SEX RELATED

im lost :(

while i have never been a sex driven person i always wished i was. when i started going out with my current girlfriend and began having sex with her i noticed that she wanted it more then i did. now she being a vergin when we meet i can understand but it has been months... during out relationship which is a GREAT one i have found myself thinking WHY do i NOT want sex... am i lazy? chemically imbalanced? this i delt with and am able to keep her happy.

the problem has gotten worse though since i have started taking adderol xr 20mg. i have noticed that i am WAY more open and talkative. inhabitions are lowered and i rathe renjoy the medication. i start feeling the adverse effects in bed though. my erections are not as strong and do not last as long as when i was not on the medication. compound that with a condom through which sensation is deminished( i have tried MANY condoms) and i feel like i cant get it up/keep it up... i stoped taking adderall xr for a month or so and the problem went away..

i would like to know if this side effect will decrease in the future because the medication helps me in college and at work a lot.

are there any over the counter meds i can take that would combat the lowered sex drive.. are any of those adds in the back of magazines real?

please point me in some direction.

pardon my spelling and grammer its 3:53 am

One suggestion I would make is for your girlfriend to consider going on the pill (or some other birth control other than condoms). That would relieve the condom issue and help matters somewhat. Of course I would only suggest that if you two are exclusive and are free of any STD's.

we both are and she was on the pill until this week. shes going off because its not acting correctly with the welbutrin she is taking.

Switch to regular Adderall. It only lasts 4-6 hours.

Just don't take an evening dose. Adderall kills my food appetite and it comes back strong in the evening if I skip my evening dose.

Could you not use it on the week-ends and just commence your sexual activities then? It might work.

Huh? Are you not able to take your medicine during work/class?

3-4 doses should cover that time period just fine.

I just wanted to bring this post back up again to be noticed because out of all of the posts, no one really answered Romeo's questions. I don't have an answer as I am not on Adderall but would be interested in some other opinions/points of view to his questions. Thanks

Let's see... full-time job, college, AD/HD, meds, girlfriend....sounds to me like this all = STRESS -- and I can't think of anyone (superhuman or not) who could "stand up" thru this.
Sounds to me you're being a tad rough on yerself.
I don't think a pill's the real answer.

You know, I am having the same problem, I just switched to XR and my girlfriend has not been happy, It seems sometimes I have sex just to make her happy and I cant even do that. I am semi-erect at best. SOmetimes I forget to take the XR and when my gf and I are intimate, she can call me on whether or not I forgot the XR on that particular day

"are there any over the counter meds i can take that would combat the lowered sex drive.. are any of those adds in the back of magazines real? "

In a word - No. The ads in the magazines are spurious, Fake, placebos whatever you want to call it. Nothing "over the counter" is going to improve sex drive. Testosterone is sometimes prescribed for this, but it is usually for older men - I doubt you have a testosterone problem. Viagra can help with the physical side of things but I think the real solution here is to change your meds or the way you take them. Amphetamines are not good for your erection - you need to make sure you are not "high" on them when you want to have sex. It could also be a bit of stage fright - worrying that you won't get it up can prevent you from getting it up - a self fullfilling prophecy.
Try not taking Adderal the day you want to have sex ands see what happens.

I'm taking Dexedrine but was having the same trouble. I am not sure why but after four months or so the side effects went away for the most part. I went from having no trouble getting hard to not having an erection at all.

But something changed and now it's not an issue. I expect my sexual function might have come because I started to exercise twenty minutes a day. I'm not about to quit doing that to check though.. heh

The Dex seems to stay in my system quite a while too. I couldn't just take a day off and expect to recover my abilities to function sexually. I had to have a full two days without Dexedrine behind me to function almost normally on the third day. It sucked. I'm glad those side effects are diminished.

I've always had a high sex drive so it was a shock to the system to loose the potency.

