Hello,
My name is Shari....I have three daughters one adult daughter and two that are still at home. Nyssa is 13 years old....Michaela is 8 years old and is diagnoised ADHD with violent tendencies, she is on 8 MG of Concerta and doing really well on it.
I have been in denile because I didn't start medicating her till this past Monday(7/9/02),and I have noticed a big change in her already.
My husband doesn't like her on meds and doesn't believe in ADHD...so this has been a sore spot in our marriage, and we will stay strong and get though this.
We homeschool, because I don't believe that Michaela needs to be in Learning Disable classes which in this city they will put her in the class.:(
Thank you,
Welcome to the community Shari!
My parents also did not believe in medicating children and refused to put me on Ritalin when I was younger. In the last few years my father has started taking Ritalin his self and the results have been noticeable to all. He went through college and graduate school without it, basically shutting himself in rooms to focus on his work.
ADD/ADHD is no joke.. It shouldn't be used as an excuse not to succeed but it's a fact.
Do you think your children get ADD/ADHD from him or you?

David,
I know they get it(but it isn't hereditary),from me...I have (undiagnois)ADHD,but in my day it was called laziness, and I always have to be on the go. It drives me nuts not to be doing something.
My husband is just that way..

Hi Shari and welcome to the forum.
I just wanted to say I commend you for getting your daughter the help she needs/deserves (meds) even though your husband doesn't agree.
My ex-husband doesn't believe in ADHD and my daughter knows this. But she knows she can always count on mommy to take care of her in any capacity.
Your daughter knows this too!
Good for you, I know it's not easy.

Laurie,
It may not be easy, but it is worth it. My husband doesn't fight me on this....because I tried to handle it without medication(the natural diets, and other ways).

I just have to wonder why people are so dead set against ADHD? :( My hubby won't flat out tell me that he's against it but he gives me helpful hints and advice and suggestions as to how I can help myself without using medication. Because he really is afraid of me always being on medication, "are you gonna have to be on perscriptions for the rest of your life?!". And every time our dd does something that is so ADHD he thinks she's being defiant and I tell him  over and over that it's cause she's ADHD give her a break! I do think that God brings people like him and myself together for him to learn more tolerance and me to be more understanding of untolerant people. So, anyway, what exactly do you do with nutrition to help your daughter? I'm just curious cause I've tried to eliminate most bad things from our diet but it wouldn't hurt to know what you do. Thanks, Anne
