View Full Version : General question
Hello,
I just want to ask all those NON-ADD'ers out there about how often they paid attention in class/lectures in school/college... 50% of the classes/ lecture in an year? 80% of the classes in an year?
I barely listened to maybe 4 classes in whole entire life!? But I knew I was missing out on a lot because that is the purpose of school and classes/lectures.. to listen!?
angelfishtales 08-09-06, 09:56 AM I think it depends on what kind of learner you are... I went to a college that had NO lectures or exams ~ this worked REALLY well for me. Instead of lectures we had seminars of no more than 15 students in a circle discussing and debating the topics of study and instead of exams we wrote papers. If I had gone to a regular college, I don't think I would have made it through grad school...

What was the name of the college you went to?
angelfishtales 08-09-06, 10:54 AM Sarah Lawrence College...
Eugene Lang College, New School is like that too...
Sarah Lawrence College has a beautiful campus. I love the non-traditional approach that they have there, and I wish more schools would adopt that approach.
I'm jealous.:o

You're really looking for answers to that question? Because I can only remember NOT paying attention a few times in my 4 years of college. Paying attention is sort of the "default" thing that I do. If I wasn't paying attention to the lecture it was because I was too tired to keep my eyes open, or too distracted by someone trying to talk to me, or occasionally passing notes back and forth with a friend about something else. But those times were few and far between.
But, if you ever ask how often I WENT to class, you might get a different answer! :p But when I was there, I was paying attention almost 100% of the time.
Crazy~Feet 08-09-06, 05:49 PM Well now, I believe I always listened, my ability to process what I hear is what's subject to debate IMO.
Crazy
Hey Crazy~Feet,
How did the informatiion seem to change when you were processing it?
X-Man
You're starting to make me jealous! LOL!

I'd assume it's the difference between hearing it and actually understanding what's being said? Like reading a page/s of a book, and then realising you didn't take any of it in.

I aced college level psychology...as a freshman, and I had questions that stumped my profs!
Crazy

ClarityWhere 08-15-06, 04:35 AM I got to classes. It was important to keep up on my sleep. My college had lots of 'tutorials', very small seminars, and I even managed to fall asleep in those. One professor used to kick my feet to wake me up. (7 or 8 in that class, we sat in a semi-circle.) Also had a very difficult time staying up to write papers.
But the OP asked about non-ADDers ... there's plenty of distraction in college, and a lot of growing-up stuff not involved with the academics. Still, I was always awed by the ability of other students to mess around, have a good time, do non-class stuff over 50% of the time, and still get good grades (at a demanding place) and do the paperwork necessary to get into grad school. One friend asked me why I was so stressed about exams. She said "you're always studying, or headed to the library to study, so you're going to do so much better than the rest of us." If only.