One thing I discovered when I was at my least functioning was that marijuana certainly addressed the potency problems handily. I hadn't had any grass for a very long time previously, but decided to experiment and it worked wonderfully. It also worked for other elements too but I'll talk that out with a psychiatrist on the 18th. If he has anything to offer on the subject I'll share it on this board. Small doses were the order of the day.

I'm supposed to be doing a trial of Wellbutrin after I see the psychiatrist on the 18th. I see from the tv ads it's not supposed to have side effects that influence sexual function but I'm sure it has others.

Good luck with this you all... and me too.. ;^)
Cheers! Ian.

As a woman, I obviously haven't noticed "potency" or erectile difficulties while taking amphetamines (first Adderall, now Dex) for my ADD, but I definitely have noticed sexual difficulties. Not lack of desire, but delayed climax (sometimes very delayed) or inability to do so at all. And I am taking 150 mg. Wellbutrin XR. (Along with 50 mg. Zoloft, which could be adding to the problem; but I was on the anti-d's before the stimulants and didn't notice much of problem then.)

It is most frustrating. In some ways, I feel lucky I'm not in a relationship right now -- I'd be worried about bruising the fellow's ego and/or making him think he can't please me.

I think I will take a stimulant holiday of a couple of days just to see if I'm correct about what's causing it. Then, figure out what to do about it.

The best advice in this situation is this: see a doctor. Get a complete physical w/blood tests & etc. There could be other causes that you don’t know about. I don’t think it does any good for us to tell him that we have or have not had the same problems. He needs to get a check up.

As a follow-up to my post two posts back -- I found a page on Dr Bob's Mental Health Links (same Dr. Bob who runs the Psycho-babble site) about "Psychopharmacology Tips for SSRI sexual dysfunction." You can Google it.
It features posts from quite a few pdocs about what they've found works (and sorta works, and doesn't work) to combat SSRI-caused sexual dysfunction in men and women.

Now, obviously SSRIs are not the same as Adderall, but maybe one of the things that they say works with SSRIs would work for Adderall, too. I'd say definitely check with your doctor first, though. For instance, some of these also increase available dopamine, and so might make the problem worse and/or add up to much stimulant; or they may mix badly with Adderall.

FWIW...

My doctor said that Adderall should enhance your sexual experience, but I found that it also wasn't true for me, although I am female. I read, on another forum, that one man was really happy taking a supplement called Tribex. I've also read about Yohimbe and yohimbine, Maca, Damiana, etc.... You might have to alternate them and try to see how they work, they're all available at the health food store. I take Maca to regulate my cycles and avoid cramps.

Good luck.

Does the Maca do anything to counteract the sexual problems for you?

I can't even imagine not being able to get hard. At least when taking only SSRI antidepressants I am desensitized but not spongy.

The erectile problems you are having are most certainly a side effect of the medication, and you may need to take a special focus on solving them by excersizing and reducing your stress levels. If these do not work, and they may not, you might have to change to another medication or add something like viagra, cialis, levitra. It's depressing I'm sure, but you can imagine what you would be most comfortable with.

Don't think I'm trying to be insensitive to your issue, but I just wanted to ask for my own sake. I have noticed that my erections are only very slightly softer on meds, but my performance and the enjoyment are tenfold. I feel like I can focus much better on all the little nuances and the games of foreplay, and the physical sensation is simply stronger. I feel like I can control myself without getting so excited, and I can stay involved without getting bored and dreaming off. Previously I could only tolerate very fast, playful, kinky type sex, or very passionate romantic sex, but never the more ordinary sex that is so essential... if that makes sense :)

Anyone's sex drive improve on stimulants?

Anyone's sex drive improve on stimulants?

My sex drive increases on stimulants; but at the same time it's harder to have an orgasm.

Now, there's a charming combination of sexual side effects, huh?

Sure nips premature ejaculation in the butt. ;) OK, that was pretty bad, sorry . . .

Levoamphetamine, from what research I have done, is a more powerful vasoconstrictor than dextroamphetamine. I believe anyone having any problems with peripheral side effects should consider a switch to dextroamphetamine, away from Adderall.

