View Full Version : Needing a little boost?
Well from my other thread some of you may know that I am suddenly not feeling so great on Adderall (possibly Toxicity on taking 20mg XR everyday for the past six weeks).
Well I still need to function both at my day job, and my second job (we run an Office cleaning business - but the next few months I will be filling in for someone who quit at a medium sized office (1-2 hrs two nights a week and 1 weekend day). So I've been feeling the need for a little boost to keep me going. I drink coffee, but honestly after 1 16.oz cup I don't feel like drinking anymore. Plus the milk and/or half & half seem to make me feel blah.
Being Desperate I purchased an energy drink today. It's called NOS. It's 16 FL OZ by the "High Performance Beverage Co.". It has taken away my chronic tired feeling right now, although I am worried about a possible crash.
Is it ok for me to drink this for a few days, until I can figure out what to do with my Adderall Dosage?
Here are some of the ?Nutrients? in it:
Taurine 1000mg
D-Ribose 250mg
L-Carnitine 200mg
Inositol 100mg
Panax Ginseng 50mg
it also has Caffeine and High Fructose Corn Sysrup in it. The dirnk hasn' caused me to have the Caffeine shales or anything.
I know this stuff can't be great for you, but at least I am getting work done without feeling so tired.
Is this drink going to cause more ADD problems (I don't have hyperactivity)? Will any of these ingredients cause adverse side effects to my Adderall medication and or nervous systme?
I'm looking to stay alert and awake not give myself a Heart Attack.
jennyjay 09-28-06, 01:44 PM I am a huge energy drink fan, my favorite is Diet Rockstar, it has similar ingrediants. At mt last psyciatrist visit, I walked in with a big 16 ouncer can of the stuff and he said "can I see that..." and then he read the ingrediants. I got in trouble for drinkin them, he said "you got to be carefull with this stuff.." . I know that some of the ingrediants in energy drinks can actually make adderall less effective! So, I would talk to you doctor about getting some regular immediant release adderall for in the evening while you are doing the 2 job thing. I am actually working 2 jobs myself and went from 60 mg of regular adderall to 80 (40 mg in the morning, 20 at like 1 pm, then another 20 at 5pm).
I hope this info helps!

if you're truly worried about possible "toxicity" from your adderall, then it probably isn't such a grand idea to be adding massive amounts of caffine and who-knows-what-else into the mix. afterall, amphetamine "toxicity" generally is the result of a catacholamine (particuarly epinephrine and norephinephrine acting on your cardiovascular system) overload.... and both amphetmaines and caffine work by stimulating the release of catacholamines.
as for the herbal stuff in the energy drinks interfering with the adderall, that's hard to know for sure either way (which is the problem). a lot of "herbal" medicines are actually metabolized through the exact same pathways as meds like adderall (and most other meds, actually). to your living it doesn't matter if it was made in a factory or a vegetable. one of two things happens a lot with herbal meds. 1) the herbal med uses the same metabolism pathway was the prescription you're taking; this induces the pathway and causes your meds to be more quickly eliminated from your system (thereby decreasing the effectiveness). 2) sometimes the herbal med is metabolized through a separate, competing pathway. this functionally stops up the metabolic pathway for your prescription causing slower metabolism and increased drug levels.
the problem is that compounds sold as dietary aids don't have to undergoe screening and study to determine stuff like this, so there's not really a way to know what's going on. this is compounded by the fact that most "xenobiotics" (substances foreign to the body) are metabolised by this pathway and will give you one of the two interactions listed above. i actually did research on this topic in undergrad and the potential for drug/herb or drug/supplement interaction is enormous. it seemed like everytime we look to see if something interacts, it did in a way we never expected.
the bottom line is you gotta talk to your doc, especially since you're not feeling great.
good luck,
sim
swivelhead 09-28-06, 03:51 PM like Jenny, i was a HUGE fan of diet rockstar. I stopped drinking 'em when i started Adderall XR this past monday. I still have two in my fridge just screaming at me, but i'm wary of mixing 'em.
if you're not taking your meds, i don't see much of a problem, though i'm comfortable in admitting i know ****e about the issue. All i can say is i'd personally give it a shot as long as i was off the meds. Taurine (along with the other ingredients) can't possibly approach the intensity of amphetamine...
i dunno, listen to simbryo and jenny... they sound like they know what they're talkin' about ;)
I've never been an energy drink fan until lately when a buddy of mine gave me one to try out that I have started to enjoy very much. It is called "XS," and I get the "rootbeer blast" flavor. I am not sure how good the other flavors are, but this one taste like a really good rootbeer. Believe it or not it is caffiene free, and sugar free. The energy that this stuff provides comes from the use of potent B vitamins, mostly B12. The B vitamins that are used in it are from natural plant extracts, and have a high bioavailabilty.
The down side is that it is somewhat expensive at a little over $2.00 a can, and I also do not like the fact that it has to be bought from a direct distributor. I am not sure what the companies name is that makes them, but they operate like Amway. I have never been fond of those kind of companies due to the way they pressure people into joining them, but I must say that this company has quite a unique product, and it taste great.
They also sell versions of this energy drink with caffiene, but I believe that those are also sugar free like the caffiene free version that I got. I ordered a case of them (12 cans) about a week ago, and due to how pricey they are I save them for boring lectures, or test. So far I am impressed, but I think the next time I order some I am going to try out the version that has the caffiene just so I can compare the two.
