View Full Version : Adderall is making me gain weight!
Sweetpea25 09-08-06, 02:01 PM Been a while since I have been here. Anyway, we did concerta til we upped it three times and still stopped working. So we are now trying adderall. I lost about 25lbs in 2 months on concerta. It was fine as I was overweight and needed to lose. I could still stand to lose another 15-20 but I am not trying and it will not bother me if I do not.
Since beginning the adderall, I have gained 4 pounds (in a week!) and I am starving all the freaking time! I eat like a pro wrestler on this stuff. And I want Carbs and chocolate. I was never a big candy bar eater til now. I usually put away a couple a night. Love those Watchamacallits (thats the name of them) and I am packing away pizza like crazy. I constantly feel like I need to chew on something and cant use gum because of my Crowns and Caps on my teeth.
Help :faint:
For myself I tend to lose weight on Adderall. I don't feel the need to eat, and sometimes I have to force myself to eat small during the day to get nutrition and I usually feel hungry at dinner when it's wearing off. In fact, the medication is sometimes prescribed - in low doses and for a short time (under 6 months)- for people to lose weight.
I did however notice that Adderall in the beginning can cause you to bite down on your teeth, and keep your jaw tight. That went away for me after a couple of weeks of being on Adderall. Perhaps you can try a non-stick type gum for denture wearers or a low sugar candy. How many mg of Aderall are you taking? What was the dosage of Concerta?
hippobaby 09-08-06, 08:26 PM My first week on Adderall I was starving all the time. I thought for sure I was some weird freak who reacted opposite of everyone else on the medication. (I had the lucky pleasure of also being one of the very rare that was allergic to strattera, and figured I was just not meant for add drugs!) I started at 10mg XR, and also had hideous rebound effect with few benifits that first week. I stepped up to 15mg yesterday, and I definatly now am feeling the appetite suppression more. I am still not at the right dose, but slowly dosing up. I also gained a few the first week, but have now lost the few pounds now. I found I wasn't drinking enough water and was actually retaining fluid as a result... working on that to make sure I am well hydrated. I think not taking in enough water was also fuelling the feelings of hunger I was having.
Be patient, you likely are not at your needed dose just yet, and I think once you are your appetite will be less and things will balance out for you.
D.B. Cooper 09-08-06, 09:12 PM Well, theres a first time for everything.
Sweetpea25 09-08-06, 09:26 PM I am on 10mg of Adderall. I was on 54mg of concerta when I went off it. Yeah, I should probably drink more water...
lexscully 09-10-06, 08:25 PM My first couple of days on Adderall I did seem to want to eat more and was hungry, but that has gone away now. It's been two weeks since I started.
Honda Shadow 09-10-06, 08:41 PM I've been add 20 mg twice daily. Because of depression I gained about 30 lbs and needed to get it off since the weight gain fuels my depression. The most I've been overweight has been 70 lbs. Anyway since being on this med I have noticed that I don't have the desire to stuff my face when I get upset. The biggest thing I have noticed is that I am consuming diet coke, caffaine free, more that I have ever done. I know when my stomach is upset that the coke will settle it down. I never never drank more than l or 2 sodas a week.
I can go all day without eating, but I do feel better when I eat something small. Usely a peanut butter cracker or half a sandwich which I have to force myself to do only because my blood sugar level is going down. I feel much better. I don't like it when the meds wear off in the evening because I do get hungry, but not like I use to do. I have stopped snacking in the evening which is good. The old me want chocolate still, but when I do eat a small piece of it I feel sick. Infact, I want some chocolate now. Hang in there, when they get you regulated you'll probably losing some wait.
Sweetpea25 09-13-06, 10:22 AM Its been about 2 weeks now, my weight is bouncing all over the place. One day I weight 150, the next 156, the day ofter 152... I dunno what is going on. I am still eating like a pig.
I have noticed it makes me crave carbs. I dont think I have ate protein in days :faint:
Tons of diet coke like 6-12oz cans a day and I am up 1/2 pack of cigarettes.
I dunno if its really working either. I can tell when it wears off though. Normally if I take it around 8am its gone by 3or 4.:eyebrow:
jennyjay 09-13-06, 10:49 AM I don't think weight gain is even on the map for the side effects of Adderall. I wonder what Shire says about it?

I was the EXACT same on 10mg. In an effort to make the meds work somewhat better, I cut out caffeine, well limited to one small cup of coffee a day (from about 12) and not anywhere near when I would take the meds. Like 2 hours or more after. That helped a bit I found.
Also, when are you dosing up? Can you call your doc and ask for a dose increase? I hated 10mg... I was hungry, and the comedown, like you, started to hit me at 2pm. I had no benifits at all at that dose, felt crappy with the comedown which also tended to render me useless in the afternoon/ evenings as far a ADD symptoms.
I did 1 crappy week at 10mg XR, then 1 week at 15mg XR, which was FAR better and actually felt some positives without the side effects. Today I started 25mg XR. I really think you need to increase you dose.
Aaron_burr 09-17-06, 10:33 AM You mentioned chocolate ...
When I started taking Adderall, my appetite was generally down, but I had these unbelievable chocolate cravings, especially in the evening.
My doctor said it was probably not the sugar, it was a lack of potassium, because my cravings were directed at chocolate specifically and not at sweets in general. He recommended a low-dose potassium supplement.
Since I wasn't taking a multvitamin at the time, I started one that had potassium in it, and this seemed to help. I don't know if it was the placebo effect, or the potassium, or something else in the multi, but I've stopped cramming Snackey Cakes down my throat at night.
Hope that's of some use ...
~boots~ 01-17-08, 06:18 AM geez...I have gained weight since taking these meds...I think it's only because during the day I'm hardly hungry...and happy to eat morsels or nothing..but in the evening..when they wear off..I'm STARVING from the lack of food during the day :-)

That's typical
I feel like I've gained weight, but I guess I've just maintained. Probably from taking them every other day instead of regularly.
