my 7 year old son is taking 27mg of conserta the we have continued to have problems at school one of them beeing having emotional meltdowns. I have read that conserta can cause moodyness. The Dr has up his dosage to 36mg. I wondering if any one knowes if the moodyness wis get worse or not
It is hard to tell. I would try the higher dose on a weekend day so you can observe him at home. Are the meltdowns early in the school day or towards the end? Is the med wearing off early and your son experiencing rebound? Higher dose would help with this. My daughter's emotional meltdowns were all before we started concerta. She would get frustrated at not being able to function in class like the other students and developed depression and anxiety. She is doing much better this year.
My son has always been emotional. if there is any chance he thought he was beeing made fun of; meltdown. He was on 18mg Conserta half throught kinder without his outburst beeing a problem in class. I'm wondering if there is a higer expectation for emotional control by the teacher or if it is just taboo to be emotional becuse he is a boy or is it because he is 7.
The expectations or demands of school may be different or higher. My daughter knows when she is not performing at the level of the class (or meeting the teacher's expectations) and gets anxious, defiant, depressed and more easily enraged. It took us quite a while to realize that the teacher was blaming our daughter for the issues she was having in school (stated that she was just not trying and did not believe the dyslexia was real). This year is going better for her with the meds and other things we have implemented (IEP, behavior plan, better teacher, a year older to mature a bit). It can be extra tough on boys when they do not act according to the pre-conceived ideas that people have. My daughter acts more like a boy, but it seems more acceptable for girls to cross the gender lines.
I have read that stress can make ADHD symptoms worse and make it so the meds do not work as well (too much demand on the brain for the meds to be as effective), thus requirening a higher dose. Have you considered having him speak to a councilor? I know I cannot get my daughter to tell me when someone is teasing her. She denies it, even when her teachers and friends are telling me these things are happening.
