anyway, bored...
oh yea i remembered what i was gonna say,
OK how many mg's are in a... 5mg spansule dexedrine pill?
and how many mg's are in a 5mg tablet pill?

My main reason for asking this is because if you take 5 mg tablets through out the day 3 times (wake up, lunch, and 4 pm for example) you are accually taking a total of 15 mg's dexedrine a day,
if you take a 5 mg spansule when you wake up are you taking only 5mg's dexedrine a day or is it the equevelance of taking 5 mg tablets through out the day (15 mg's?) let me try to be more indepth for you sever ADDers who most likely will not understand (as i just read it and it sounds confusing to me...)

Is taking three, 5 mg IR tablets through out the day the same as taking 1, 5 mg spansule in the morning

OR

Is taking three, 5 mg IR tablets through out the day the same as taking 1, 15mg spansule in the morning

The mg are the same in IR and spansules (extended release); The difference is in how they are released.

Yes, 3 IR tablets of 5 mg each are the same mg as a 15 mg spansule.

Please keep in mind that having severe ADHD does not mean that one's mental capacity is diminished. As someone with severe ADHD, I find this fallacy quite frustrating.

A 5mg dexedrine spansule is equivalent to a 5mg IR tablet in the amount of dextroamphetamine sulfate. The significant difference between the two is how the medicine is released.

I am on the immediate release and am thinking of trying the spansules - what are people's reactions to it? When I was on methylphenidate based medications, I found the extended release versions such as concerta never lasted long enough and packed a lot less punch over the whole day than the same number of milligrams of IR tabs spread out over the same period. I am pretty sure some of the drug was getting lost in my system without ever absorbing.

There is the same amount of drug in a 15 mg spansule and 3 mg. tablets, obviously, but the more important question is whether your body absorbs the same amount. In the case of concerta my body for whatever reason did not absorb all of it as it passed through. The same may or may not be true of dex spansules (I did not find it to be true of adderal XR when i was on that). Obviously these things vary from person to person.

Whether your body absorbs the same amount is going to depend on the acidity of your stomach throughout the day. A 15mg spansule and 3 five mg tablets will all release 15mg dextroamphetamine sulfate.

a 15 mg spansule releases a 7.5 mg dose once the cap opens and the rest of the dosage is released "in vivo" i guess it slowly releases. I notice a difference in the tabs though as far as when it kicks in and the effect on symptoms... i.e. the tab at the time that it begins to work is due to when it is metabolized and where versus the outer part of the capsule takes time to dissolve and therefore starts at a different time and gives a different effect... i have opened the spansule (with my docs okay) and took it that way and it can be like 3 different drugs if tried alone (i am on a whammy dose)
