View Full Version : straterra male sexual side effects
I have been taking Straterra for around 4 months and have experienced some of these side effects, things I've never experienced before.
Do other males have these side effects? Do they want to talk about them? Or perhaps is it better to talk about them on a different web forum, where we can remain "anonymous".
Also, if this is a fairly common occurance in men, does anyone know of a way to formally present this to the FDA or to the manufacturer of Straterra? I've never heard of official statements about these problems by the manufacturer, but if these pills are creating "plumbing" problems for men, I'd want to keep up to date on it, especially to find out if the problems are non-reversable.
Again, if people are uncomfortable talking about it here, let's do it somewhere else, such as at that other web forum, where we can use different member names. However, I do think it's important to not ignore this, especially if many males experience it.
If you want to go to the other web forum, just post it under a heading stating something like "here I am."
Wheel1975 12-14-03, 04:20 PM Ya. I think if you read the other posts people have been pretty open about sexual dysfunction, over function, urination difficulties, you name it.
FDA might not be very interested.
give it a shot.
healthwiz 12-14-03, 11:44 PM Best thing first is to discuss with your doctor, and not go by hearsay. You might get alarmed by congecture rather than getting informed. If the prostate is affected, it can affect sexual function or "plumbing" as you put it. I'm pretty sure that is listed as a side effect in the drug literature. I've had problems mainly with passing urine, its more difficult, and so the dose was reduced because that indicated some swelling of the prostate. On the reduced dose I get enough benefit from the drug still with almost no impinging on my ability to take a healthy leak! Amazingly my dose is way below that which you might expect to be helpful - I'm now on a trial of 25 mg. I was successful with 40 mg, so now we are trying 25...seems ok so far. The straterra helps me. Talk to your doctor asap.

chev24grd 01-07-04, 03:10 AM Don't feel uncomfortable talking about it. It's your health. I have had the same side effects. Painful or difficult urination, and the feeling that you "can't quite get the last few drops out". Along with Painful ejaculation and the strong urge to urinate afterwards. Also after urination I have noticed another strange side effect; a small amount of semen leakage. I didn't have a problem until the doc. raised my dose from 40mg to 80. I guess different people have different tollerances. JH376, you are not the first person I have heard of to have this problem. I have read quite a few other messages in other forums where men complain of the same side effects.
As far as the FDA is concerned; I think it is most important to let your doctor know of the problem first. My feeling is that if enough people complain, doctors will begin to report their findings. It probably wouldnt hurt to try to contact them though. My wife works in a pharmacy. I will try to see if she can point me in the right dirrection to contact them.
Wheel1975 01-07-04, 09:08 AM I continue to wonder about what adolescents are doing when they encounter these problems, since they are unlikely to feel like mentioning them at all.
There are similar problems for women.
NRI's are incontence drugs. They make it difficult to urinate.
If taking these drugs is "rebalancing my brain" then why is everything else so far out of whack?
I also have had probelms with Strattera. I have problems peeing. Very painful and hard to get out during the day. On the sexual side I have the desire but it is hard to function during the day. My doc is monitoring that. I started Adderall yesterday. My peeing seemed to be much better. I am taking the Adderall along with a lesser dose of Strattera(80mg). Anyone heard that the Adderall helps with the plumbing?
If you wish to report a side effect of Strattera, you can contact Eli Lilly at 1-800-LILLY RX. By law, they are required to report all documented medical issues to the FDA.
Eli Lilly is already aware of the data collected at the ADD Forums, but is not obligated to report on it, until it is phoned in. I will be calling in the annonymous data collected in the Side Effects Poll, located at http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2321, but I will not provide them with any of the other information reported by members, nor will I provide any identifying information, such as user names, etc. This is done to protect the privacy of our members. you wish to report your own side effects, please contact Eli Lilly directly.
As a male, I can be frank and tell you one thing about Strattera. It will constrict your "willy" and make it look like you just got out of a cold swimming pool. I am not kidding. It's like all the blood has been vacuumed out by some vampiric force. If any women out there are reading this, please be understanding if your man is taking Strattera. It does things to the human body that we have no control over. lol!
