My activity in this thread has died down to a very low trickle, in a good month.

I'm just experiencing a bit of burn out with life in general at the moment. My interest is still high, I still read the thread, and I still get a lot out of it.

I just think of something I want to say, realise how much typing I'm gonna have to do and just..... Sag? LOL! I'll be back soon enough.

Mimi virus, neuroplasticity {dogs and man}, evolution towards loss of self - without even thinking - have been three very important ideas - which have been immeasurably important in my understanding of mind of man. All your contributions.

As of recently - I've only written when I've needed to write - and not because I've felt the whole 'should write thing'; perhaps this idea may help?

There're a whole buncha' things which're floating around in our minds - just out of grasp - and which we want {more than anything} to 'realise' {to crystallise into words} - when writing in these one of these nebulous domains - our words gush forth without effort - and I *know* - from reading your posts - that you're ever so close in on all of this stuff.

One particular idea which has been kicking my head recently has been the observation of a population crash following a species growing beyond the environment which supports it. Malthus was cited by Darwin - and although responsible for some unsavoury ideas on our class systems - he was correct about the idea of a population crash following over-expansion of a population - even if just *slightly* beyond the threshold for their maintenance at steady-state --- and I really want to know why?

Ecologists call the resulting collapse of the population a crash, or die off. As a result of a crash, the carrying capacity for the overshot species, and for other species, becomes less than if the overshot species had not stumbled onto the stock in the first place. Because of the exponential nature of population growth in the presence of abundant resources, a single generation of the population--the most numerous generation-- experiences abundance in its youth, starvation in maturity, and premature death for most of its members. "Crash" is an apt term--a population crash can happen very quickly..

Why a crash? and not just simply a gentle decline in the population to below that threshold?

Lots of reasons. A big one is that carrying capacity is a function of multiple rescources and factors that both directly and indirectly contribute to over all capacity and stability in a given ecosystem. When carrying capacity is exceeded it isn't a matter of going a smidge over. By the time it gets close resources are being increasingly exploited, even the poorer ones. Other organisms dependent on that ecosystem begin to die off as well. The overall effect is so catostrophic that the "NEW BALANCE" that is achieved after the die off bears little resemblance to the original eco-system, is less productive, and less stable in the sense that it can't resist major stresses as well. The "crash" is, in a sense, an emergent phenomenon. There is a gradual element in a myriad of factors involved but by the time they become apparent the damage is done.

I'm trying to work out how closely allied emergence and evolution are as processes.

I don't have a problem with the idea of evolution outside of the context of life.

I'm wondering whether emergence is bi-directional and evolution is uni-directional, whereby evolution towards complexity is only one half of emergence - which, as you mention - can halt the transition to complexity with a frightening crash.

Though - the crash - generally permits retention of some of that species - and so - perhaps the idea of emergence/evolution to complexity is retained {constrained within environmental parameters).

I wonder whether the population retained following the crash - might be different from the population pre-crash?

Are we driving into emergent evolutionary territory here? ... whereby emergent evolution results in the genesis of novel species?

I'm having this recurrent image of a box - being filled - and hence expanding in three dimensions - and then sticking to another box - expansion in another dimension - and then sticking to three other box-box pairings.

Dan - Have you ever sat facing the sun - {actually facing the sun directly} with eyes (only) sufficiently averted - and just tried thinking deeply {daydreaming, meditation}?

In the cases where there is a relict but smaller population, natural selection will likely have favored certain kinds of individuals, however there are so many variables it could be more than one "Kind", and there's no knowing what characteristics would be favored. So, in that sense it's evolutionary. However, the determining factors of whether there will be a relict population is the diversity and robustness of the ecosystem, and to a much lesser degree the adaptability of the species in question.

Dr. Leper taught us that any effort has a rhythm, multiple rhythms, actually. The trick is recognizing the periodicity, catching the really long ones and keeping focused on the fact that it’s a process, and a necessary one to boot.

He called the down periods a retrospective, an appropriate term considering he was presenting a two-semester graduate level fine arts course. Years later I realized he was teaching what’s known formally as General Systems Analysis.

We share the general feeling that some sort of transition is afoot. But as Dr. Leper repeatedly showed, you can’t short circuit the process. A journey is a journey; all we can do is hold on and go with the ride.

If it’s any comfort, the retrospective is where the real learning happens. The productive periods are where we figure out what it was we learned, and how to express it.

