View Full Version : Are these signs my dose is 2 high, or med not working?
afhopie44 08-13-06, 05:18 PM I'm just curious what happens when a medication your on for your add is too high. I am on 54 mg concerta and i think it may be too high of a dose. I've been on it about 7 weeks now. After about 5-6 hours of taking it i get really tired. And when im on it im really impatient, want to do things NOW right away.. not in 1 minute, get irritable and angry over stupid things, and its either my way or the highway. Should meds help me with this? Or is this something not caused by add?
I also have a very small appetite when im on concerta. If I'm busy doing something i won't eat. I am not sure if I've lost weight beause i havent been on a scale lately but i notice my clothes fitting differently.
Then i get reallly bad headaches on concerta... they come suddenly then they either stay until I take something for the headache like iburporfen or they go away really fast. Its annoying and i know it isn't normal.
I can't focus on anything.. like sitting down and watching tv. I sit and watch tv and then i want to get on my computer and do somthing or clean my room or go to sleep. Is this hyperness? And a sign my med isn't working? Should i get my dose adjusted by my doc or try another med completely?
DId anyone have these effects on any meds?
I went on a vacation over the weekend with my 2 friends and they both made hte comment that i was really impatient and/or hyper. Like not running around like im crazy hyper just hyper that i want to do it NOW or never ya know? So it started to make me think maybe my med isn't helping me right.
JustNeedHelp 08-13-06, 07:46 PM not to sound like a anti-meds person but PLEASE get off concerta there are soo many other treatment options concerta is probably the worst medication for ad/h/d, try ritalin, if not that try focalin, and if no that adderall, but concerta was just manufactured wrong the shell concerta comes in (when wet turns into a gel a VERY VERY sticky gel, that gel can then get stuck in your intestines causing constipation which can lead to depression and plus i personally feel if after 40 mg's or ritalin doesnt work then stop trying the methlphenidate medication as it probably wont work (and trust me if ritalin doesnt work then the others prolly wont, but ask for focalin then if that doesnt work try adderall or strattera (strattera highly recommended) no side effects but it made me way too tired when i took it (the tiredness went away within an hour after takin it (which is why i would take it at night) good luck
and YES your medication in my opinion is too high for you, try: strattera, or focalin, then move onto the amphetamine group if that doesnt work, if you are getting the opposite of what your meds are suppose to do then you are overdosing or coming close too it! (but overdose does not mean death it just means your taking way too much your (taking too much or...) over a safe dose and have you asked your doc about these symptoms TALK TO YOUR DOC asap you can move up your appointments you know! call your doctor office and ask to move up your doctors date asap!
but thats my opinion and sry for rambling on and on and on, good luck
afhopie44 08-13-06, 08:17 PM Ive tried strattera ritalin and adderall and i got the best results of ritalin and adderall xr. The ritalin worked okay but i didntlike how i had to keep taking it so i suggested concerta to my doc. I am thinking of switching back to ritalin or adderall xr. Adderall worked good but stopped working all of a sudden. I dn't know if i needed a med holiday or an increased dose but my doc then switched me to ritalin which is what i requested.
afhopie44,
It sounds like the concerta may be wearing off at around 7 hours and you may be having rebound. Many people do not get the 10-12 hours of activity and have to take a second dose (my daughter will be on 2 doses a day when school starts). Is the concerta giving you results similar to the ritalin or not working as good? If you are not getting any benefit then you should be looking at another med; if you are getting good results for the 7 hours then you should be looking at reducing the rebound. Either way you need to discuss this with your doctor. You might also post in the concerta section and see if you get more responses. Good luck.
mguffey31 08-14-06, 01:27 PM Vickie is right, I experienced the same thing. Mine lasted six hours and I became very irritable and felt like crap. Tried the redosing thing which didn't work. It has to wear off too so you will inevitably feel like crap at some point regardless. Focalin XR is great although I am experiencing a similar duration of action but don't have the crappy side effects.
Master Rat 08-14-06, 07:26 PM I know your overdosed. These drugs work like a bath tub curve; which looks like a bath tub upside down. The top being the best dose for you making you most efficient mentally, the left side of the curve is too little and the right side of the curve is too much. The point i am trying to make is too much medication can make you dummer and more aggressive than when you were not medicated, by lowerring your position on the curve. I would ask your doc over the phone if you can back the medication off to 36mg / dose and experiment from there after you stabilize.
Aggressive behavior is almost always a symptom of too much medication when it comes to stimulants. Another tip off is a hard let down when the drugs wear off.
You can also get tunnel vission, see white fuzzy dots and hyperflexia - which feels like your hand is touching something close, when it is not.

