Do you like it when you do more than one thing at a time?

When I drive I like to have the car stereo cranked all the way up.. I don't tune out as much and maintain a better focus. Why? Like today I was driving with the radio full blast and eating pizza but still was more aware of my surroundings than if I were doing nothing but driving.

Is anybody else like this?

I actually don't like to multitask. However, I do routinely task switch 3-4 things and can do a lot more if I must. I don't like it though , because too many mistakes get made that way.

I"m a one task at a time person. I hate hate hate it when I"m on the phone and someone tries to talk to me in person at the same time. My brain can't process verbal information from 2 sources at once.

I can however daydream while I do other things.....like drive:o i know it sounds dangerous but I am aware of my souroundings, trust me.

I'm exactly the same way.... My multitasking is internal, not external. I can switch back and forth between different threads like crazy, but I can't speak on the phone and drive at the same time, for that I might latch onto the conversation and forget about driving... not good. I can't have other people in my vehicle when I drive, though my step-father has learned to close his mouth in such situations.

I do one thing at the time- and i can do it very well. I am slow to switch from one task to another and like aizlyne put it I can't talk to the phone and with somebody else at the same time...But I do like to do something different with each new task-otherwise it gets boring.

I do and it works well for me most of the time.

I like doing one thing at a time to do it well. Cannot stand talking on the phone while doing something else, e.g., driving, listening to the radio.

I don't even like to watch people multitask; it gives me impression they are not conscious of any.

Like a previous poster mentioned, I prefer to swith tasks slowly.

Sometime though, I like the tv on when I'm on the computer or reading; other times I wear earplugs!

Im a task switcher. I am usaully in the middle of doing three tasks at once, but only because I keep getting distracted. However, dont talk to me while the tv or radio is on, or when I am on the phone. My husband will come home and start talking to me about important things while my daughters are running around like lunatics and the tv is on. I just put my hands to my ears and say. Im sorry I cant focus on you right now too much going on. Please talk to me when the kids are in bed. He gets it because he is similar when he wants to listen to someone speak.

It varies for me. Driving, I refuse to do unmedicated in the first place, so yep, loud music and MY MUSIC, thanks! The Kid hates it, and that's what my dad would call a "tough one" :D.

I often use loud music to distract me from sensory integration pain and avoid the overload/meltdown that may ensue if I don't have my music.

On the other foot, if there are no sensory issues and its just a plain routine task, I am a one-channel operator for the most part. I do not always have that luxury though (SAHM, must fold washing while watching TV) and while the tasks I choose to multitask on are rote and simple after years and years of repetition? Do not disturb me then either! Its all the energy I have available to manage that! Like cooking, let's face it, that is serious multitasking if you want the food to all be done at the same time. If you disturb me, you switch me from the Food Channel to another channel, and my remote is faulty in the extreme!

lol i can only do one thing at a time as i zone in on what im doing everything around me sort of is like on a 'pause' button or 'mute' . I cant stand patys, too much buzzing going around too many distractions i cant concentrate when someone is talking to me i end up looking behinde them or just not being able to string together what they had just said or hyperfocus on the food im eating!lol i bet i seem very ruse and aloof, i dont mean to be i just cant controle it!

I suppose this is quite extreme behaviour is it? i hope not!!! i know when i drive i hate it if someone talks to me, then again im learning!if im painting i hate when soemone interfears lol i sound mean,i love talking to people just not when im focusing on something my brain cant do both it goes to shut down!

lol but i do know when i focus i can do great things!

I am more of a multi-tasker, like i cant watch tv without doing something else, sometimes im on the phone and watching tv at the same time and I seem to like it more.

I do switch from task to task as well, like i'll be on the computer, then i'll start playing guitar, then i'll go back on the computer then I might watch tv...

I can only do one thing, at a time, efficiently.

Non-efficiently- about four things at once.

I can multi-task as long the different task are using different senses. Hearing is a partial exception, I can listen to two different conversations at once but I can only answer one person at a time. Talking to one person on the phone the second in person normally confuses the person on the phone because they can’t tell I am talking to some one else(lack of visual cueing). I can talk on the phone and read threads, and post. I actually focus better when I am posting and listening to music. I don’t care of TV much when on the computer because they are both visual, and for some reason I can only make my two eyes go in one direction at a time.

How many task I can do is limited by my senses more than my brains ability to process, however it is harder to do two complex task at once I can only do that a short period of time before over load sets in . I switch fairly fast from one thing to another but will integrate two different things if it is physically possible..

I don't know if it's me..but I never considered listening to music, while I'm doing something else, a 'separate' task.

Unless one of the songs makes me wanna 'gittup n dance'. (0:

I am the poster child for multi-tasking. I like alot of noise. I like noisy backgrounds. I love overcrowded restaurants. The sound of all of the commotion is relaxing to me.

