Hi everyone, I've been on Adderall for a while now, and I'm making an appt with my doctor to talk about getting something for anxiety.
I've always had anxiety/depression issues, but i didn't want to take meds because I thought I could just fix it myself, since they are only emotions. Where as the ADD i think of as a mental thing. so theres my logic on that one.

Anyway, I was just wondering what experiences you all have had taking adderall (or another add med) and anti-anxiety meds? Any side effects?

Well if you're talking about getting benzos (valium, xanax, klonopin, ativan, etc) then uhm you may find that they reduce the effectiveness of your adderall. You see the way benzos work is they augment GABA and cause it to be more potent. One of GABAs main properties is controlling norepinephrine
and adderall is a norepinephrine promoting drug. So you're seeing the problem here?

I know this problem very well and it frustrates me to no end!!!! I take 6 mg Klon, 60 mg Adderall XR and 90 mg Cymbalta. I have the unholy troika of innatentive ADD, bad social anxiety, and atypical depression. The combo I am on now is best for the ADD, but not for the anxiety. If I take an MAOI like Nardil or Selegeline then I feel happy and free from this terrible anxiety... but it's impossible to get anyting done...

I don't know what to do and I feel so bad sometimes but what can I do? I hate this prison of anxiety that I live in... but I hate the ADD symptoms as well. If anyone has been able to solve this riddle I would be so grateful to hear how you did it.

Best wishes to all!

Its a crappy paradox but its best to treat the anxiety/depression first. I know during the height of my anxiety when i was taking about as much klonopin as you i would have went nuts on that much adderall. Although i think maybe cymbaltas serotonin action may really screw the effects of any stimulant up. When i took prozac after having discontinuation syndrome from effexor it made adderall next to useless for me.

The brain has this tendency to try and balance neurotransmitters so if you bring the serotonin up dopamine goes down and vice versa.

By selegline do you mean emsam or oral selegline? Because i hear the patch is very stimulating in comparison. Unfortunately, its insanely expensive right now.

I have ADHD and anxiety disorder. I take a combo of wellbutrin and tenex.
It works okay, but i have to manage my tenex carefully... If I take too much I turn into a slug, and if I don't take enough I go hyper. I have nerly zero side effects and feel pretty good on the combination.

I did take risperdal for a while, but It caused too much weight gain, so now I onl;y take it as needed. It was great for anxiety.

On ADHD. It's not just a mental thing. You can't fix it with an attitude change.
It is neurobiochemical... You are born with it, and it is simply a condition you either have or do not. Meds help more than about anything else, but there is no cure and no sure fire therapy for it.

I've not tried oral selegiline, only EMSAM, and yes, it is stimulating. When I was on it, it was stimulating for me but in a very strange way... I was turned from a shy/depressed/ADDinnatentive to a confident/not-so-depressed/totaly ADHD ultra-hyperactive guy. In the end, I decided to go back to the "half solution" I had before. Looking back, I may have had better cognitive results had I not been on the 6mg Klon per day during the EMSAM trial...

Of course taking stims with MAOIs is foolish... but I wonder if taking something more stimulating like IXEL with Adderall would be okay. I know that the seritonin component seems to cancel out 75-80% of the DA/NE benefit I get from Adderall now... Perhaps I'll give IXEL a try and see if I might get by on less Adderall and Klonopin.

It's worth a shot... (:eyebrow:  )

People who either dont value their life that much or know something i dont have been augmenting EMSAM with very low doses of ritalin. I have serious doubts if you'll find a shrink with the cajones to try that though.