Then the whole thing starts all over again…

Between some of the new discoveries (really newly accepted theories that have been banging around a while) suggesting that neurons firing in synchronicity (and thus producing brain waves) are far more important to brain function than previously thought, and the experimentally demonstrable fact that certain aspects of brian function both within and between hemispheres interfere with each other, it's looking like a pretty solid observation.

In the experiments they use intracranial magnetic stimulation to overstimulate and thus 'shut down' (due to overstimulation) targeted regions of the surface of the brain, down to about a centimeter or so of depth. They've shown when they do this that other areas of the brain gain an observable performance increase. For example by artificially damping down activity in the right visual field they increase response and acuity in the right visual field markedly, and vice versa.

I'm not entirely sure why I brought this up, but there was a reason, I promise. :-)

OK: Yeah, we have a little on this. It’s sure to be related to the ‘resonances’ that pop up when tracking through into deeper structures from the visual vortex; ask Barbyma about that.

When we extended Albus’ theoretical models, we arrived at a model that expects exactly this sort of activity, essentially a dynamic process caught in the act of temporarily converging on a quasi-stable metastate. Interference is an obvious feature of such a process; there have to be rules so somebody can win, or it’s not going to be very useful.

So it doesn’t surprise us to see it exists, but that’s about as much as we can contribute. Other than the typically arrogant fifteen-or-twenty-year-long assumption that such activity obviously must be there, of course…

I was a huge Asimov fan at one point, I became obsessed with his idea/vision of the collective consciousness Gia (not sure on spelling). I came to realize that we identify patterns / relationships between objects and give them variables (usually based on there function). All it takes is for us to recognize a relationship and hocus pocus it comes into existence as a collective ‘whole’. A tree is only a tree because we sit at the proper perspective to see its individual parts acting as a whole.

What does a Neuron know of a human? - not a lot

I imagine a human as an individual can't give much more depth to the collective RRReality of our race or our universe.

I notice that the recent round of Nobel announcements has (for the moment) revived discussion of what’s going on at the edge of the Universe. It’s expanding, but by definition not into anything. Finite but unbounded, as they say, and nothing seems to explode serious heads as fast as that phrase.

At the edge of the 2.7K heat wave running away as fast as it can, RRReality is quite literally being created.

There is no piece of the Universe there before it gets there. If we’re talking about how many places we can visit at any given moment, it’s a real expansion (or RRReal expansion, for those in a punny mood).

So new places to visit arise with every passing moment, but in terms of where those places come from, well, they’re created on the spot, just quickly enough to give the Big Blast a place to expand and cool a little bit more. It’s another dead heat, or perhaps a view of the same one through the wrong end of the telescope.

But you’re right: the contribution of single humans is long past, if indeed it ever existed. It’s all about what happens when we meet, in isolation, in a truly common place…

Well, sure, as far as we can tell. That’s by definition. The apparently interesting question is whether anything’s there before we get to it.

But that’s a fooler, which is why trying to learn to not ask that question is the subject of many a koan.

The solution, of course, is to learn to see how all questions are out of order. Then the problem of not asking whether anything exists before we observe it disappears, because all questions disappear.

The trick is, the problem of the Universe isn’t really the problem; we are, or how we get to wherever we seem to be running. Or maybe the Universe is the problem, in which case we aren’t. It doesn’t matter which, ‘cause underneath they’re both the same thing.

But you can’t attack it both ways at the same time. In the end, what’s important is to understand it doesn’t matter, because we’ll never be able to recognize what the truth is even if we could see it. When it comes to this stuff, we’re all blind, also by definition.

Besides, our blindness is atypical; we can already see everything that’s important, even though we can never see that it’s important. But seeing and knowing aren’t the same thing, and there doesn’t seem to be much we can’t know, in theory.

In theory, we can know something about what’s outside RRReality. Not much, but something, and that seems important, too. (Talk about a good subject for a koan, eh?)

... this model of the mind as a colony of models fighting for supremacy (cf. E-boy's comment on horizontal (orthologous context) and vertical (organismic context) gene trees) would ensure that logical models which are better able to model rrreality ~survive~.
The fact that the underlying mechanism only has one trick, to seek the best fit possible, will continuously cause the better model to emerge until it does take over. All we need to assume is that the thing being modeled is reasonably stable over some small time, and more complex than current models allow for.

RRRealty is a natural fit to those requirements, so that’s what we chase.

