What Would You Really Like to do When You Grow Up?

This is the thread of dreams.
It is from dreams that reality is born.

What would you really like to do with your life? For a career? Have you ever given voice to your dreams?

This is the place. Once your dream has a voice, you can begin to give it life. And who knows what you can do with a living dream.

So, forget about all the things that are in your way or holding you back. Such as ADD, education, etc. There are ways to achieve any dream. Give your dream a voice on this thread.

I have always known what I wanted to be when I grew up: a therapist. I expect I will make that goal one day. Stay tuned!

I have always wanted to fly helicopters. I guess that would be the closest to levitation possible.
To me it just screams freedom. No traffic, not restricted to somewhere with a runway, and you can just stop (hover) anywhere, even go backwards!
Anyhow at the moment it is just a dream. I tried to get into the army a few years ago, but they have a no medication policy, so I gave up on that. Their loss.
It's at least $40K, and 3 months to do the pilots licence training, plus living expenses for that time.
If I came upon $100K I could pay off my debts, do this training and live pretty well while doing it. Then follow the work for a few years while I get experience. This would probably mean either mustering in the outback or scenic flights :D

I want to get my own business going. I took some graphic arts classes and loved them. I set up a sole proprietorship and a website to do photo restoration. I think I would really enjoy doing this work because it is artsy....anyhow, now I'm scared to start marketing. Go figure.

I"d like to paint murals in hospitals and schools. I"d also love to try puppetry part time or as ahobby with a troup or somthing. I also want to illustrate my own short children's stories.

The following are far in the future dreams and some of them are "silly" But I'll list them even if they are silly:

I want to go to Ireland (and possibly live there. Artists get tax relief in Ireland) :D

I want to have a dog. The biggest, dumbest, but sweetest dog.

I want to live in a small comfortalbe home, that I interior design myself.

Despite how selfish I am now I do want children. Idealy, one boy and one girl.

I want a McDonald's style play place, complete with ball pit that is upsized for adults. (I don't know about you but I"d excercise a lot more if I could run around in a play place)

lol...there are more silly ones, but I can't think of them off hand right now.:D

I have had several dreams as I grew. but there have been two that have stayed with me even as we speak. That is to be a writer that makes a difference and an addictions counsler. Both are something that fills me each and every day of my life. the counsler i allowed people to talk me out of, for that it would not make me much money. not that I am making much right now. I guess that is a lesson we all must learn that in fufilling your dreams, dont ever look at money as the motivator behind what job you take. Look at what makes you happy, what you are good at. I do believe that each of us are chosen to do something. I dont know if i have found mine yet. Advice i heard a long time ago was "Get a job you really really love, and you will never work another day in your life."

Thanks Pembroke and Lobo!
I love the interjection of humor. My grandfather was also a farmer, and I do tell everybody he was outstanding in his field. I guess great minds think alike. Pembroke, I don't think I've grown up yet, I do think it would be boring.

I used to tell my students that I still don't know what want to be when I grow up. They kind of look at me like I just got off the flying saucer. They are so busy wanting to grow up and be adults and not be seen as kids that this one statement just throws them for a loop. In fact, one of my girls used to say, Ms. D, you get excited about everything. She said it like it was some kind of disease or her mental problem.

Some of my students come from really tough, tough home lives or personal problems and have never learned the joy of learning or discovering something new. That really makes me sad. Sometimes I think with ADD, as many difficulties as we do struggle with, many of us have never lost that joy of childhood discoveries and experiences.

Remember when you found bugs under a rock? Wen you discovered all the patterns you can make with finger-paint, even when you were not using the paper? I remember going to museums, and just getting lost in the history or the events, or the paintings and the sculptures displayed in what used to be those sacred halls.

It's funny though museums are now changing to allow people to discover within the galleries. At the St. Louis Art Museum, I went one day and they have brown was paper taped to the floor and dozens of children probably three or four or five years old, who had boxes of crayons and other art materials trawling what they saw in the paintings. Another day they had older children in ancient art gallery, re-creating Roman mosaics. Somehow, the adults to lead this haven't lost their childhood joy of discovery and learning.

Now since my digression in this thread, about our dreams when we grow up, I guess I should share mine. However, since this post is already long, I'll do it in a new post. But in case you hadn't figured it out, one of my dreams has done to be a museum educator and plan all those wonderful experiences for children, parents and adults so they can see museums as wonderful places to learn. And not as do feel places for a stuck up people to go. I have a lot of other dreams to for the next post.

