Hi everyone. I have been very helpfully re-directed here after a slightly panicked post somewhere else. I've been given a bottle of Dexamphetamine and some written info from the pharmacist. This is my medical care of ADD! At least i think i have ADD (???) No-one has come out and said it. My GP sent me to a phychologist when i told him i thought i might have it, (after he finished rolling his eyes). Saw Phychologist for brief time. He wrote prescription and i started meds on Thursday - 3 a day, 15mg all up. The only thing i know about ADD is what i've read from library books. I have no idea what i am supposed to be expecting from these tablets. I haven't been able to get a good nights sleep since i started taking them. I live in a small country town and there is no decent counselling, let alone anyone who specialises in ADD or anything of that kind. We have one visiting phychiatrist. I have depression and am pretty shut down at the moment and feeling very victim-y. I'm not sure if this is the way 'treatment' is supposed to go and how i'm supposed to know if these pills are helping me or not, so any advice would be good. Ta.

Your doctor is an idiot if they havn't explained ANYTHING to you.

The pills will take a little while to get used to, not being able to sleep and loss of appitite are quite normal.

The pills shold make you concentrait better on things. You cant be too bad if you can acutally get yourself TO a library & read about it. There is no way I'd do that without pills.

As for the sleep-less nights, try and not take the pills ater 5pm. The doctor should have discussed wtih you when to take the pills. I don't take dexi's so I can't comment.

Is that normal for Dex? I dunno, my Concerta always made me feel so drowsy at first, and I personally sleep better when medicated.

Yeah

i dont know, ritalin used to keep me awake in the early days, and im guessing dexi's probably do the same, being the older style of drug.

Hi Jasmine
my daughter has been diagnosed ADHD, I cant offer any advice to you other than keep posting here as you will certainly feel you have ppl who understand you and can offer some gr8 non professional advice. As for taking meds. all I can say is I've been taking anti-depressants not for ADHD (tho in hindsight I guess I cld say I am undiagnosed adult wth ADHD) so having a caring GP to help with dosage of meds has been helpful for me. Good luck. You will get through this patch and there is light @ the end of the tunnel you probably may not be able to see it but it is there.

Oh, I could have sworn AD/HD was excepted here. My shrink never rolled their eyes they were the one who suggested I had it. Same with my father. I didn't know that it was different elsewhere. Brisbane is where I am. I think Ritalin might be better cause it is also an anti depressent or something like that. Ask Iars he knows that sorta thing. Good luck.