It’s similar to a question we’ve discussed before: What will language be like?

The answers are identical, and we’re back to koans, or maybe you can’t get there from here in that old bus.

If we’re thinking about language, we’ve already limited our perception too much to see the truth. Kay and I have had some experiences that literally transcend language, significant and unmistakable, with independently verified results.

Language was the farthest thing from our minds when we out there, and I wouldn’t know how to begin to describe the nature of the communication we experienced. It’s not that it was so dramatically different, because it really wasn’t; instead, there was no communication, only something you might lamely call shared being.

I think unknowable isn’t really going to go away; by definition, it has to remain so. Assume that to start, then add knowing more than was ever before possible, and we’re back to koans again…

What I do know about the unknowable is this: it doesn’t seem like anything unnatural or extraordinary, although it clearly is, and it’s a kick, to boot. (grins…)

The problem with black holes is seein’m, y’know? And the problem with seein’m is that it’s going to mean using a trick of some sort, a way of cheating: they’re really perfectly black, as in plain noseeum by definition, after all.

So now the problem is learning to be confident that the trick works, covers all the bases, and that can be a bear, especially after tens of thousands of years of knowing nothing works, by definition.

Judging by personal experience, I’d say it takes about ten years or so, working without any outside help. Get a little club going, and I’ll bet that drops to a few months.

This is going to go away a lot faster than we used to think. We’re seeing stuff happen now that wouldn’t have been possible two years ago, and we’ve yet to try to speak about it outside the forums. Hammer’s a preacher now, and you can’t blame us for that.

It should be that way. Arguably, the rodent models its universe in terms of olfactory inputs. (That can’t be an original observation, given the history of experiments on rats.)

We couldn’t do the same, simply because there isn’t enough bandwidth in the channel and little differentiation of detail about the world we want to model. So what we see is a complex hierarchical interaction of structures growing from the visual systems, the aural channels, and the physical models in the cerebellum.

All those channels are bandwidth limited in their connection to the outside world, too, although not as severely. There’s not much of a bandwidth limit internally, though, so that’s where the entire reality winds up existing, where communication can take place without being fettered.

The universe I’m typing this in is entirely internal, a solitary invention of my own neural structures. The fact that my internal reality mimics external activity leading to other individuals eventually reading these words on an internal screen of their own making is of no consequence, and it isn’t even possible to prove such circumstance actually exists.

It is possible to resolve the uncertainty that brings: every situation has exactly one consistent moral and logical view that moots the problem, exist – not exist. We choose to act arbitrarily, as true masters of the universe, and the choice is to act as if an external reality actually does exist, complete with others and consequences of our actions.

If it doesn’t, and we rule a solitary illusory reality, well, it’s our choice then, isn’t it?

And if it does, and others exist in an external reality in the way we perceive, then we’ve covered our butts, and done the right thing.

We are all so steeped in this perspective that we lose sight of it, but its development was necessary for the successful completion of the last speciation event. Early H. sapiens had to trust that the external world wouldn’t disappear when s/he left it to descend into an internal reality.

Now we’re on the cusp of rediscovering the principle, as a conscious decision to act in the best interests of others as well as ourselves, and regardless of the impossibility of proving such an act truly matters.

Despite the BS surrounding Carlos Castaneda’s writing, there were some gems scattered about that shouldn’t be dismissed. This one is there, too: he called it ‘controlled folly’, arbitrarily acting whole-heartedly as if something matters to you personally.


We’ve long struggled with how to interpret the direction we’re taking as a species. In some technical aspects, we’re breaking back out, moving back into internal experiential spaces that were abandoned when we originally descended into our interior universe. Back to the garden, in the most literal sense, a return to a simpler universe.

But in a different way we’re clearly moving deeper, into an even more highly structured interior world. This might seem contradictory, but the goal has never been isolation, despite its seeming utility to unscrupulous characters through the ages.

We are reclaiming those lost experiential spaces, that we still share with our less highly evolved brethren and sistren. But going deeper into an even more complex model of reality holds the promise that we’ll all finally meet there, deep in the patterns we weave together independently.

We believe the real prize can only be found by simultaneously expanding our awareness to claim what was once ours, while diving deeper still in a kind of mad Zen rush, going so far in that it finally becomes out, and rrreality and RRReality merge.

And it all starts by looking for just one other person, really looking, and refusing to accept the possibility of failure.
