From Advisers Reject Strong ADHD Warnings: WASHINGTON TIMES (Washington, DC); March 23, 2006, n.p.
"It's being handed out like it's candy," Bessner said of ADHD drugs. "It's too easily accessible."
Hmmm...tell that to my insurance company, and my friend Tanya, and my friend Mo, and her mom and brother...

Easy to get? Are they serious? not only are pharmacy's limited in the amount of stimulant medication they get each month to give to patience, but if they run out you have to find another pharmacy and hope to god they accept yuor insurence. AND each month you have to get a new handwritten presciprion filled out and physically take it to the pharmacy. (At least in my case) My doctor is not allowed to phone in my prescriptions.
Now if they are talking about diagnosis I might agree more readily. A lot of times people get misdiagnosed by doctors who have little to no expierience with ADD.
Not in British Columbia, Canada. They removed some stimulant meds from the controlled substance category after years of monitoring the drugs and found the theories about stimulant meds being abused and sold on the streets just weren't true.
Most family doctors in my small city will not prescribe stimulant meds without an assessment by a specialist.

Shoot, let him have ADD for a year or two and have to go on a regular "Monthly" basis to get his ADD medication prescription from a doctor, and then make another trip to the pharmacy to drop off the prescription, and then return to pick up the medication at the pharmacy, and see if he still thinks it's too accessible!
Who the heck is this Bessner person anyway????????????

She's one of the parents who was lobbying to get the FDA to put a black box warning on all ADHD meds. She said they made her daughter commit suicide. From reading between the lines in the newspapers about the girl, she didn't sound ADHD but in the beginning phases of Bipolar. No childhood history of symptoms. All the reports (both Bessner's and other suicides) say that before the suicide attempt, the victim entered a state a mania. Which is exactly opposite of the effects on the ADHD brain. But my husband (a teacher) has seen so many parents doctor shop a diagnosis that this doesn't suprise all that much.
