View Full Version : Pro Wrestling: Love It or Hate It?? suupanova 12-02-03, 12:47 AM Hi everyone, just curious to know if anybody else on these forums is interested in wrestling, like i am? I know somebody out there has at least heard of the WWE :D waywardclam 12-02-03, 02:47 AM I'm a wrestling fan from way back, only follow it occasionally now... Mick Foley is da Man! :D :D :D Gotta say I like the Hurricane too... And on the subject of the Divas... Lita's the one I like :D Sc@tterBr@in_UK 12-02-03, 03:50 AM Well just like many sports I just don't *get* it I'm afraid. Nothing against it though :D b92623 12-02-03, 05:59 AM Hi people!I like many sports and wrestling is 1 of the best.It offers potential viewers 2 things.Comedy entertainment + wrestling.I have watched it from 8yrs old.I'm now 18 and I'm still as interested as I was when I first watched it.I like Edge,Kidman,Mysterio,Kurt Angle,Jamie Noble,Christine,Jericho + loads mor but I can't remeber.I hate Kane (the pain) and I cant stand Ric Flair.I laugh at him everytime he gets angry. He goes red like a beetroot and starts tearing his clothes off like a stripper. He doesn't know how embarrasing he is.From B92623 healthwiz 12-02-03, 10:04 AM I actually can't stand it. It just wreeks in my humble opinion, of the use of violence, and it glorifies violent conflict resolution, as well as glorifying unethical dishonest tactics in the sports environment. I don't see the wrestling as being real wrestling, it is just show biz, they guy who wins is the guy who the producer scripted to win, and I don't see why people like it so much. I would not expose my children to it because I don't teach violence to them. I do teach them Martial Arts, but I see that as a real sport and something that can be used responsibly, thta can have benefits in concentration, discipline, confidence and self esteem. I play around with my children when they want to wrestle and pretend they are martial artists, so I don't deny some fun in that. I am real turned off, though, by the machismo, violent, dishonest, unethical and fake aspects of TV wrestling. What behavior and lessons is it promoting. Aren't sports suppose to promote good citizenship? waywardclam 12-02-03, 11:18 AM You have some valid cricitisms of wrestling there... I do watch wrestling with my son (11) because he absolutely loves it, and I don't want to take that away from him. I also enjoy it myself so it is one of the few things we can both meet on, if you see what I mean... It does glorify violence... but I wouldn't say it glorifies cheating and lying. My son always roots for the "good guy", the vigilante, the one getting screwed over by the bad guy. And I always explain to him the reality behind the situation... what is real and what is fake, what moves NOT to ever try on his friends because they will get someone killed... I have read him two wrestling biographies (Hardy Boyz, and parts of Mick Foley's books) and brought him to see Bret Hart when he came to town. My wife and I refer to WWE as "Soaps on Steroids", because that's what it is IMHO. But as long as you realize it is fluff entertainment and nothing more than that, you can enjoy it on that level IMHO. Oh yeah, gotta love that Mysterio as well. The signs the fans come up with are often the most entertaining part of the entire program... "Wine Me, Dine Me, 619 Me" "Austin 3/16ths" "Val Venis Fears Tape Measures" hehehe :D ferrette1976 12-02-03, 11:40 AM I think that saying “I can’t stand it” is coming on a little strong. Mostly, I just think pro-wrestling is lame. We all know that the outcomes are pre-determined. I’ve heard many people describe pro-wrestling as “soap operas for men”. Well, I hate soaps. So I guess it’s no surprise that I would dislike the “male” version of the soap opera. missing_cues 12-02-03, 12:04 PM First off, Ferrette...love your signature....A lOT!!!!! (I laugh a little everytime I read it). Anyway, when I was a kid, I watched all kinds of violent shows. I am a pacifist. I do not fight myself and do not engage in violent behaviour. I still watch violent movies. I watched violent cartoons as a child. I will never see violence as a way to resolve conflicts but I have been esxposed to violence quite a bit. I have fired a rifle once...shot a popcan with it...never wanted to pick up a gun again. I dont like wrestling anymore because it has become very lame. I miss roddy piper (I know he's backnow from time to time, but its just not the same). In fact, I remember when we were kids, my friend and I would watch the hulk-hogan cartoon and they had good messages in the cartoon back then...and even in the wrestling sometimes...I dont see that anymore...its all about the money now and there is no more positive messages...healthwiz dos have some valid concerns, but my concern is that if you dont teach kids about the crap thats out there they are not going to know what to do with it when they come face to face with it...you can watch TV shows without being influenced...media literacy is very important this day and age...and I dont mean going to the nearest child psycholgy magazine and