View Full Version : The fruit juice thing
PinkPanther_04 10-03-06, 02:07 PM I just started taking Adderall IR last Thursday (10mg three times a day). I was reading about the effects of fruit juice and Vitamin C on absorption of Adderall, and was wondering what's the best thing to do about this? I usually drink orange juice with breakfast in the mornings, and haven't done that since I started taking it. But that sucks, so I was wondering whether it would be better to drink juice then wait a while and take the Adderall, or to take the Adderall and then wait a while and drink juice. And how long would I need to wait?
Or can I just take a couple of Tums before I drink juice? It seems like that would fix the problem.
Any ideas?
Try some OJ in the morning, maybe it will not effect you. Dont know unless you try.
Per the prescription info any acidic environment will reduce the amount of adderall that gets absorbed. The more basic your stomach is the more that gets absorbed. Anything with an acid in it (OJ, Soda) will reduce the amount of adderall. By making your stomach more of a basic environment (via antiacid such as Tums, Pepcid, etc..) will allow your body to take in more.

Thanks for the info. I honestly didn't know this, and I always started off the morning with OJ. In fact, I would usually take Adderall with OJ. I opted for water instead this morning, and so far I would say that I feel better. Whether or not it's in my mind will have to be seen, but I will try to avoid acidic foods.
Does Tomato Sauce count as being acidic? Any other foods, drinks that I should limit?
I wouldn't worry too much about not eating Tomato sauce. I am a diet pepsi addict so I've been trying to work my soda around my dosage schedule. When I woke up this morning I had a glass of soda then about an hour later took a pepcid (antacid), then waited about an hour to take my first dose of adderall XR.
Man, what a difference the antacid makes!

Limit taking it with juices, sodas, etc for best results. Take it with water or something like that. Also, beware of bases like milk, antacid tabs etc as these will INCREASE absorption, and itll hit u harder/faster (not always good tho).
PinkPanther_04 10-04-06, 04:21 PM Thanks for the input, everyone. I talked to my psych this afternoon and she said to just wait an hour after taking it before I eat anything or drink any juice or anything like that. I wish she'd have gone over more of this stuff when she first prescribed it, but at least I know now.
Is using an antacid a temporary fix? Or is it possible that by using an antacid I can prevent having to up my dosage for at least a good length of time (months/years)? I know everyone is different.
I just want to know if for the people who feel that the antacid made a difference for them - did it (antacids) continue to make a difference and for how long?
thanks Ejom

Antacids do make a noticible difference. However, in my experiences and from many i've heard, it is not as pleasurable as just taking it regularly. It seems to skeeve me out a little more (worse symptoms and some speediness which is minimal or normal when taken normally). It hits you kind of like if you've ever snorted/sublingually taken an instant, just not in <3 minutes heh. IIRC, it hit me in about 10-15 mins maybe? Over that time span I think it kicked up. And it was a bit more powerful but again not enjoyably so, and I definitely couldn't substitute it for increasing my dose (unless i took upwards of 80-100mg that day instead of just my 40mg-60mg "prescribed" dosage, in which you start feeling a little worse actually...).
Give it a shot, though. It won't kill ya, and it is likely that you could respond completely differently and maybe positively.
Well the Antacid has been working for over a week now. I was really at the point where I thought Adderall wasn't working at all and that I may need to increase (20mg XR). But so far taking it with the antacid and making sure that I stay away from acidic foods has worked wonders. I may still need to get a 10mg IR booster for the late afternoon, but I am so happy I read this thread. I didn't think that food and acidity could make such a drastic difference.
I'll let you know how things look in a week or two.
