Well I just got off from work 3 hours early. This sub shop experience is my first "grunt work" job... I've only ever done therapy and respite care for disabled individuals (mainly those with autism). I had held off having a job like this in the past because I knew I couldn't handle it with my social anxiety problems (now under control) and ADD.
My performance was pretty poor, I kept screwing up orders because I was having an unusually (even for me) hard time concentrating. My boss finally yelled at me and my co-workers (usually, I'm the one to get stuff done) for one of us to go home for the day, I just left. I don't dislike working there its just a pain on these off days where i absolutely cannot concentrate on what I'm doing.

This is a big change for you! Food service can really S*&^! How long have you been there? Believe it or not, you will get all that stuff down very soon-and probably be one of the best employees. There is so much to learn in the beginning. My exp= Cracker Barrel and Denny's,waiting tables, a taco place-asst manager, and a corporate cafeteria as bookkeeper.
Ask to switch duties if possible and stock shelves or something when you feel like this. It is the intensity. Don't tell them you have ADD, just say you need a boring job for a bit-someone will be glad to switch!!
Does it get worse when you get slammed?
Think of your boss like he is a client. He needs understanding, try out your therapy skills-be very nice and understanding-will throw him off guard. But do it like a Fox and keep you wits about you.
Finally, KEEP LOOKING FOR THE JOB YOU REALLY WANT!!!

TheMind,
Don't give up!
I have an ADD friend in graduate school who started washing dishes at a restaurant. She was so efficient that they wanted to make her a waitress - something she did not want to do! She wants to wash dishes. I advised her to brake a few dishes and make a few mistakes once in a while so that she would not be "threatened" with a promotion to waitress.
I also told her not to bring her high level philosophy and science reading for breaks at work; it was intimidating the other kitchen workers and confusing her manager. She has started reading the Enquirer during breaks...and loves her job.

I should have done that around my principal. :p :p

Bah, they caught me stimming twice today... once over a dime (it was so scratched/corroded/w/e that i couldn't tell if it was a slug or not)... and then... I had to stay later than normal so I was getting bored, and I got caught reading the newspaper :( Its mainly a problem when I'm in between tasks, you know, I take a bit longer getting on to the next bits.
The food service/sub shop isn't a big deal, making subs is pretty consistently the same every time versus what I'd be doing in other food service jobs. "You eating here? What bread do you want? What do you want on it?" Every person that comes in its the same and as long as it stays the same I'm fine.
I'd love to be doing my habaide/respite care job. I make more money (compare the $5.50 an hour at quizno's to $8.00 or so for them), I enjoy it more, and I'd get college credit for it. Problem is, I doubt that I can get the hours I'd need to make the money I need... and consistently/reliably enough. Plus I don't know that I could make all those hours fit in well with my school work. I think that I can get away with only working 2 nights a week in the sub shop once classes start. Don't know that I could say the same for the gig at the child development center if I had to put respite hours in. Plus its alot harder to get to someone's house to "babysit" on the other end of town (i don't have a car) versus being able to take the 10 minute walk to quiznos.

:) its going alright... friday I spilt 5 gallons of ice water on the floor from a water bottle sale display that I was supposed to be emptying. Got to spend an hour mopping it up.
I really don't dislike working there, I was having alot of fun last night making sandwiches, and my coworkers are great. Its just that my boss is a senile old hag whose obsession with money realy rides on everyone who works there. I'm not the only one who makes mistakes and gets yelled at, but still there's that feeling of "I should be able to control this". Should get alot better once I get back on my strattera too.
