View Full Version : No More GSK Dexedrine
Bugs-n-Bunnys 11-02-06, 01:08 AM I have been taking 4 5mg IR Dexedrine tablets 4 times a day for a few months and it's been the best thing I've tried yet. However, I need the brand name due to the generics suck so bad. But I learned to day from GSK that Abbott Labs, manufacturer of GSK Dexedrine, has discontinued Dexedrine and will no longer make them.
I don't know what to do. I was given Dextrostat instead and it gives me headaches and is not working well at all. My trichitolimania is back, my eating disorder is back, it is like all the bad things are slowly coming back. I'm trying my damnedest to fight them, but it is very hard.
My nurse practioner said I need to build a case for the doctor to convince her to prescribe the Desoxyn, she refuses to prescribe it, she had a patient abuse it or something.
In addition, I cannot find a single pharmacy that will order the Mallickrodt brand dex., and believe me, I have looked from Fort Lauderdale to Vero Beach.
Anybody with sugggests?

Anybody with sugggests?Your Dr. has the option to order the active ingredient from the manufacturer, and have it sent to a local compound pharmacy which can then compound new pills or tablets around that ingredient. The manufacturer in question here happens to be Mallinckrodt since they are the supplier of the active ingredient for the manufacture of the brand name Dexedrine.
If the pills/tablets that the compound pharmacy creates for you do not work as well as the brand name, then you can return them to the compound pharmacy, and they can try to develop another new compound. They have many options when it comes to binding agents and fillers that are used in compounding a drug, and sometimes they may need a couple of tries to get something the patient finds acceptable.
As far as trying to find a pharmacy that will order the Mallinckrodt tablets is concerned, have you tried calling all the privately owned pharmacies in the area too? Sometimes these small "mom & pop" pharmacies have more options than the bigger chain store pharmacies do when it comes to ordering certain drugs.
In closing I would suggest that you contact Mallinckrodt directly, and see if they can possibly inform you of pharmacies in your area which can order there tablets, or that might already have them in stock.
Bugs-n-Bunnys 11-02-06, 12:56 PM Yep - been there - done that. Thanks.
However, I have not tried the compounding option. That sounds like a reasonable option.
I called GSK yesterday, then called Mallickrodt, they gave me the numbers to the local distributors in my area. I got attitude from 2 of them, i need to thry the third. But my headaches are getting worse everyday and now I'm nauseious. I was wondering why I was getting so many headaches lately, I rarely if ever get headaches, until I read a post yesterday of someone else who gets headaches from the dextrostat. I've also been eating like crazy and gaining weight, and today I'm sick. No, I'm not pregenant, at least I better not be, my husband got snipped after our last child.
As for calling all the smaller places. i was getting so much attitude from the people working there I was getting so mad, that it was not worth the stress. I would either get attitude or they would say immediately yes they have it, I would remind them it is a C-II drug and that it is probably behind lock and key, so they would them get the pharmacistis and nope don't have it.
Liars and slackers are major pet peives of mine.
However, I like the compounding idea more and more as I think about it.
You've been on both dexedrine and desoxyn, I am currently on 4 - 5mg tab 4 times a day - total of 16 pills a day, 80mg dexedrine daily.
How much desoxyn would I need to take? Wouls it be worth it to switch? I hate carrying around the big *** bottle of pills everywhere and I do not want to get pulled over or something with only a portiion of my prescription in a small pill box. Sure enough with my luck they will charge me with some drug offence and take my kids, or some god-awful thing like that. It always happens to me.
thanks for your help.
One more thing. I also have bad anxiety, the doc gave me ambilify, but I hate it, I am a total zoombie on it, and I tried taking it at night instead and still no help. Any suggestion on additional meds I could research. I have severe ADHD, severe anxiety, Trichitollimania, OCD, and Bulimia. (well I really could put the descriptor "severe" in fromt of all of them)
My suggestion when calling around to pharmacies about this stuff is to ALWAYS ask to speak to the pharmacist right off the bat. If they are too busy to talk then I call back at another time instead of talking about this stuff with pharmacy employees. Since you claim you got mad, and did not want to deal with the stress of calling anymore pharmacies, I must conclude that you have not called all the privately owned pharmacies in your area yet. I would be very suprised if there is not at least one of those small pharmacies that would not be willing to order the Mallinckrodt tablets for you.
