I like being able to type the notes and be able to go back and reorganize them. plus if you have a tablet PC (My next major purchase) you can write on the screen and draw diagrams. you can also use a mic and record lectures and it links it to the text as you type

I really need some sort of electronic lab-book/notebook. So far, I'm using an MS Word file and I'm making a search-able diary of ideas and other important info. But for scribbling (diagrams, equations, etc), that obviously won't work... so I'm going to need something else soon.

A Tablet PC is the perfect solution, but it's out of my price range right now…
I was trying to figure out if I could do this with a PDA.

Handheld computers, from what I gathered come in 2 types: Pocket PC (PPC) and a Palm. PPCs run Windows Mobile and Palms run Palm OS, for their operating systems. See http://www.spotted-dog-design.com/pocketpc/software.html (http://www.spotted-dog-design.com/pocketpc/software.html) for more info

I'm considering purchasing a Dell Axim X30, which is a PPC.

Regarding note taking programs, from what I gathered about MS OneNote: http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/default.mspx) ,
it's made mostly for tablet PC's but there is a service pack available that will allow at least some sort of scribbling on a PPC, which you can then upload to your PC and organize, search, etc. The only catch is that you can't go the other way and download your notes to your PPC...yet. More extensive software is still in the making, and MicroSoft appears to be really slow to provide this service for PPC users.

Another program like this that looks pretty good is EverNote (free beta version): http://www.evernote.com/en/ (http://www.evernote.com/en/)
But it also needs to be developed further to work well with PPCs.

I might consider using one of these programs (OneNote or EverNote) and use it on the assumption that it'll be updated in the future, to use it with my PPC when I got one. However, both require Windows 2000/XP, which I don't have on my home PC…and I don't have computer in my research lab yet…

I also found some journaling software called Journal Pro: http://www.dsrtech.net/ (http://www.dsrtech.net/) that looks pretty good. It's compatible with both PCs and PPCs, but I don't think you can scribble in it…

Ok, well that's my 50 cents...let me know if you have any other input or ideas regarding this. Also please let me know what are your opinions on these programs

Thanks,
