View Full Version : wellbutrin to depakote ...advice
bumblebe 07-21-06, 01:50 PM Just got approved for accchess (gov health aid) so I had to go with one of their drs ..she decided to take me off adderall and put me on wellbutrin...........I had problems at work and was told not to come in one day untill a meeting with the boss could be schedeuled, I went straight to the Drs office to get a note of something to take back with me, I saw a different Dr this time who thought taking me off adderall was not a good idea nor was putting me on wellbutrin, she told me to stop taking it and to start taking depakote. Does anyone else take an antidepressant along with adderall that really seems to work? Ive tried abilify and experienced my first anxiety attack, never want to feel that way again. who knows the diff between wellbutrin and depakote? I liked wellbutrin because it really curbed my appetite.
Attainathon 07-21-06, 02:17 PM Like I said in a previous post, i was curious too as to why the Adderall was not going to be continued... Also, how long have you been taking the Wellbutrin? It can often take some time to get the full benefit..
Now, I am not a doctor nor do I claim to really know that much about any of these drugs, but Depakote seems like a very odd addition unless they are changing your diagnosis.. Depakote in my opinion is a heavy duty med, and not generally an ADD med.. If your doctor actually started you on Depakote, were you advised to have bloodwork done? Depakote needs to be monitored pretty closely...
Maybe someone who is more knowlegable about this has some insight, like I said I could be way off base but confident enough to think at the very least you should check into this further...
Keep us posted, and more importantly keep your chin up! :)
bumblebe 07-21-06, 02:35 PM Thats the funny thing I was only on wellbutrin for about a week when i had trouble at work(due to not having adderall not the wellbutrin) when a different Dr. didnt like the wellbutrin, I kinda liked the lack of appetite i she said it would make me more addgitated and tence. I have had a complete line of blood work done all perfectly with in the norm, I think she did the depekote because I told her that once many years ago I was misdiagnosed bipolar and was put on depekote and from what i could remember of it i felt better. But it was a long time ago and ive been on so many diff meds i couldnt tell you one from the other going by how i feel alone, except for abilify, that med really freaked me out, I had never experienced a anxiety attack before taking abilify, i dont ever want to feel that way again, i went to the emergency room I thought i was crazy.....
Ive been on so many diff meds AHHH! The one med i want my dr wont perscribe to me which is ambien. Id love to sleep a whole night through, i have no probs fallind asleep but staying asleep.....not a chance.
Attainathon 07-21-06, 02:51 PM Is this your psychiatrist or your general practioner that has been prescribing for you?
Why is she unwilling to prescribe Ambien, or maybe Sonata (I like Sonata better, seems to clear out of my system faster and no morning "fog")..
bumblebe 07-21-06, 03:39 PM says ambien is habit forming
took me of adderall because my insurance wouldnt cover it
The Dr I saw after that refured me to value options which does cover adderall, She wrote me a prescription to hold me over untill my insurance kicks in.
Is sonata habit forming? I think I might have had that before, knocked me out right away and like you said no fog the next day.
VisualImagery 07-21-06, 04:25 PM Before you take another drug or change a dosage, get online and check out possible drug interactions!!!!!! Here are several sites:

You have to register here but it is free! The report is very thorough.

As a medical consumer, you need to educate yourself and tactfully, gently, give the info to your doc. This is especially true if you see 2 or more docs. You could save you life someday.
Use a monthly calendar to keep a record of you symptoms and any changes in your ADD or general health, both positive and negative. This can help you and your doc get an objective picture of what is happening.
If you are not seeing a psychiatrist you really need to consider doing so. Family docs, internists, and GP's are very good at what they do but they are not trained to treat ADD the way psychiatrists are. I was being undermedicated for ADD. It had a big impact on my work performance.
On last question-does your ADD get worse with your cycle-Do you have PMS? This can make things worse-there are treatments-see a gyn for this or go to free women's health clinic for help.
I am on my own journey to finding the best treatment for my ADD, Fibro, and other health problems. We have shoulders to lean on. You are under a lot of stress right now-take care of you. Watch a favorite movie, get some sleep, or do something you really love. It will get you through the weekend.
Take care.

Attainathon 07-21-06, 04:55 PM Again, just to help clarify and give you a better response, is this a psychiatrist or a gp doing the prescribing for you?
What is your official diagnosis? Were you given an explanation as to why the Adderall is not covered?
Attainathon 07-21-06, 04:59 PM So, you are currently taking Adderall and Depakote?

gp is what im seeing now, The reason the adderall wasnt covered through my gp care is because its a government funded health aid, so to get certain help you need to be refured to a specialist by your appointed gp, which has been done thankfully I have an appointment this week.
Ive gone from effexor to abilify to lexapro to wellbutrin and now on depakote all within a 6 month span.
The responce i got earlier about edecuating myself on meds is the best advice one could give, I wasnt on the wellbutrin for long maybe 9 days when another gp (the dr that was available that day) told me to stop wellbutrin and put me on depikote.
I am scared, in a way I want to put a holt on all meds (with the exception of the adderall) untill i have enough info on what all these drugs do.
In the mornings Im really happy, I work out and feel great about what i am capible of doing with my life, Once I get home from the gym and start getting ready for work I get really depressed, self talk helps, or i ignore it, keep myself busy. Its off and on like that all day, All most like how you can feel a sneeze comming on, I can feel a low comming on, then it passes and im ok. the worst is when you feel like you have to sneeze ...but it never comes out and your like ,i know ima sneeze, I dont know if this is making any sence but its the best way i can explain what i feel.
I know I cant be happy all the time no one is right? thats normal, what I cant take is the "sneeze" comming on, its like all of a sudden I just found out that someone so dear to me, some one who I love with all my heart and soul has just died. I feel that emptyness and greif. I have to think about it for a min, go over all the people I know, they are all still here, I think about what it is that I am so sad about, what happened? I dont know. so I just move on, self talk.
thank you for reading, and for responding. the advise and web links will help me allot through my understanding the meds.
I've been prescribed Dep-ER, for its anticonvulsant properties.
It's usually prescribed for Bipolar-Disorder, also.
I've never heard of it prescribed solely for curbing depression.
And it definitely does not curb a 'healthy' appetite.
