View Full Version : Should I tell My Boss I am Burned Out?
pittguy578 07-28-06, 09:28 AM Should I tell my boss I am burned out? I have been unhappy at my job for quite a long time. I didn't join the company to handle claims. I wanted to get into underwriting. However, I have not been able to ascertain a position in that area. I am seriously too smart for the job (graduated from college with a 3.81) IQ of over 135. I can't really fake like I care anymore. I have no desire to be here.
It is emotionally draining. I do the same thing over and over again. I am not challenged// I just want to quit and take some time off and find something I like.. I can move back in with one of my parents temporarily. I know that is lame, but I am one step from the booby hatch.
Possibly if I talk to my boss I may be able to get into another department..Anyone have any experience:( I am about to snap
Sorry to hear you are in such a slump. I agree, Claims Processing can be tough for someone with ADD because of it's repetitive nature. Have you tried putting your resume together and sending it out to recruiters who specialize in your industry? Or, have you tried sending it out to other companies in the same industry and letting them know that you are looking to advance to Underwriting?
There is nothing wrong with rethinking your career strategy if you approach it in the right way. Don't let your ADD tendencies bring you down, instead, get proactive and start thinking about how you would like to approach your next career move. If you want to make a career change, map it out and start a plan on what is the best approach to accomplish your goal.
If you would like to stay in your current industry, maybe there are some courses or training seminars available to help get you to the next level. Your company may pick up the tab, so it might be worth looking in to.
Whatever the case, it sounds like you need to make some kind of change and it is okay to feel this way. Maybe it is a good time for you to start thinking about what it is you would really like to do...like, what is your dream career? One thing we ADDers have on our side is, if we want something bad enough we will move mountains to make it happen. It sounds like you already have a college degree and your parents support, so it shouldn't be hard to refocus and go after what it is you really want and make it happen! :)
I hope you have found this helpful and let me know if you have any questions. I used to be a recruiter and have helped others in your situation make a career change and/or get to the next level.
jetamio 07-28-06, 06:22 PM Hi. I too have been struggling with a sort of burn out. My problem is that a new task doesn't hold my attention for very long once the challenge is gone. I do a lot of project management and that has been good for me because there is always something new to do. But, recently I found myself in a rut too and it makes me grouchy. I'm grouchy when I'm bored. I started finding myself new things to do which sort of helped for awhile. But now I want bigger and better things.
I've gone to my boss and proposed a few new ideas but they haven't gone far due to budget. My suggestion is don't go to your boss with your burnout. Go with ideas of new things to do, new responsibilites you want. Tell him you'd like to try some underwriting, at least part time to see how it goes. Maybe on a trial basis? The biggest thing though is don't go with a negative attitude.
I've come to the point where I put my resume out there (after six years!) and I've been pleasantly surprised as to the response I've gotten. I'm also going back to school in January. I know I want change so I'm taking baby steps to make them happen. Good luck to you!!
pittguy578 07-28-06, 06:32 PM I am working half a day tomorrow
My boss will be the only person there..
I am going to tell her I am not happy, and I don't know how much longer I can last.
This has been a long time coming. I had been hoping to move to another position more to my liking but nothing has come through. I was a finalist for two positions in underwriting, but no dice:( I was heartbroken and still havent been the same
I would be fine staying with the company if I could get a position that allowed me to be out of the office and meeting different people, etc...I just can't take the cubicle and not being challenged any longer.

I think this sounds like a very wise decision and well stated. :D
pittguy578 07-28-06, 07:07 PM I am taking the GMAT on Aug 11th:)

Have you thought about claims adjusting? That is a job within the insurance industry that gets you out of the office. I have a friend who is a claims adjuster and the company provides her with a car, computer and cell phone. She only has to report to the office once or twice a week...the rest of the time she is on the road or working from home.
lunaslobo 07-29-06, 08:26 AM I am taking the GMAT on Aug 11th:)
what is this? Is it a placement test or something like that? also how did it go with your boss? I wish you the best, I really know how you feel.
no7opinion 07-29-06, 08:40 PM This is what I would do. I would start interviewing 1-3 times a day, secure two other jobs and pay structures through verbal or written commitments, then go to your and say what you want to say.
Furthermore, there are more eloquent ways to express yourself. Instead of "burnt out". I would say that I like working here but I need to switch departments, jobs, etc. within the next week or I am going to have to way my options. I have outgrown my current position, yadda, yadda...
I think I could benefit the company better by doing X or being in X department, don't you agree?
Good Luck.
pittguy578 07-30-06, 11:29 PM I had to reinstall windows so I wasn't able to get back here as quickly as I wanted to!
I didn't have a chance to talk to my boss on Saturday. Something came up so another supervisor filled in for her.
I really don't know what to say or do. I am currently severely depressed with the thought of going to work tomorrow. I have had crying spells here and there over the last couple of months. I have also had to deal with my dad getting cancer and then having surgery and other stresses..
I probably should have left a long time ago, but I hated not having something in hand prior to leaving. I have been unhappy for quite sometime. The job has become less ADHD friendly since last year, everyone is expected to do everything a certain way, all notes have to look the same, pressure is up to have everything perfect.. I was hoping at one time to get fired so I could collect unemployment while looking for a job. I contacted a doctor, but the soonest I can get in for therapy is Aug 10th, the soonest I can get medication for anything is Sept 1st. I don't know if I will make it that long (at work). I really need to do something ASAP before I sincerely crack up
I am also mentally bored at my job. Honestly, I am too smart for the job. I honestly have figured out problems that my manager could not figure out. Even if she is sympathetic per se, I am not sure what she could do for me since their is a posting system, I need to post out for other jobs. They don't automatically promote or move people. She doesn't have the power to just switch me to another position.:( I don't know what to do.
pittguy578 07-31-06, 05:57 AM I am going to try to talk to her today. This is affecting everything, including my personal relationships and friendships. I am withdrawn, I don't get happy anymore about anything. I don't enjoy the things I used to enjoy. It really sucks:(
