How does someones weight impact amphetamine dosage? Imagine You have someone severely overweight like double the size of an american male. Were talking in the 400 lb range. Would it be considered inappropriate for a psych to prescribe 80mg considering the size of the person? I know what the FDA has to say on the matter but their reccomendation is for someone of normal size.

I know alcohols effect on you is directly related to your weight. But I haven’t heard anything about add drugs. I would guess there’s little effect on weight, as always ask you doctor.

I think the your dosage depends upon how fast your body metabolizes the medication not your weight.

I think the your dosage depends upon how fast your body metabolizes the medication not your weight. So young people like me (age 22) are going to likly have to take more then, some one who is 45 and over weight. I do think your correct.

According to a Canadian psychiatrist "Dr. Moïse Maurice Benchitrit," who specialized in ADHD/ADD in children and adults, there appears to be a connection between the weight of an ADHD/ADD patient, and the effective dose of their stimulant drug. Here's a quote from an article he presented concerning the use of stimulant drugs in treating ADHD/ADD to the Ontario Psychiatric Associations annual meeting in January of 1996, "In my practice patients who are obese or over-weight, require more amounts than the ones who are slim. These amounts can reach up to 7 mg/Kg. weight per day, sometimes in divided doses of the slow release form. The more "'Hyperactive'" the person is, the more medication this person will require to be able to function under "'normal circumstances of stress in life.'"

Here is a link to the article: http://www.benchitrit.com/content_lng01/03/03_01/03_01.html

I found the link to this article here at this site earlier this summer in anothers post. I did not read it all at first, and it remained in my favorites folder for about a month. Then one day I ran across it and decided to read it in more detail. I was impressed with what I read, and I found much of what he said to be true from my own experience of having taken these drugs over the years. Hope this helps.

I am a wound up top and a small man and well I am on the mother-load of dexedrine 95 mg and that I feel is the right dose... it has stayed there for a time and my pharmacist tends to seem strange about it but it isn't illegal and I dont find anything "abusable" about it...

I am an overweight person and I need a very little ammount both types of stimulant medication. I am so glad the person who prescribed me AD/HD meds knew what she doing. If she prescribed it by weight I probably would have died of a heart attack from way too much medication.

My response in this thread was to the original question posed by D.B. Cooper about, "How does someones weight impact amphetamine dosage?" In the link I provided with my response to their question is quite a bit more information that the Dr. stated just prior to that quote I posted. Here is what he said just prior to what I originally copied and pasted in this thread:

"The amounts necessary for an individual vary according to the weight of the person, the state of the metabolism, the kind of food they ate, before, at the time and after they took their medication, and the physical activity of the person. Requirements vary from person to person, so a standard dose cannot really be generalized for everybody.

In my experience a great deal of variation occurs from one individual to another, and therefore, one needs to pay a close attention to subtle variations when choosing the appropriate amount which will be efficient for that particular person, schedule of intake and type of medication."

I can't imagine any Dr. ever prescribing any drug based on a patients weight alone. Some people are hypersensitive to certain drugs, while others need massive amounts (by normal dosing protocols) to achieve any effect at all. What this Dr. was describing is how everyone is different, and how his experience has allowed him to witness a trend among many of his patients with higher weight, and a connection to a higher effective dose for their prescription stimulants.

I have read that metabolism and diet affect the amount of drug used by our bodies. I have gastric reflux, so I assume that my body is on the acidic side and with that, my body does not metabolize the adderall,,,, it discards the unused medication through the kidneys. I`ve tried taking adderall with a few tums and something high in fat,, eg: a handful of cashews, a few strips of bacon, an egg. Of course it`s impossible to do this all the time, but there seems to be a difference in the effect and duration of adderall. It is a drag to have to go to such extremes to recieve the full potential outcome of thr prescribed medication. Oh, I forgot to mention that my metabolism has always been super-charged.
