Hello everyone!:p

Please tell me what you think, I am really quite curious to hear the opinion of others on this subject. I am a married, 32 year old mother of two, diagnosed with ADHD combined type/severe impulsivity. Since the birth of our 10 year old son, we have been struggling with the fact that I, have absolutely no sexual desire. Over the past ten years I have sought the help of psychologist, gynecologist, my regular obgyn, whom I should add, specializes in womens health; as well as numerous other doctors and specialists, in leau of my search for an answer. I began taking medication for ADHD 3 months ago, and I have experienced no change in productivity, functioning, cognition, etc. I know my estrogen levels are low and, that can hinder my response to the meds, that being said, if I'm not mistaken, sexual desire is controlled by the frontal lobe as well, which causes me to ask, are HSDD and ADHD connected?

First, you need to explain what HSDD is. If you mean a lack of sexual desire, no, I highly doubt that there is much correlation between ADHD and lack of sexual desire, if only because studies have shown that people with ADHD have a higher likelyhood of teenage pregnancy, which last I checked tends to involve sexual intercourse (although as I understand it, many people object to teaching that fact to teenagers, but that's another story).

However, I have heard anecdotal reports from some women that PMS and menopause and other hormonal issues tend to make ADHD worse.

Being either hypo or hyper active in that department as well. It's not in all, but can be.

Thanks for your reply. I appologize for failing to name the disorder, (HSDD) Hypoactive sexual desire disorder, in full. I guess the direction in which I was headed with that question was more on the connection of estrogen to both hypoactivity/hyposexuality. With regard to teenage girls and pregnancy, I would venture to guess that they are acting in more of an impulsive manner rather than simply heightened sexual desire. Furthermore, most teenage girls do not normally suffer from a depleted estrogen supply, which from what I understand and, please correct me if I'm wrong, is a major cause for the worsening of ADHD symptoms in women. Some of which include daytime fatigue, poor concentration, lack of sexual desire, irritability, etc. many of the same symptoms suffered in ADHD w/out hyperactivity. Buspirone has been used, in some cases for treating HSDD. While norepinephrine and dopamine are largely believed to be the major chemical deficiancies in ADHD, there are those who are beginning to question whether or not seratonin could play a larger part than once believed.
