View Full Version : Rare side effect of Stimulants
texassweetpea 07-22-06, 01:30 PM A few days ago I started getting a sore throat. I never get sick so it was unexpected. My tongue was swollen and raw and i had alot of mouth pain. On a hunch I did a lil research via google and found that severe sore throat, even strep, can occur with use of stimulants (amphetamines). I am feeling a lil better today but its still hard to eat anything and swallow. My throat was VERY red and ulcerated and I have sores in my mouth. Has anyone else ever heard/senn about this?

I am feeling a lil better today but its still hard to eat anything and swallow. My throat was VERY red and ulcerated and I have sores in my mouth. Has anyone else ever heard/senn about this?I'm very sorry to hear about your recent experience with the medication. Sounds like you may have had an allergic reaction to the drug. I have never heard of anyone having that reaction before. I sure hope that you notify your Dr. about that reaction.
I would love to know where you read that information that you found after doing a Google search on this subject. I was unable to find anything, and I would love to learn more about what you read, and exactly what that source might have meant when they said that strep can occur with the use of stimulants (amphetamines). As you probably know, "strep" is short for "streptococcus bacteria," and stimulants (amphetamines) do not cause bacterial infections. However, if people abuse stimulants (amphetamines) these drugs do lower the immunity of the addict thereby making the person much more susceptible to various bacteria (and other pathogens) in the environment. I wonder if that is what was meant at the site you went to? I would really like to find the link where you found your information.
Pleas take care of those symtoms, and be sure to tell your Dr. about this extreme reaction you had ASAP.
texassweetpea 07-22-06, 10:38 PM Here is one of my sources...its listed under uncommon side effects

Hyperion 07-22-06, 10:50 PM Errrm, in your first post, you mentioned amphetamines, and then you give a link to information about methylphenidate. Different chemicals, different pharmacodynamics, very different pharmacokinetics, although they do produce similar results in a particular region of the brain that is very helpful.
Sore throat is listed under "Incidence unknown," meaning that these are things that have been reported anecdotally to have occurred but whose prevalence (or even correlation) is unknown. It is listed along with many other side effects that are very unlikely. Furthermore, I see no mention of streptococci there. As was stated earlier, that's a bacterial infection, and therefore that's caused by, well, bacteria.
Sore throats are actually also quite common with mild viral infections such as a cold or flu, or with mononucleosis. ADHD meds, if taken as directed, are unlikely to cause this, but again as stated before, if one were abusing stimulants and living in a "junkie lifestyle," one might easily find oneself with a compromised immune system, and thus be more prone to such infections.
Get some rest, drink plenty of fluids, and see your doctor on Monday. If you take any over the counter cold remedies, avoid anything containing pseudoephedrine or phenyleprine, as they may interact badly with ADHD meds. If you're not sure if a particular OTC preparation will interact with ADHD meds, feel free to ask the pharmacist, they'll know. If you continue to get worse, or if you have any difficulty breathing, then you should seek medical help immediately.
texassweetpea 07-23-06, 05:08 AM I know that strep is bacterial. I guess i should have phrased it...more as it contributes to it. I am having trouble finding the original article that i read about amphetamines. I found a site listing it as a side effect for adderall.
http://www.adderal.com/library/side.htm?anxiety,dexadrine,speed,sideeffects
My computer is hijacked i think cos every time i search for the article i end up at some crazy website.

I know what you mean. I had that problem for the past couple of weeks. Yesterday I had to do a complete system retore on my computer due to a Trojan Worm that I got infected with while surfing the internet that eventually caused my system to stop operating. Since doing the system restore my computer runs like new now. Unfortunately I lost everything that had added to my computer since it was new by doing a complete system restore, but considering how much better it's running now, it was worth it. In fact, on Friday night my system came to a complete hault as a result, so I really had little choice.
texassweetpea 07-23-06, 12:55 PM I have a very good security system and ran a few scans for spyware and trojans. It came up clean. I don't know what the deal is I used 6 different search engines yesterday looking for my original source of info which in an ADD moment i didnt save. All me search results were random, the titles didnt match the description. Most didnt lead anywhere but errors or questionable sites or internet pharmacy sites.
My throat and mouth are getting better. Still quite sore. I will call my internist tomorrow and tell him. It's funny I really think this reaction was to the adderall. I just recently (a month ago) discontinued 2 yrs of biweekly risperdal shots. Gradually since I quit them, I have noticed my tolerance for the adderall is getting a lot lower..I seem more sensitive to it.
Anyway thanks for keeping me on my toes!
If you will go to you system restore and set a point to restore to after you get the system back how you want it, you can restore to that date and have everything loaded how you want it for the next time.

Thanks X-Man, I appreciate the tip.
I taught a computer class for three years. I didn't know much about computers before that, but I learned alot during that time.
One important thing is to go to Microsoft's update site and download the service packs and security updates for your operating system. It will fix all of the things they didn't have figured out before they marketed the operating system. It also is like antivirus. The security packs have the patches to get rid of the trojans and other enemies to you computer. The first thing I do when i feel a glitch on my system is to go quickly to the security pack downloads and update my antivirus then restart the computer. If you do this before the virus can shut you down, it can counteract the problem sometimes.

VisualImagery 07-23-06, 02:28 PM Wow, I didn't know computer problems were a side effect of Adderall! What virus scan do you use? Or is it bacterial? :D
