I started on ADD medicine about 2 months ago and I have absolutely NO appetite at all. I have to force myself to eat. Anyone else have that effect from ADD meds? I know it is common. I love the ritalin otherwise and so far I am not underweight but another 10 pounds and I will be too thin. I am on generic ritalin short acting and can't take anything else because of the expense. I would hate to quit this as it has helped me so much. No side effects otherwise. Maybe after a while my appetite will be normal again. Comments or experience?
Which 'ADD medicine' did you start, Adhdg ?

Which 'ADD medicine' did you start, Adhdg ?I was on Ritalin SR at first (20 mg) and it was not long acting enough and so he switched me to 3 doses of 10 mg generic ritalin a day. It works really well for me except just for that loss of appetite.

I don't eat much on Methylphenidate.
I'm male early 30's 5'11, 62kgs
10 years ago when on Prozac, i weight 85kgs-much of it fat. SSRI's arrrr
did you try taking it with food? i have no appetite if i take it on an empty stomache (like it says to). my dr said it is fine to take it with breakfast and lunch. then my appetite is pretty much normal, which is good because i love to eat. im pretty thin - i would think that's the norm with add'ers though.

What is the difference between Ritalin SR, and generic?
I dont understand why it would be 20mg on Ritalin SR, then reduced to 10mg on Ritalin generic?
I am on Ritalin PMS... what is the difference?
I also heard of Ritalin LA?
huh, huh, huh?
I started on ADD medicine about 2 months ago and I have absolutely NO appetite at all. I have to force myself to eat. Anyone else have that effect from ADD meds?I have experienced that side effect many times in the past, but it does tend to get better over time. For me it would take months for that side effect to taper away. It usually depended on the drug I was on at the time. It was worse for me on Ritalin and Dexedrine than any of the other prescription stimulants.
You might want to consider incorporating some of those meal replacement shakes like Ensure into your diet. They taste great, and they come in many flavors. They are also very portable, and convenient. They are available in several varieties like high fiber, high calcium, high calorie, and even high protein. Ensure also comes in a powder form that you mix with water. You can find meal replacement shakes at most grocery stores, and all drug stores seem to carry it too. These are not intended to replace solid food in your diet, but for me they were a Godsend when I was forcing food into myself to overcome that anorecit effect like you're are currently experiencing.
Ensure is the brand name product, but there are also generic versions of Ensure that are made by your grocery store chain, or your drug store chain that are more affordable than the Ensure.
Here is a link to a free sample coupon from Ensure. All you have to do is print it out and take it to the store to redeem it for a free sample bottle. Good luck, and hang in there, because that side effect does taper in time.

Ritalin increased my appetite big time! I actually gained around 20 pounds (I think) within a six month time frame.
Adderall on the other hand, slightly decreases my appetite.

huh, huh, huh?He changed me from the Ritalin SR (sustained release) 20 mg. to THREE times a day ritalin (short acting) three times a day mostly because I needed my dosage increased and also because the generic is cheaper. On the LA not sure what the difference is. The SR is supposed to last 6-8 hours I believe and the short acting for me lasts about 4-5 hours. I really don't know much about the LA except that I think it stands for long acting.
My appetite is getting a little better at times. The medicine is working great still. Maybe I am evening out. Thanks everyone!