Also, I agree that this medication does cause some problems with urination. It almost feels like the urethra is being constricted along with the prostate and can sometimes be painful.
For these reasons, I'm not a big fan of Strattera. Does anyone know if these symptoms go away with long term use?
Wheel1975 01-08-04, 02:11 PM I know that for some people the symptoms are not bad enough to be a problem, and that for some people they ease somewhat with time.
ME12345 10-27-05, 02:48 PM HEllo, i read the forum posts and im am an adolesent but i take adderal and i know this is for stratera but i believe they are similar, i have taken it for 2 years and never had ne painful urination, the user was right about not wanting to say nething so i just have a question or 2. when i ejaculated the other day it hurt but the problem i have it liek for 15 minutes the head hurt when rubbed by my pants, etc. but now a day later when i urinate it also hurts for 10-15 minutes afterwards, i was wanderin if this occured in others as well, it feels like my plumbin in my penis may be too small and when i urinate it like stretches it out and i get that same pain in my my penis head for 10 -15 minutes, did any one else have this occur or was it that one time during ejaculation and then no more????
After taking Straterra for about 6 months (50 year old male), my problems with erectile dysfunction increased to the point where I was unable to perform at all. I take a couple of other medications (for cholesterol and GERD) and discussed the matter with my doctor. After researching my meds, he advised me that the only medication that I take which indicated even a potential problem with erectile dysfunction was Strattera and suggested that I could either discontinue it (switch back to Concerta) or try Cialis as an alternative. Not being one to add additional medications, I discontinued the Strattera and within a few days, the problem was completely resolved.
In addition, I also had problems with controlling the flow of urine, and never attributed that to Strattera. I figured I was just getting older! My problems were slow flow and leakage shortly after urination. I hadn't even thought about it, but I realized that about the same time that my erections returned, the problems with urination magically disappeared.
There were no other changes in lifestyle, diet, routine or medications. The Straterra was the only change - the problems started shortly after starting Straterra, and they disappeared when I stopped taking Strattera.
I'd rather put up with ADD than limit my sex life and dribble my urine!
I am 18 and have been on Strattera for about 1 1/2 years. In the beginning I had the usual side effects (headache, sleepy, loss of appetite) but all side effects (except loss of appetite) disappeared within the month and I really felt the Strattera was helping me with my ADD. In the last two months I have had the male sexual side effects that have been discussed in this forum. I just don't feel "normal" and it's all I can think about now.
I went to my doctor and he thinks it's the Strattera but doesn't understand why after 1 1/2 years all of a sudden I have this problem now. I had my urine tested and had a blood test to check my liver and everything came up normal. I have been on a half-dose (40mg) since Christmas and there has been no improvement at all. Next week the doctor is going to have me come off the Strattera completely for about 5 days to see if there is any improvement.
Does anyone know of any other ADD medication that will not have this side effect? The problem is I am doing very well on the Strattera (especially in school) and I hate the idea of stopping it unless there is something else out there but I am also not willing to go on like this. I feel miserable.
By the way, I did report my situation to the Strattera hotline. They said that approximately 7% of males experience these types of problems. I'm thinking it's a lot higher and guys are just not taking the time to call. Looks like my Strattera days are numbered...
:(
zz123zz 01-31-06, 05:42 PM I have had success with Adderall XR. Prior to Adderall I was on Strattera for a few weeks and I had the same problems you mentioned.
QueensU_girl 01-31-06, 08:14 PM re: #8
What a drug does to the penis, it will do to the clitoris (exact same nerves, anatomically, but hidden more deeply).
Just another reason to avoid Strattera.
I learned to avoid SSRIs and other Serotonin drugs after taking them and having sexual side effects.
Awful!
Emma
I had the same symptoms everyone has reported (except QueensU_girl) :D. I was taking 80mg of Strattera in the morning, at that time. I switched to 50mg in the AM and 25mg at 2pm. After a while the side effects went away.
I also notice, if my bladder is extremely full, it is hard and/or almost impossible to start urinating. Once I start, it is really slow and takes forever.