It has taken me 38 years to figure out that I am better doing one task at a time. But my brain is not wired that way. and I love distractions.

I don't necessarily like distrations,(or noisy food joints) I can just do more than one thing at a time!

Too much noise is different than doing more than one thing at a time in (my opinion)

Apparantly I multitask better than previously reported. I must admit that most of my multitasking is on a mental level however.

I can:

Break down images on an instruction page into a mental image I can "see" and make it happen under a dryer tub.

Continue to stifle my frustration with BDH and speak as kindly as I am able.

Admit I need a break yet maintain the "image" and attack it after a nice ciggy and soda.

Juggle the image of the underside yet manage to cogitate another missing pattern and find the key to the solution.

And nobody has died yet either! :D I am also discovering that my new meds are working gangbusters at quelling my sensory issues (lemme tell ya, banging hollow metal objects would have once been a very serious injury indeed!) and stay focused enough to remember that the meds will wear off sooner or later.

There is hope!

Multitasking let's see, while watching television, I can:

knit
carry on a conversation with my husband about something
make notes about something else
think about how I'm going to decorate a room
or pondering all the jobs around the house I haven't gotten to
stop every so often to pick up the mess around me and rearrange things
then run back and forth to the washing machine and dryer to put things and take them out during commercials
may be running step up and down the stairs to the kitchen or getting something to eat
And keep up with the entire plot of the show, at least most of the time
maybe not all exactly at the same time but I do'nt just sit down and watch TV show it drives me nuts. That's why I hate meetings and having to sit still listen to people talk on and on and on. I have to have something else to do or I go nuts.
When I travel I have to take at lease for five things to do because I get bored with one and switch to the other world finish something new to do something else I take books and projects and sketchbooks, pens and pencils and knitting stuff. Unfortunately have to take up more than my fair share of the seating area but, with fewer kids at home, it doesn't matter. Plus it keeps my eyes off my husbands driving and makes things much happier in the car. :D

When I drive I "look" for things with my hands, like feeling around and glancing to find receipts and organize my purse while driving in the rain on the interstate, etc. It's like I can't "just drive"! My friends and family found out and now :o I try to just drive- It seems I have to do something with my hands. I found an answer- bubble wrap!

I meant to add that I can hyperfocus on the phone and somebody standing right beside me is talking to me trying to get my attention but I am so hyperfocused that I don't even see or hear them. Also, I can't do a task while on the phone or have a conversation with anybody while I'm doing a task.

I am like boone. I am multitasking right now (or task switcher)

Entering in recipes into my cookbook program, switching to the forums and reading a bit, then switching to watching tv, then back to cookbook program. (and while doing cookbook program, scanning pictures of the recipes out of the paper cookbooks into my program) lol.

It drives my husband nuts.

I'm browsing through this thread, wondering if my daughter can still use a gift card she was given last year, singing along with David Bowie and swiveling back and forth in my chair.

I can't stand to watch TV without getting up to check on other things, paying bills, knitting (I can only knit unpatterned rectangles, which serve as either scarves or baby blankets), reading (always several books at once) etc. But I can hyperfocus on reading very easily.

All of this seemed perfectly typical of the human race to me until it was pointed out to me that other people did not behave this way. But I still don't understand why they don't.

NON-MULTI-TASKER HERE. The only time I can do more then one thing at a time is when I am doing something that is routine, like driving, I can have the radio on (can't stand driving without it actually) and talking to someone in the car with me. But if I am talking on my phone I have to have the radio off. I can watch TV and knit, I can kind of watch TV and play on the computer, but it's more like switching back and forth, as I am really focused in on one or the other at a time. I'm watching Dick Clark right now, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
When I am on the phone at home, I can do other things but I do them a lot slower then I would normally. And I can't stand it when someone tries to talk to me when I am on the phone, I can't listen to more then one person at a time. I actually get really upset if I have 2 people trying tell me something at the same time, like with the kids, it makes me crazy.
I can't do anything when I read, it has to be completely quiet when I read, and even then my mind still wonders and I can only read a few pages at a time. Sometimes if I get really into what I'm reading I can stay focused and read a lot more, but that is not often.
I am not really good at switching tasks a lot of the time, like at work, I pretty much have a routine and if something happens to mess up my routine I get totally freaked out. Yeah, not good, waitressing is really a multi-tasking job, and being forgetful and unorganized isn't good either, I make a lot less $ then most of the other waitresses, it makes me really sad sometimes. But hopefully when I finally get my meds straight, maybe I can be more efficient and make more money!
So in summary (LOL), I can only do 2 things at a time when they are 2 things that I don't need to really think about, 2 routine things, like folding laundry and watching TV.