I noticed Adderall made my flacid penis slightly smaller and tighter than normal. Dextroamphetamine for me has very little of this effect. Neither Adderall nor dextroamphetamine diminished my sex drive at an efficacious dose.

Not if you're female, like me. Then it just bites. Royally.

For me personally, adderalll will enduce super horniness if you take alot of time off it. For instance if you went two weeks adderall free and popped 20 mgs 30 mins prior to sexual activity, i garanty amazing sex! I can go for like two hours strait with amazing orgamsm(s) (yes plural). But if you use it everyday, it KILLS your sex drive !!!!

Hey, I actually found something that helps with my problem of not being able to have an orgasm while on Adderall. (Something besides stopping the Adderall, I mean. :-))

I read about it on some other psych threads about anorgasmia and meds, and it works for me. It's to take ginkgo biloba; 60 mg. twice a day.

(I buy the Duane Reade house brand, which is pretty cheap, and it comes in 60 mg. tablets.)

It took a couple of days to start working, but I've been having a lot less of a problem w/ the anorgasmia. (Yay!!!)

"Chadwick" , I'm not sure if it was due to reading your posting but re: adderal effecting the size of a flacid penis; I have also noticed a difference(and it wasn't due to being cold either:). It's not that big of a deal but find it to be such a strange s/e. It doesn't seem to effect size of erection though..how odd. I've not seen anyone else address this issue so I don't know if this is an uncommon S/E.
Did you switch to dexedrine for this reason, or was it due to its increased efficacy?

I have been on Adderall for about 5 months now and just recently have become the most inhibited, horniest chick on earth and my hubby is quite happy.:p I don't know whether its the Adderal or just hitting my sexual prime at 31 but I have NEVER felt like this before and the sex is absolutely fabulous. Sorry I just had to gush about my new found hobby:D after 15 years of having sex I am finally enjoying it:) Please, Please tell me this doesn't go away......

I've ready other posts attesting to heightened sexual enjoyment while on Adderal. I should clarify for those who may have misinterpreted my last posting... impotentency was never an issue. Like you taking Adderal has increased the frequency and intensity of sex. It was my taking lithobid which completely sapped me of a libido ...with a partner that is ;). I made the decision to stop taking the lithobid as it was threatning my relationship. The Adderal has definitely helped in that respect; but I give more credit to the discontinuation of lithobid for the increase in my sex drive.

Well, I've read through a lot of these thoughts ... but I have had a mysterious time with Adderall. 1) it has been absolutely stupendous in clearing up my concentration problems, but 2) it has the weird and maddeningly paradoxical effect of making me really really horny, but making my penis feel almost dead. I stopped taking it for several months (I'm also on Prozac + Wellbutrin)... but started taking it a week ago again due to a need to get important work done: now I'm hopinh hoping hoping that I can push through this LAST annoying side effect. BTW: Prozac never inhibited my ability to have sex: quite tghe opposite... so it's not the Prozac.

Any thoughts? I read in an earlier post about switching Dextroamphetamine instead of Adderall. Anyone know more about this?

Adderall has definitely increased my sex drive, and being a 23 year old male, that should not technically be possible. T/Th mornings with a theatre class where I was the only guy were, ummm, interesting, to say the least. It also had a side effect of making orgasm far more powerful, but no actual penile effects have been noticed, no changes in size or difficulty acheiving erection (knock on wood).

Oddly enough, though, when I was seeing a girl and having sex regularly, my sex drive went back down to something approaching normal. I was still quite turned on when she came over, but wasn't going insane with lust throughout the day as I was when I was single.

Probably the oddest effect was that I would continue to be turned on even after release, which is normal for women, but definitely not for men. The "afterglow" after sex was also more intense and longer-lasting, which makes sense from a pharmacological standpoint.

Keep in mind that Adderall increases levels of norepinephrine and dopamine, both of which, especially dopamine, are essential to the sex drive and the pleasure-reward system.
