So someone is talking to me and starts talking perhaps in a fast way or maybe with a slight accent. I'm like "What?", it sounded all garbled, but the person standing right next to me understands every word he says. And this is not just one sentance, it's almost everything he says. Then I try to replay his talking in my brain as slowly as possible and try to make out the words he was saying and sometimes I can understand then what he was trying to say to me. I've been thinking that it might be because of "Brain Noise", it's like a bunch of thoughts going on in my head at once, but I'm not able to just tune into 1. I'm a compulsive thinker, I will ask myself questions, double-take everything. When I'm walking on the sidewalk I am not thinking about what's in front of me, I am in my own daydream state thinking about a whole bunch of things. Does this sound like it might be ADHD?

Hello jayjay, and welcome :).

I can only offer you my own experiences here, and must admit that does sound a lot like me. I am positively loaded with ADD myself ;).

Garbled auditory input: occurs for me sometimes, especially when I fail to time my medication properly and enter a rebound condition. This happened to me just last night, actually. My 17 year old said to me:

"A writer knows all" (don't ask LOL) and what I heard was "I bought her Nose-All" :eyebrow:...fortunately, I know why that happened and so did she and we had a few minutes of hilarity pondering what type of product Nose-All might be :D.

Brain Noise: I call this the Remote Control Gremlin. My brain/thoughts=TV set and he keeps switching my channels. If I ever catch that guy I am gonna wring his neck for him .

Daydream States: not so much as an adult, as a kid yes, and my kids, definitely.

Luck to you!

this happens to me quite often. Alot of the times when im minding my own business someone will direct speech at me and ill have to ask them to repeat it one, two, three times.

Medications, auditory processing problems, or hearing loss can also cause this. I can't understand normal conversation in a moderately noisy environment. For me it is due to hearing problems.

If you have not had your hearing checked , maybe it is time to get to an audiologist. If you also have sensory problems, particularly with sensitivity to sound, it could also indicate that there are problems with hearing. In either case if you have not had your hearing evaluated, you ought to have it done.

Some medications can make you a little deaf. Asprin can, and stimulants can also. The flavor enhancer MSG will also have this effect.

This happens to me alot, its worse when it is in a fast wayor a slight accent but it also happens whenever anyone talks... it sounds garbled to me as well, sometimes I have to get them to repeat themselves several times, even though ive had my hearing tested a number of times and it has come out fine.

I think that for me it is to do with my adhd as i can not concentrate on anything unless im really interested in it but with some people it is just a matter of listening to the person who is speaking, you may need to get your hearing tested, because if it is symptoms of AD/HD it would be frequent and will have been with you all your life, have you any other symtoms relatedto ADHD?

If sounds are sometimes distorted... like the sound of a radio with a bad speaker... it could be an auditory processing disorder. Severe tinnitus can also have similar effects.

If thos e kind of effects are happening a lot, you should explain it to your doctor.

I do this aswell, i kinda zone out, if the convesation is boring or it's all garbled, it's like my brain looks for stimulation else where automatically, i find it very wierd like it's a battle to keep intrested! just my expierence :)

I think that getting dsitracted under a big sensory load is common with ADDers. I think that "zoning out" is just another way that ADDers "switch channels".

Yes, zoning out is a good way of describing it, sometimes in the middle of someones speech my brain will catch on to a new thought, like "Oh, did I forget to do the laundry?" And while I'm asking myself this question the remainder of the persons speech is GONE, like I never heard it or it was really garbled. My hearing is fine I think, it has something to do with the way I am processing it. I believe I have inattentive ADHD, but at times I will be fidgety too. I have a real hard time reading books because I will totally skim through them because I am so impatient. In general, my memory is really bad too because I just have so many thoughts going on at once, or I actually really wasn't giving my full UNDIVIDED attention.

Jayjay the inability to zoneout was the only way I could get the kid to realise her meds were working :D although it was clear to me they were, and I had to make her try and fail to get to see that!

Unmedicated Me: C'mon, if you don't think the meds work. That wall over there is totally zone friendly, so zone with me, if you can.
Medicated Kid: OK let's zone!
(proceeds to stare at wall and zoneout)
(proceeds to stare at wall)
Mom...MOM! That wall really is zone friendly what's happening?
Huh? Oh sorry, went to the Bahamas in my mind...what were you saying?
:eyebrow: Ooookay Mom, whatever! I cannot zoneout, and I tried to, what's going on here?
Means the meds work honey, sure hope Concerta works for me toooooooo....(space on wall compels me back again)
Sheesh Mom, I hope I don't look as dumb as you do when I zone!
Huh?
Never MIND!

And Boone, I feel for you, and hope you never cross paths with me and the Kid unmedicated and hyperspeaking at the speed of light...we would probably melt your synapses and never mean to do it.

Its weird how I can also speak at the speed of light, but listening to someone speak alot is almost impossible for me. :D

If we ever did cross paths, we would both be talking away at eachother and I wouldnt even listen to a word you say and the conversation would be a complete mess!

Not everybody can do that...the Kid and I understand each other when we do that, maybe we could understand you, and you could also understand us?

I know what the Kid would say to that idea, she would say "Lets ruuuuun!"...bet everybody else would wonder when we all managed to learn Chinese though ;).