reading what they say about it....actually talk to kids about what they are thinking.... ferrette1976 12-02-03, 12:17 PM Thanks, missing_cues! I cannot take credit for that signature though. I got it from a person on another forum. I asked her where she got it from, and she couldn't remember! So it's a mystery . . . but still hilarious!!! :D When it comes to violence on television, I think parents have to know their kids. Some kids are more influenced by it than others. So I wouldn't think that a parent who lets their kid watch WWE is a bad parent either. Hey, I grew up on Bugs Bunny - I don't think it affected me negatively! But, like I said before – I just don’t care about WWE one way or another. I don’t get why people find it so entertaining. But, then again, some people might not find Bugs Bunny entertaining either! suupanova 12-02-03, 12:18 PM Well I'm one of those people who are like...really, really into it. Beyond what you see in WWE. I occasionally watch NWA-TNA(which is like an alternative, something like WCW use to be) & sometimes the independent feds. I'll always watch because i've grown up with it pretty much my whole life. But I admit the WWE has been disappointing as of late. It's become so predictable over the years & it's sad that they have to rely so much on "T & A" to get attention. What happened to the good ol' years when wrestling was actually potrayed as a "sport" & now it's an entertainment show with wrestling in it. The storylines are at times controversial but WWE's idea of that is to make humor of certain things that go on in this world. Would I want my kids to watch?? I don't have any right now, but i wouldn't mind them watching. Just teach them from an early age that what they do on tv is for "entertainment", do not try imitating what they do, or take anything they say seriously. Yes, everything is predetermined. No question about it....but the conditioning is just as intense as any other sport, & the injuries, dedication, all the pain is definately real. As far as WWE goes, i don't pay attention to good guy/bad guy anymore. If I like somebody i'll cheer for them regardless. Current wrestlers i like, all of Evolution(except HHH), Jericho, RVD, Booker T, Kane(his new gimmick works for him, even though i prefer the old one), most of the Smackdown roster, & of course Bill Goldberg. All time favorite would have to be The Undertaker...(spoiler) he's suppose to be going back to his deadman gimmick next year & I agree with waywardclam, the signs are pretty hilarious at times. "Saxon=Joke Account" comes to mind lol. healthwiz 12-02-03, 03:53 PM Hey for those who love it, go for it. If I had a son, who knows? He might want me to bond with him over some big time wrestling, and I don't think I would force him to go to the ballet instead. There are some good points about it being entertainment only. I did grow up on all the same tv the rest of my gen did, the violent stuff. I am pretty pacifist.. However, I think under it all, there were some lessons basicaly saying that violence could be resorted to, that violence is entertaining and that it is cool. Thats one reason why cigarettes are banned from TV, to quit sending the message it is cool. On the other hand, I don't want to live in a country of cencorship, so I would not support banning violence from entertainment. I do like violent movies, love to see action thrillers and there is always an excellent fight sequence. However, philosophically, I feel it is time we stop treating violence as entertainment. It has been entertainment for thousands of years, its not something new. I think its time for us to start finding a different modus of laughter. I still don't understand why people - me included - find it funny when someone else gets hurt. Just look at America's funniest videos - I'm appalled that the one's voted funniest are often ones that depict some painful stuff. Is it some kind of twisted survivial lesson we have somehow learned as we have evolved - to laugh at the painful? Or is it masochistic pleasure enjoyed by the populace that is labeled entertainment? I don't pretend to know the answers, but I do have the questions. I question whether it is healthy to teach children to laugh at violence. But don't take me to be judging others. If its fun for someone to watch it, and they can enjoy some time with a friend or a son, and do some manly bonding (or womanly bonding - not to be totally chauvinist), well hey - go to it. :) Jonathan FlakeyGirl 12-02-03, 05:20 PM I used to be pretty into it about 20 years ago. Anybody remember Kamala the Ugandan Warrior....how awful was that? Rick Flair is ok....my brother went as him for halloween one year. joanrdtobe 12-02-03, 05:43 PM Wrestling......I don't like it....It scares me.....I don't like to see people getting hurt.....Or people physically hurting each other -- on purpose, yet? BUT I realize for many of you -- it is a form of entertainment -- and for the wrestlers themselves -- well it's a sport for them -- and the way they make a living -- and of course it's their choice to be wrestlers....so enjoy......:) But as for me -- when I see it on TV as I'm channel surfing, I switch the station....:( waywardclam 12-02-03, 05:44 PM I remember Kamala... hehehe :D :D :D suupanova 12-03-03, 12:51 AM Kamala was garbage :D Career was pretty much over when a young Undertaker handed him his rear end...twice lol. I myself wouldn't mind being a wrestler, except these days "Mic Skills" are a must & i just don't have those :( It's like now the mic skills are more important than the wrestling ability. FlakeyGirl 12-03-03, 10:10 AM All I know is that I thoroughly enjoyed his schtick...the drums, the cermonial face/body paint, the whole open. If memory serves, there was also a translator needed. As an aside, that wrestling program had some pretty cheesy local sponsorship. I remember one ad for a jewelry store in which a washed up famous boxer was modeling big diamond earrings on his cauliflower ears. The tagline was, "If I.W. Marks can make these ears look pretty, think what he can do for hers." suupanova 12-03-03, 02:29 PM does anybody remember any WCW wrestlers? Like Sting, Ric Flair, the NWO, etc... FlakeyGirl 12-03-03, 02:37 PM I said Ric Flair, with the hair. suupanova 12-03-03, 04:05 PM Well he's wrestled in both WWE & WCW and at the moment, i thought you were refering to his time in WWE. Sorry FlakeyGirl 12-03-03, 04:50 PM To be honest, I don't know the difference. FlakeyGirl 12-03-03, 05:11 PM WOOOOO! suupanova 12-04-03, 12:53 PM i'll try to sum up this long story. WWE(WWF at the time) is New York based, WCW was in Atlanta. They were the 2big names in pro wrestling & during the 90's they went head to head and tried to outdo each other...this creating the "Monday Night Wars" Monday Night RAW & Monday Nitro. In 2001, i think, WWE was so far ahead of WCW that it was put out of buisness. But the owner of WWE bought the rights to WCW at the last minute so that's how those two companies merged. There was really no difference between WWE & WCW, except WCW was more of a family oriented program...which was good if you had kids who were into wrestling. But that didn't work out too well because "everyone" was sold to WWE, at the time & to this day they were attracting people with "T&A", more violence, and more mature storylines. Hope that answers your question :) FlakeyGirl 12-04-03, 02:43 PM Gotcha. Wheel1975 12-13-03, 12:44 PM Originally posted by healthwiz I don't see the wrestling as being real wrestling, it is just show biz, they guy who wins is the guy who the producer scripted to win, and I don't see why people like it so much. Aren't sports suppose to promote good citizenship? like you said... it is not a sport. : ) suupanova 12-13-03, 07:11 PM well it may not be a "sport" in the sense that there is real, legitamite competition...but it's not like script writers just choose who's on top & who's not popular. We all know it's "fake" but fans no longer look at it that way. It's just entertainment...no different than watching soap operas or movies. But if you want REAL wrestling then try watching the Japanese federations...where it's all taken much more seriously. Wrestlers do compete for being #1 but it's more "backstage politics" than anything else. Younger wrestlers have to pay their dues and therefore are more likely to lose, more experienced wrestlers are more likely to get things in their favor. & sometimes a more experienced wrestler will purposely lose in order to help make the newer wrestler gain popularity. But like i said before, the dedication/ conditioning/ discipline/ training it takes to go out there week after week & "entertain"(not counting the tons of non-televised events) is unlike any other real sport(except maybe the martial arts...which isn't a sport either, but an form of art). People do get hurt, the injuries are real (you tell me you get smacked with a chair & it won't hurt). Who in their right mind would be willing to put their body on the line every single night...just to entertain us? That my friends, is dedication. Andi 12-29-03, 07:47 PM Ok, I'll admit, I'm a healthy woman that enjoys looking at a sweaty half naked man, my favorite fantasy use to be The Super Fly, Jimmy Zooka…oh my, but despite the testosterone filled exhibitions, I think true wrestling is a bit odd, too much man on man touching for my comfort, and the staged contests are mere laugh out loud riots. I'm too old for the drama and theatrics. I get enough of that with two teenagers. "Professional" wrestling I'll pass but bully for you that like it. ScatteredOne 12-31-03, 09:20 AM Not a fan.. have never been a fan.. can honestly say I'll never be a fan!! Spirit 01-02-04, 12:11 AM Pro-wrestling...lmbo..now there's an oxymoron if I ever heard of one. I guess if that is what constitute as wrestling now days, then we really do need a Madam President. :D I will admit however that back in the day when the Von Erich's were wrestling along with ol' Hulk Hogan & Andrea the Giant. Although, it was quite flamboyant even then. It was a lot more fun to watch then it is today. FlakeyGirl 01-03-04, 02:01 PM ROLLMAO, I had the biggest crush on Kerry von Erich. I totally forgot about him till now. |
