View Full Version : Trouble Spelling?
happycat 11-20-06, 02:49 AM I've never been the greatest speller, but am pretty decent (at least with the help of spell-check ;)) But I was wondering if anyone else can relate to some of my issues--I make a lot of typos, but that's more because I type fast, and not a real issue..... what I do often experience though, is that I sometimes have a hard time spelling words I KNOW how to spell-- and I will stare at the mispelled word knowing that something's wrong, trying to make changes, but can't figure it out. BUT when the spell check fixes it, it becomes so obvious-- I'm talking about simple words here like "pursue, hello, please."
Any idea why I have this brain freeze?? Anyone else relate?
Color Scheming 11-20-06, 03:01 AM lol i do it all the time. i once forgot how to spell about. i was like abut abot wtf about but that doesnt look right. I dont know why it happens. But i know people without add who does that as well. I think its kind of funny actually, unless im writing something important that i get frustrated.

Any idea why I have this brain freeze?? Anyone else relate?Interestingly enough, I do not share this problem, in fact I really **** people off because whether I really know a word or not I can spell it in out loud correctly when they ask. Writing it is a little more difficult. I chalk this skill up to the first 3 years of grammar school. In the early 60's I was taught phonics. I'd say the problem exists because kids are not taught the structure of words anymore. Kid get a list of words to memorize and that's it these days.
Now who is old enough to remember how to diagram a sentance? :eyebrow:
NJTrout (please don't make a big deal about the spelling in this response...typing in the middle of the night.:D
happycat 11-20-06, 06:36 AM I did sentance diagrams in 6th grade--lol. I'm 26, so I guess they did it through the 90s at least :) Actually, my grammer is great (though I'm sure I make tons of errors when I bang something out on these forums), and I almost ALWAYS catch common mistakes in papers, etc. and it drives me INSANE for some reason. If only I could spell
AndreaPurple 11-20-06, 08:09 AM Yup, I do the same thing sometimes. But there are a few other things too, like sometimes I will type out a word, spelt correctly and it just doesn't look right to me for some reason. And then there are the words that if you say them a few times they start to sound funny, I think that happens to a lot of people, I've had other people say that happens to them too. But the one that ticks me off the most is when I am trying come up with a word that I know, either writing or talking, and I just can't think of the word. This happens to me all the time and I hate it. It's just so annoying because I know the word, it's in my head somewhere, I just can't come up with it for some reason.
peridot 11-20-06, 05:08 PM Strangely enough, I'm good at spelling, but I can't do it aloud. The spelling bee situation in which one is given a word to spell orally? I was always terrible in those at school (something my teachers could never understand). And if someone asks me if something is spelled correctly, I have to write the word down to be able to tell.
I can remember diagramming and I've taught it as well.
AndreaPurple, I know what you're talking about. Not being able to come up with a word drives me crazy (ier?). My best tactics are free associating and stopping the effort to remember the word-- which usually pops into my mind suddenly 5 minutes later (and causes me to shout it aloud triumphantly. This does nothing to diminish my reputation for being distractable.)

BY the 1990’s I was middle age but they did these things as well as phonetics when I went to school in the 1960’s and 1970’s. . . . neither helped my spelling. . . phonetics (which isn’t spelled phonetically by the way) did little for me. . . short e’s and i’s sound a like. . . .and that is only one example. . . I don’t think in words most of the time so using a diagram would do little for me. . . it would slow me down way to much to be an efficient tool in adulthood.
~boots~ 11-23-06, 03:41 AM I am a good speller too, but I often type the complety wrong word...
*~ §EEK ~* 11-23-06, 04:13 AM lol i do it all the time. i once forgot how to spell about. i was like abut abot wtf about but that doesnt look right. I dont know why it happens. LOL :D I do that too! Alot! It drives me nuts! :D
Your word choice (About) was a great example! LOL :D
"About" is one of those words that could easily stump me one day out of the blue for no particular reason at all!
Even though I've been spelling "about" correctly for years I would all of a sudden think it should have a "W" in it...."Abowt" and maybe it should have a "D" in it too.... "Abowdt" <-- there ya go, that's how my dyslexic brain thinks "about" should be spelled! LOL :D
I think there's a very fine line between the dyslexic brain and ADD brain!
But then again, how would I know? I have them both! :)
What were we talking abowdt?? :D
stratdude1 11-23-06, 12:24 PM I've found I mis-spell the same 10 or so words for the last 8 years. Spell checker catches each and every time, but I persist on initially spelling them MY way. Since we have no spell checker here, let's try a little test:
accomodate
Crap. The harder I try thinking of others, the less likely it is I'll be able to remember them. Oh well......
Oh yeah - another one, I constantly use "the" twice in a row, and never ONCE have I caught the mistake without the help of spell checker. Even if I re-read the email 5 times b/c it's going to such a large audience I want to make sure it sounds perfect.
HighFunctioning 11-23-06, 01:07 PM I'm not a bad speller, but I do use a spell checker and refer to a dictionary quite often. Habitually, I tend to mix i's and e's (e.g. receive and recieve), mix similar sounding suffixes (e.g. -ays with -ase.). For the most part, when I make spelling mistakes, it looks very similar to the correct spelling. I often have trouble remembering how to spell common words as well... but that's more of a long-term memory retrieval issue (not that it isn't actually there...).
~boots~ 11-23-06, 10:06 PM I cant spell yatch, or is it yacht, or yahct ? you know the thing that floats !! LOL
Not only I can't spell, when I write a paper I often write some words twice.
Often times I'm too lazy to use spell check even when I am on my meds.
