I just switched from Adderall XR 15 mg 2 x per day to Dex Spansules 10 mg 2 x per day.

I'm noticing a big difference compared to the adderall. My Doctor said they were basically the same thing, but the dex is definitely affecting me differently.

The adderall was more physical, but also more low frequency (best way I can describe it), and by the sixth week after my second dose I was almost too mellow. The morning does was great. I was calm, focused, and feeling mroe postive than usual. The problem is that after it wore off at night I had a real hard time sleeping, and I wouls notice my heart beating in my ears.

So, two days ago I switched to Dex spansules, and now I seem to be going through some initial side effects:

1. A little hyper and more talkative during the day (Didn't have this on adderall). Maybe the best word is unsettled. (High Freqeuncy?)
2. I feel more awake and alert than I was on the adderall, but also more high strung?
3. I'm having to really focus on not biting the side of my cheek. I didn't have this on adderall.
4. My jaws tend to be pretty tight throughout the day. I'm continual opening my mouth to loosen my jaw.
5. A little spaciness and occasional staring (I had this when I started adderall also)
6. Some difficulty sleeping, which I didn't have when I initially started adderall.
7. When it wears off I really notice a mental rebound, not tension or irritability, but more compulsive (OCD) than I remember being. I get trapped in patterns. (IE surfing the net etc.) I didn't have this on adderall. I would get more of a physical/emotional rebound.

So, will these SE's go away after a few days? in a month? or are they just part of the price for an alert, focused mind for an innatentive adult add?

Thanks for any and all replies.

The good news is that I don't seem to be having any problems with my heart on dex.

Despite there being d-amphetamine (dexedrine) in adderall they're two very different drugs. The dopamine action is much more profound for me on d-amp while adderall was much more physically noticable. This has to do with adderall being a racemic mixture.

The side effects should go away after a few weeks when you've had time to adjust. Or hopefully at least some of them.

this was exactly my problem with adderall! I went from 40mg adderall per day (IR) to 30mg dexedrine per day... heart problems and muscle problems gone!!!

dexedrine is way smoother than adderall for me. i took it first before they switched me to adderall due to my tolerance getting pretty high on dexedrine and then i was on adderall for 1 year without ever changing my dose, so we're going to try this for a while and see what my perfect dose is. i think i found it already since i'm pretty much doing about 50-75% of the dose that adderall was giving me without the l-amphetamine which is much less active.

i'm so glad my heart doesn't jump out of my chest anymore. :)

I found Adderall preparations to be particularly miserable. I came up with my own little phrase for that trial well more like rapid titration to max threshold (120 mg per day) Good Old Adderall Rage. While on Adderall I managed to get fired for my lovely anger issue and after the 90 mg daily dose got the old "pharmaceutical OCD" it wasn't until I took the IR 20 mg tabs that these were given to me off label in 1991 or so when it was called obetrol. Dexedrine gives me the tight jaw for awhile but besides the jaw It settles me down, makes me a bit lazy and a bit "one track" at times but I have taken it for 18 out of the 20 years I have been dx'd w/ ADDH or ADHD, and to me it is better for me than Adderall (don't need such a high dose) and I feel it is relatively safe. I tend to have to get nagged to even take it but besides the pharmacy attitude, I have no biggy with Dexedrine.

do you think l-amp increases norepinephrine, perhaps epinephrine more than d-amp?

Count yourself lucky.... the barr stuff practical puts me to sleep. You might LIKE the barr however... don't know if they make spanuals however.

I am taking generic adderall which I thought was Dexedrine but I am discovering is not. So does l-amp exist in amphatamine salts? Are certain types of amphetamines said to affect different brain chemistry? What is noreprinephrine? Epinephrine?

Yes, certain amphetamines effect brain chemistry differently.

Norepinephrine and epinephrine as they are called in the USA are also known as noradrenaline, and adrenaline.

Here are a couple of links that might help you better understand the way amphetamines work in the brain:

Dexedrine spansule is the name of the time release version of Dexedrine.

. . . they're two very different drugs.
with two distinct patents. Adderall is popular with kids because they can "feel" the high. Like this ever present tension. That's why it tastes like **** too.