As far as carrying around a big bottle of pills with you, I always keep an old empty bottle on hand once I use up all the pills, and I use this to transport smaller amounts. For instance, I keep a prescription bottle in my book bag that I carry with me on campus that usually has about 15 to 20 tablets in it. At home I keep the rest of my 400 tablets in the bottle that they came in. This way if I ever get pulled over, or have to deal with athorities, I have my pills in what appears to be their original prescription container, and it would be impossible to prove that it is not the original container.
Desoxyn is a good drug, but I prefer Dexedrine for a couple of reasons. First, Desoxyn is very expensive at around $2 a pill. If you have insurance then this is probably a non-issue for you, but for me the cost for a monthly script would be around $800 which is not reasonable. It's a good drug, but it's not so good that I would pay 8 times what it cost for a months worth of dex. Secondly, I find Desoxyn to be mildly sedating. It's not debilitating sedation mind you, but my academic schedule is quite demanding, and I am required to be as attentive and alert as possible. If I was not in school I think I would enjoy the relaxed lifestyle that the Desoxyn allows for me. Until that time comes, I will stick with the Dexedrine for the allertness and attentiveness it provides me.
Concerning whether or not it would be worth it to switch, I think that is something only your Dr. can answer. However, I would say that I think you should try all the versions of dextroamphetamine before you make the switch, because I find no difference at all between the Mallinckrodt and the brand name Dexedrine, and it appears from what you have said that the Dexedrine works pretty well for you.
Good luck, and I look forward to hearing what you find out after you call ALL of the "mom & pop" pharmacies in your area.
QueensU_girl 11-02-06, 01:50 PM Did you find that Dex caused your Trich, or relieved it? I have read that it can cause that. (And I have seen Meth users in my old hometown who were real skin-pickers.)
Amphetamines seem to stimulate fine motor movements and compulsions like that in people. (eg stereotypies or stereotyped behaviours.)
I seem to remember that in my rat lab days, too. They'll chew their fur, etc, on Stimulants.
jerry83 11-02-06, 03:17 PM Adderall definitely made me more compulsive (hair pulling, etc.)...
Bugs-n-Bunnys 11-03-06, 04:52 PM No, actually just the opposite - it totally stops it, like a light switch. I was extremely amazed. However, when coming down off the dextrostat is when it kicks in and bad very bad. The Barr dexedrine just does not work at all, it is like a sugar pill to me.
I've had numerous issues all my life, then recently after many years without seeing anyone, I broke down and saught help, and the doctor diagnosed me ADHD and said I was using all the other issues to medicate the ADHD. Both the Tric and the eating disorder stimulate the brain in a similar manner as amphitamines, basically I was self medicating.
She said I was the worst case she had ever seen and immediately started me on 30mg dex spansules, then in one week I was up to 60mg dex spansules. My life changed dramatically. It was like a majic wand touched my head and God said "Your cured". But the spansules did not last long enough, I have a 3 year old, 1 year old, husband, house, and full time job. My day last much longer than 8-10 hours. Plus, I am a biologist and sometimes I have to be in the field before sunrisae and then other times stay after sunset, so I wanted something more flexible. So I tried the dex IR 5 mg tablets, and they are great, except it is a major pain in my big butt to get my script filled. And now they no longer make it, so this last time the pharmacists gave me dextrostat. It's ok when I'm on it, but it dose give me headaches, it is when I come down at night that I start to have really bad problems. But this dose not happen on the brand dex.
I went and saw my nurse practitioner and even though I just filled the dextrostat on 10/20 he gave me a new script for brand dex, and I finally found some at 2 seperate pharmancies though, so I had to give back the script and get him to wrtie 2 sepreate scripts for 1/2 the pills each so that I may get the brand. I now have my scripts written for one week at a time, and yesterday i had to get 2 scripts for 3.5 days worth each.
I started back on brand dex last night and everything is much better. With all this hassle I had 4 pharmacist suggest the desoxyn, even my insurance company!!! they carry it on their mail order program, and I would never have to worry about any of this again, they would just mail me 3 months at a time all the time, with just one 3 minute phone call from the doctor, best of all it would be - FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE - NEVER AGAIN WOULD I HAVE TO PAY
THEY CHARGE ME 75.00 PER PERSCRIPTION FOR THE BRAND DEX AND NOW I HAVE TO HAVE THEM WRITTEN PER WEEK - MY COSTS HAVE JUMPED 4 TIMES!!!!!! FROM 75.00 PER MONTH TO 75.00 PER WEEK.
Bugs-n-Bunnys 11-03-06, 04:55 PM Oh - I forgot - Lars - I will try calling around again and just ask for the pharmasist period.
Thanks for the suggestion.