Not necessarily. I have to chime in that for me, and for the Kid, the high dose is required for maximum relief from severe symptoms. The hard letdown is simply rebound, and like Vickie so aptly stated, not everybody experiences the so-called all day sustained release from Concerta. I know that not only I, but also Scattered, have had to tweak and tweak our Concerta to find a staggered dose that worked for us. And work it does!
JustNeedHope it is not always "the worst medication", for me it is the ONLY one that provides relief. Not to say that a med switch will harm the OP though.
And OP this may seem kind of gross, but some people on higher doses of Concerta experience a bowel-rush from the IR Ritalin portion...you might want to watch for that and if needed, check to see if your stools contain the non-digestible portion of the Concerta tab. If you pass the tab too soon, you will not be getting the full effects of the SR Ritalin in Concerta.
Crazy
Thanks for that tidbit Crazy:

These are the seemingly small type of thing that no one ever mentions, but may be important for the few that are affected.
Crazy~Feet 08-14-06, 09:54 PM Yes it is a crucial bit if it effects you. I am considering switching the Kid to Metadate because she has this particular reaction more often than not.
C~F
It may be to high. Have you tried the 36mg yet? I take 54mg of Concerta and am really happy with it. When I was on the lower doses of it, I had some rebound, and it was wearing off rapidly. On 54mg, there isn't any rebound, and it lasts about 9 hours. For the first few weeks on the 54mg I know I was a bit hyper-focused. I couldn't get away from the computer, lol. That seems to have went away though. You seem to have a lot of stuff going on, so I would definitely run it by your doctor.
Definitely talk to your doctor and see what he thinks. Good luck!

Where did you find this information?
Proscrire 08-15-06, 12:35 PM Af, had a similar reaction and yeah, it was just too much med at once. Doing fine on 36 though. I think there's something up with some metabolisms that just run through meds really fast. Sort of like the reverse of people that can eat anything and not gain a pound.
JustNeedHelp 08-16-06, 11:04 PM Where did you find this information?my doc. after being put on it for a littl eover 3 months and having almost (litterally almost NO bowl (spelling?) movements, my doc said i would need to get a colonoscapy (again spelling?) is what they would do is, because the shells are so gummy and sticky ( i will do an experiment with a left over 36 mg pill and post pictures to show ya'll, but the 'tube' can get stuck in the linning of your intestines and colon and can cause constipation as the stool cannot move normally (or at all some times) so they would take a special tool to 'scrape off'
the extra shells that did not pass or dissolve in stomach (my doctor said that too me after i mentioned bathroom problems, all i had to say was bathroom problems and she knew exactly what i was talking about (but agian i will do an experiment to show how sticky the lining can be) and if you want to do a quick experiment yourself and take a concerta pill and scrape off the white or red powder layer and and (with wet or damp fingers hold the pill (under the white or red layer there is a clear leayer thats the sticky stuff jsut hold it on your fingers after doign a physical activity or if you have sweaty palms or just wet em and hold the pill after the white coating is removed
( I DO NOT RECOMMEND ALTERING YOUR PILL IN ANY WAY SHAPE FORM OR FASHION UNLESS YOU INTEND TO DISPOSE OF IT PROPERLLY AFTER DONE WITH YOUR EXPERIMENT)
JustNeedHelp 08-17-06, 12:06 AM ok i did a quick experiment if you would like to see the video/pictures of it PM me or better if you know of a way or if you yourself want to host the files for a few weeks to let people see them they are not the absolute best qualtiy but they get the point accross (not saying they are bad but there not landscape photos!
steel077 07-22-07, 06:02 PM For the first week or so for me at least, any Concerta at all seemed to have a wakeup 'perk' and make me more socially active as I have the hypo version of ADD(not necessarily more concentrating on work though). However, I found this 36 mg stopped working after only the first day, on the 3rd I felt less perk, and by end of week it was like no even taking the medication. I'm currently using 54 mg titrating up.
On the other hand, I think just as with my experiences with Ritalin, probably when its overdosing, as the above post explained, there is an apex, and after you pass it, the positive effects decline, or, possibly you'll feel a bit dizzy or nausious (sp).
Hope this helps.
I believe the 54 mg that I take start to wear off after about 6 hours. I usually drink some coffee or have something with caffiene this seems to help me a lot.
