View Full Version : Knlonopin for add
MarthaA562 07-25-06, 12:09 PM I posted this in the general add ta;lk. But during th e process of making sure I have add and not other conditions (my family has panic disorder, gad, adhd, add, bipolar... wow... how did I get so lucky?) my doctor has prescribed me klonipin first .25 2x a day, and know .5 3x a day since the other did not do a thing for me. He is hoping that if my hyperactivity and running all over the place is tranquilized, I will be more organized and will not lose things, and not drive people crazy with my excessive talking. The klonopin does not even make me tired. I still feel this pent up energy that needs to come out. The harder I try to organize my life (cleaning, work, not losing importatn things like keys for 6 DAYs!!). I may be about to lose my job and am driving my fiance cccrrrraaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzyyyyyyyyyy.... But whats new, I drive averyone crazy. DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH ADD AND TRANQUILZERS. DO THEY WORK FOR THEM???? TELL ME ALL!!!
butterflygirl 07-26-06, 02:53 AM Hi there. Yes. I also take klonopin. It has done wonders for me. I take anywhere from .75 mg-2 mg daily, depending on my stress level. Currently, my doc has prescribed 1.5 and he wants me to try to keep it level. It helps tremendously. Three doctors have said that they noticed a big difference with it. I take the .5 mg pills. I started out taking Ativan in Dec 05 and that helped me get really organized and less scattered. But, my new doc said klonopin was a superior medication for me.. so I had to withdraw from Ativan and slowly start klonopin. He was right. I feel more human and more like myself with Klonopin. On Ativan, I felt my emotions were covered up. Klonopin calms me when I'm upset, but I still feel feelings. On Ativan, I didn't. So, I think Ativan is scary that way and why most people get addicted to it.
Klonopin is less addictive. It is mellower and feels more natural. It also works better for calming, in my experience. I typically will take .5 mg Klonopin with 5 mg dex together.
Medications work differently for everyone.I was put on klonipin about a month ago for ADD and it made me feel like my heart was racing, always tired, and aggatated REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY bad.So if you are having problems i would talk to your doctor as like i said and as you probally know medications work different for everyone. What one person may love, the next may not and so on.Good luck!!!
SnappyCloud 07-26-06, 08:52 AM Martha,
Klonopin is usually prescribed 2X/day, but your doctor must have her reasons for the 3X/day prescription. As far as I can tell, and I take it, it helps you deal with anxiety/panic issues, but for an ADD person it is only an adjunct medication (to possibly stimulants). I'm not so sure Klonopin by itself is goung to improve the executivre function that is usually impaired in ADD.
MarthaA562 07-26-06, 06:24 PM So, if I am still having these ADD like symptoms, they are even worse with the klonopin... How much longer is is going to take him to realize that I don't just need to "slow down" and not be anxious to be organized... It is impossible!!!!! I have taken franklin covey organizing workshops, the more I try to organize, the worse it is. I need answers now... Grrrrr. Patience is not one of my strong points. I will admit, the knlonopin has helped with my anxiety, but I amstill impatient with driving, waiting in line, etc. etc......
Crazy~Feet 07-26-06, 06:31 PM Where at in SC? Too bad ya cannot get an appt. with my psydoc. He has ADD himself and has no patience for making others impatient with medication games :D.
Crazy (yep, I got benzos, they do nothing for my ADHD though)
MarthaA562 07-27-06, 05:21 PM Crazy feet,
I am in Charleston SC, my psych. He is well-renowned and has excellent continuing education stats and references. One of the best here. He does specialize in anxiety disorders though, which run in my family too. There is no add specialist on the Aetna insurance plan. :(
Crazy~Feet 07-27-06, 05:30 PM Argh, Martha, how far are you from Hartsville? Can you get a referral to see my psychiatrist through Carolina Pines?

I took Kolonipin for 5-6 years, but only at night when my anxiety levels would peak, to help me sleep, however, during the day I still took a stimulant for my ADD!

Springray 03-22-07, 10:31 PM Hi Martha, there's a really great doctor in Greenville SC,but it is a little far from Charlston. If you would like his info just let me know . Has anywone taken/ing Adderalxr with Klonopin ? Share experiences, please :)
QueensU_girl 03-23-07, 12:56 AM Klonopin can make "working memory" and learning new things, worse. ADHDers often have working memory impairments already.
Despite its slow onset, Klonopin also stays in the system 40-some Hours. Be cautious with things that require working memory and alertness, like driving.
(My bad car accident in 2000 was caused by taking Klonopin (as a sleeping pill), so I warn others about this drug. My Doctor or Pharmacist never warned me that it was super long-acting!)
D.B. Cooper 03-23-07, 01:00 AM GABAa works for everyone, its the one major inhibitor neurotransmitter in the human brain. I've been on every form of sedative thats marketed commercially except diazapam and sometimes in huge doses (5mg a day of xanax).
They seem like magical chemicals to alot of people at first but also bring alot of misery because of the level of dependence they cause. There are only two drugs capable of killing someone from withdrawal at high doses Alcohol and Sedatives (xanax, diazapam, ativan, klonopin).
I think they're useful for extreme conditions like panic disorder or agoraphobia but alot of people fail to understand that they're playing with one of the big neurotransmitters our brain relies on in a serious way when taking sedatives and that theres a price to be paid for doing that.
prurigro 03-23-07, 03:05 AM ever try meditation ? I'm with Cooper, avoid scary addictive drugs (sedatives) unless your life is going to hell without them-- it sounds like you should take it easy sometimes, but do you really wanna lose your spark that badly ?
QueensU_girl 03-23-07, 08:41 AM I agree with #19 (Cooper) and #20 (Prurigo).
Anti-anxiety drugs can cause REBOUND anxiety (which is way worse than the original anxiety).
Drugs just have way to many problems.
Often there are interpersonal stressors (social interactions that bring us 'down' or stress us), conditioning responses that get stuck (eg freezing, shutting down, inability to name things in the moment, lack of knowledge about boundary issues), or unconcious early life things (anxiety can be learned, even as babies, from a caregiver, based on viewing affective responses, etc) that have to do with Anxiety.
I've been in Group Therapy for it, and these are the things I learn from people seeking treatment for anxiety, again and again.
I refute the belief that Anxiety occurs for "no reason". (Anxiety just has no verbal words to explain what is happening, that's all at the moment, which is triggering a primed, or "kindled" Old [and justified] Reaction magnitude.)
yes - it "works", but you cant *think* or accomplish anything.
massagefever 04-01-07, 05:55 PM I take Klonopin three times a day to help with panic attacks and also to help keep my mind from racing. I find it especially helpful at bedtime when my mind tends to race so fast that even with ambien I can't fall asleep.
Now that said, it didn't seem like it did squat for me on the ADD/Bipolar front. I was still a major mess.
