I am running a marathon, I hope I make it. My question is that taking drugs xp like performace enhancing drugs in illeagle, but i am prescribe adderall. Doe you think it is ok to take befor the race?? when i run with adderall i focus more on the run not when i am done, it dose not make me run faster jus helps me focus. What do you think illeagle or not moral? or ok because it does not give me a edge just make my brain slow down and consintrate?

i do have a script so i dont think it will disqualify me, i wont even place in the run, just want to finish it, i can do 13 minute mile for 17 miles so far, the race is next month.

well do the do a urinalysis? if so then i woudl say NO and not to take any meds for that day and possibly not for the day before the race either that way you dont test positive, and be disqualified although the amps may make you more focused they might also make your heart race faster, if you wanna focus drink a soda or energy drink befor ethe race that should help a little. good luck. and what kinda race is it? and for the moral part not sure, i guess it could go either way, but this is my opinion.

Talk to the rules commitee for that event and see what they have to say. Also, you need to talk to your doctor about using adderall during a high endurance event.

my doc knows i have been training and knows how many miles i run each week and she says its great. I have been running on and off for a couple of years and about 6 months ago i commited to this marathon its 26.2 mile run. I am not one to keep comitments and most that know me are pry thinking its just another on of my phases and he wont do it, but i am gonna do this. It iss close to finnally doing it and this time i will finish what i started or ill pass out in the street trying. I am not concerned about my heart rate, it does not seam to raises it any befor i started taking it. I figure they test the pros and people that might run fir the price but i am in it to finish and i may be last but i will.

Congratulations on making the commitment, and good luck for the race! As others said you should check to see if they'll be testing and what their policy is on prescription meds. From my experience in smaller races they don't test anyone, and in larger races I wasn't anywhere near the "elites" they might have tested. From what you've said I don't think you have to worry about disqualifying, but you should get official word on that.

It sounds like you have good experience from training as to how the Adderall affects you, but that "17 miles so far" sends up a flag. If the race is only a month away, about now's the time you should start shortening your long runs and focus more on intensity. (Apologies if you knew that and I just misunderstood.)

I'm seeing some flags like traveler. I take dex to help my adhd. I've found that it's an advantage to skip the meds on race day or even on a big training run. It seems to help keep my heart rate down, which is desirable for me.
No marathon yet - Ian.

.....and while I'm not terribly concerned about failing a drug test (I have an Rx of course), I do wonder about the additional drain on my system. I often notice greater chance of feeling dehydrated while on Adderall, which would certainly be exacerbated over the course of a 26.2 run....even with water/gatorade every mile. I have no data to back that up, but it is a concern of mine.

That said, I recently took my regular dose before running the NYC Half Marathon and I can't say that I felt terribly dehydrated or excessivly drained afterwards. Come to think of it, I actually walked back up from Battery Park to my hotel near Times Square after the race....so I mustn't have been too banged up.

Without rambling further, does anyone have an information or research on muscle cramping or dehydration with Adderall? Though I expect to be sore after a long race, I'd be foolish not to take measures to minimize the strain.

....the NYC 1/2 was not a great race for me....not only was it pouring for half the race, and a REALLY early (7am start), but I overslept in my crappy hotel room. :( I ended up running something like a 1:45.

In the past, I've run the Boston Marathon and the Disney Marathon with slightly better success. I've run Boston in around 3:35 and disney (which was nice and flat but COLD in January) in around 3:30.

My goal for this year was to work on speed in the shorter races (10K and 1/2 Marathons) so that I might someday get fast enough to actually qualify for Boston or the NYC Marathon. I've run with charities in the past, but it would be a nice accomplishment to finally run a race at the required pace to qualify for a number (7:15 pace for a Marathon, 6:45 pace for a 1/2).

I'm running the Boston Half Marathon on 10/8, so I've been experimenting with my medication both before and after a long run. So far it seems that I've had no adverse effects from taking Adderall before a "long" run on Sunday. No more cramping than usual, no dehydration problems (though
I do "lube up" the chafing areas), and no heart rate issues. I'd say that the only real problem is remembering to eat right after a strenuous workout, since the adderall definitely dulls my appetite.

So, are there any other runners in training right now? What are the goals/paces of the ADD running group? :)

My first was Boston, which was such a rush that it seemed easier than I originally imagined. Don't get me wrong, it's still a grind to make it 26.2, but the crowd support and design of the course/route really make a big difference in my opinion. By contrast, Disney was flat and booring, and there was almost NO crowd since it began before the park was even open. I had visions of running next to the Pirates of the Carribbean ride, when in reality the majority of the 26.2 miles was highway connecting the various parks. :(

In summary, if you get a good race with good support the crowd can provide an extra push like you won't believe.

Good luck!

I could be said to be in training. That is, were it not for an interesting summer of spraining my ankle (twice!), heavy smoke from forest fires (I live in Montana), and now re-stressing that ankle. In the midst of all that my big goal was finishing the Bridger Ridge Run, preferable beating my worst time. (6:06, the race is 20 miles across a mountain range. I ended up 5:10 so I was happy.)

I had been planning to run up Gallatin Peak, which would be the highest mountain run for me (11,015 feet), but adding the recent snowfall to everything I don't know if that'll happen this year. I don't have any recently measured paces to compare, but your marathon times are impressing me!

I need to sleep!!! I'm not doing anything but trying to keep my allergies at bay. Forest fires and harvest dust have me gasping for stamina. I didn't run once this week. Post nasal drip... never mind... :D I'll just go to bed and pick this up later. :D I'm just beginning to join in racing. 27.52 last winter for my first 5km is as good as it's been. Ran 500 miles last year and less this year. Was headed for a 10km this fall, but that's been wiped off by the smoke and dust.
Cheers!
