrawal you eat SOOOOO much, because your non existant appetite comes out of hibernation..
so maybe it has relatively decreased my appetite since i'm not over eating, but i definitely don't have a lack of appetite.
My daughter is just as picky on of off concerta. She lost a little weight on concerta and has gained it back while taking a break, even though I see no difference in her intake.
Crazy~Feet 08-15-06, 08:08 PM I have issues with appetite on or off Concerta, as far as I can see it does not affect my appetite. I do remember to eat and make meals more often on Concerta though :o.
Crazy
blichter 09-05-06, 01:50 PM On 72mg of Concerta I have found that I usually go without eating anything until about 3:00 pm before I remember to eat.
My 6 years old son was put on Concerta 18mg. He was taking before that Ritalin. I had to stopped the medication because he lost a lot of weight. I am clueless to what to do because for one side, I am extremely concerned about his weight (he is eating pretty well since I stopped the meds) but by the other side he is uncontrollable. *sigh*
steven d 09-16-06, 06:10 PM I eat alot. I take concerta in the morning and I eat an entire hot meal in the morning. In the midday I eat entire dish too.

I'm the same way!
I weighed 195lbs when i started taking 54mg a day. The first month or two i don't think i dropped any weight. Then my life went to hell and i went down to 145lbs! I'm not sure if it was all the stress that did it or a combination of stress and the concerta. I have since put back on 12lbs and have maintained that weight for about three months now.
Honda Shadow 10-16-06, 10:55 PM I'm an emotional eater. When upset I stuff to find comfort then want to be sick. I just couldn't bring myself to throw up, so that ruled out bulemia for me. However, on the concerta, I don't have that compulsion to stuff when my life gets out of control. I'm really more thirsty than anything. A little food goes along way. I do try to eat something that is good for me and I feel better. I can difinitely handle stress so much better.
I have just gone through a terrible death of my mother this past week as well as seeing my oldest sister whom I hadn't seen in 20 years which was due to a misunderstand. My sister's reunion was great, the death of my mother was a terrible experience. Infact, when all this stress was going on, I was only 3 days into my new med concerta 27 mg twice daily along with Wellbutrin 100 mg twice daily. I was taking my meds as prescribed and completely forgot to monitor my results. I felt so good if you can believe seeing your mother starve to death as feeling good, maybe I should say I was handling the situation very very calmly. I know for a fact if it hadn't been for this med, I would never have made it through this ordeal last week. My hats are off to Concerta. I only hope it will last.
lyenome 10-18-06, 09:42 PM I've been on concerta for about 6 weeks and it has absolutely killed my appetite. I have lost around six or seven pounds, I probably would have lost more but I have made a concerted effort to keep weight on. I don't feel like I have a whole lot of wieght to lose. I started at 36mg and have titrated up to 90mg, which is where I will stay, unless side-effects force my to titrate down.
In order to get nutrients, I drink the boost plus nutritional drinks. One bottle has about 360 calories, and it is good for when I don't feel like eating real food. After the dose wears off, I usually get my appetite back and have a good sized dinner.
AdamBomb 10-19-06, 04:51 PM I also have lost about 15lbs. I think for me its a mix of an up'd metabolism, and a lack of appetite. Which if you knew my appetite, you would might think thats not a bad thing.:) When I nocticed the weight loss, I decided I would make an effort to eat better all together. I was about 50lbs over weight, so I am hoping to become a bit more health because of it all. Time will tell.
lyenome 10-20-06, 02:39 AM I just weighed myself and it turns out that I have lost even more weight than I thought, about ten pounds-ahhhh! I can tell my clothes are fitting a lot looser, but I hope that the weight loss isn't noticeable. I haven't gotten any comments from friends or family, so that is a good thing. I hope I am not losing muscle...
I used to eat pretty healthy before starting conerta, now I don't seem to care what I eat. I just try to eat high calorie foods, which usually aren't very healthy, i.e. french fries, hamburgers, cheesesteaks. My poor arteries. I think I need to start concentrating on healthier foods. Since I am eating so much less, I really need to make sure that what I am eating is healthy.