So as Pem says, let's never really grow up, but let's follow our dreams. It just couldn't get any better than that.

Thanks for the humor and the provoking thoughts,

Becky, who wants to be a Toys "R" Us kid.

I think is the first time I have ever written all my dreams down in one place. I think it's an interesting how my early dreams never died, but changed and became more focused based on my life experiences. See the complete details in my Butterfly Papers journal.

To teach or otherwise work with high school students who fall through the cracks in the education system.

To pursue my art, expressing the literary imagery and folk tales, fairytales, and the short stories and other writings of Ray Bradbury. Through the book arts, weaving, textile design.

To build my dream house that I will design, decorate, with sweat equity

Develop a website that is multifaceted (and perhaps makes a little income for me too);

Career resources for adults with ADD.
Resources for regular education teachers to understand and work with students with invisible disabilities.
Curriculum resources for diversifying learning, and the regular at classroom.
Resources for high school and college students with invisible disabilities.

To write-books, articles, do research, etc.

Return to school for my Ph.D.

To study the impact that invisible disabilities such as ADD and learning disabilities have on career choice, career stability, job satisfaction, and other areas that impact the disabled person.
To educate employers and businesses about accommodating persons with invisible disabilities, diversity issues related to these disabilities
Developing training and policy materials that will enable employers and employees to understand the needs of both parties and ensure that the disability can be accommodated, while meeting the duties of the position and the needs of the employer.

Good question, tough to answer, and the answer is dynamic; it changes over time and in response to life situations. I just finished a long road to a masters degree and yet i'm not certain its my life calling. To be sure, i'm great at it, I excel, receive accolades, etc.. At the same time, i've done it for so very long, Its hard to think of going back in (I took some time off to finish the degree). In the midst of all this, I found my creative outlet in photography; something I also excel in. In the long hours of photography, including image editing, I become encompassed, engaged, and fulfilled. Its diverse enough, dynamic enough to hold my attention infinitely and its interesting enough that I lose track of time. Just rambling I suppose, its a realization that i've had recently.

Sometimes ya gotta laugh as a viable option to tears, or as the Kid once told me..."Mom? You had a good time because it was fun. Its called 'fun' because its FUN. DUH!!" :eyebrow:.

Another dream of mine is to bring my former stepson and the Kid's half-brother to SC someplace closer to me. His momma has MS :( and will be living out her life in Indiana after relocating from NY State. I made a promise to that boy and to his aunties a long time ago...if he needs me, I hope I can be there for him, but its kinda hard with him in NY.

Wow, there are a lot of things I want to do.....

I want to flip houses, this seems like such a fun way to be creative and make money....

I want to be an art therapist and a yoga instructor, so I think it would be fun to do weekend retreats where people can get art therapy, do yoga, maybe have an acupuncturist and/or a naturepath attend and help people.....

I would love to own a high end antique shop where faithful customers will spend 200$ on a 1972 lunch-pail that still has the thermos because they are rare.

I would like to create my own Barbie and Ken's that have realistic bodies.

I would love to be a novelist, my main character would be a whimsical, smart, ADDer.

I would love to do more geneology and then visit the places my family has lived, worked, etc.

I would love to build my dream home from scratch, picking out everything down to the brackets, putting my own sweat into it also. My dream home would have a ten car garage behind it to house all of my future cars, I have an avid love for cars, especially muscle cars.

I would like to make my own furniture, clocks, etc.

Sorry to bore you all to tears with my long list. Also, I want a swing set wherever I roam, they are very therapeutic to me. I too want to stay young at heart all my life.

Haven't they changed the laws to prevent flipping houses? I thought so, but I may be way off base too...how bADD of me!

Houseflipping does sound like fun unless like me you will have a child in the house until at least 2023. Sigh!

Hmm, I don't know if it is illegal. I know they do it on H&G tv and on A&E, but, I am thinking maybe certain states don't allow it....or maybe there are laws about how someone goes about doing it.

Aw, come on Crazy, you could have your kids help you install the hard wood floors.:p

Hey, a girl can have a sense of humor can't she?

I was LMAO when I was picturing you getting your kids to help with a floor and what it might look like when they were done. I would definitely be creative. :D

My floor would more than likely look like an inner-city graffito of some anime characters then Chele :D. I ought to get them into custom mural painting for houses and live off the proceeds!
