Interesting. So they are saying that ADD is just made up and something that many youth today think they have?

Interesting. So they are saying that ADD is just made up and something that many youth today think they have? It's ambiguous whatever he meant, but regardless what he meant by contagious, the CIA wants those qualities associated with ADD.

Instead, he said, the CIA is after the generation that has grown up on the Web. "They were born with ear buds in their ears. They are ADD and it is contagious," he said, referring to attention deficit disorder. "We need that kind of talent here." It sounds like they are looking to add some net savvy, multi-tasking, parallel thinking/connection making ADD brains to the machine!

yes I certainly got that point. I don't blame them. Meme way of thinking? Good for the CIA. For their code talk and secret behaviour...I hope I got it. Is Meme catchy? lol

Very interesting SL, so I can't sit still and not think, and not have the "cable go off" so-to-speak because I am taught not to, its catchy. So question, if I am ADD (undx'd right now) how come that is not catchy. My train of thought, my racing mind etc. be viral and passed on to other people? Ahh..wait now...it can be, passed on genetically. Ok so I am lost again...:(

Note: If we are talking about memes. Just a thought.

They need a cadre of genetically postmodern ADDers who "think outside box."

'Yes, you get it. Viral is used analogously in the context of the meme. Memes replicate like genes replicate and mutate, etc. One catches a meme by repeating it and if they repeat it to another and they catch it, it has successfully replicated and spread. If not, then the memes dies or goes dormant. One's genetic propensity for ADD or not merely alters or influences memetic replication and mutation. The link SB_UK gave is a good intro as well the work of Dr. Susan Blackmore (the X link above). She wrote the Meme Machine (http://www.susanblackmore.co.uk/Books/Meme%20Machine/mmsynop.html).

I see what the CIA is saying. They are basically complimenting the fact that many people with ADD are creative and smart.

Personally, I couldn't think of a cooler job that would take advantage of the skills that someone with ADD has. Like murder cases where you investigate the scene and help trackdown lowlife criminals. Stuff like discovering how the murder suspect could of made a call on the phone when it was unplugged from the wall. All the little details that an true ADDer would be excellent at.

Sure it has it's downsides. It's potentially dangerous and you could be in dangerous situations. But there are allot of people that would rather live a little on the edge than just exist. Does anyone know anyone that worked for the CIA? I suppose they are not supposed to reveal anything about it even if they could lol. :D

The focus of the article was to show that they are not looking for the next james bond.

"""""""""""""For instance, the CIA wants you to know that everyone who works there does not drive a sports car with machine guns in the tailpipes. Successful applicants will, in fact, see their family and friends again. Also, "you don't have to know karate or look good in a tuxedo to work at the CIA," the personality quiz says."""""""""""

What they are saying is that, they are looking for a new generation of web-masters. Mastermind problem solvers, and hyperfocued hackers.

People who have ADD, have alot of benifital qualities. We can take a problem and look at it in a lot of diffrent ways, are creative ability lets us problem solve as well.

Empathy, Hyperfocus, Insomina, a lot of things the CIA could use.

However, most inportentley, the CIA could be haveing problems finding "normal" people, and adjusting them to the hectic, and fast pace of working in a agency. So there would be benifits to finding someone who can keep up with that speed of information, and train them to get the full benifit out of thier "disorder"

In outher words "Find people who have the means, then teach then the know-how" opposed to "Find the people with the know how, and hope that they dont burn out in a few years"

I read somewere that most agents only last 4 years, before being put on a job as a paper pusher, because they just burn out, But dont qoute me, that information is old.

Things like the personailty quiz, and advertizeing requitment during "Mythbusters" is a effort to target certian group of people.

...IMO :)

Could people try to start a flame war with a water pistol!

Instead, he said, the CIA is after the generation that has grown up on the Web. "They were born with ear buds in their ears. They are ADD and it is contagious," he said, referring to attention deficit disorder. "We need that kind of talent here."

Maybe that is what the CIA is looking for, people who want to begin flame wars with water guns so much safer than the real thing. . . .

Hmmm this CIA test I wonder if spelling counts?

OOPS I almost forgot

I am supposed to be discouraging flame wars aren't I ?

I think we have a lot of the out of box thinking, risk taking and creative skills the CIA's looking for.... unfortunatley, I think most of us would not have the ability to actually remember or notice a lot of the small details that are needed for CIA work-- at least the stereotypical "spying".... Can you imagine? The most brilliant ideas, but absolutely no awareness of what's going on? A crime could happen in front of me, and I probably would not even notice-- scary thought, huh?

Can you imagine? The most brilliant ideas, but absolutely no awareness of what's going on? A crime could happen in front of me, and I probably would not even notice-- scary thought, huh?I think ADDers have the perfect skills for working in the CIA, as long as they paired us with a non-adder to help us manage our "disfunctional parts". I can remember almost anything that seems out of place in a conversation or in a room... but I can't find my keys or remember what day it is. Much like "Monk" needs his nurse to help him handle everyday things... we would need someone to assist us in the course of our work.

I'm not saying we would make great "secret agents"... Just that we would make great investigators/interrogators. Now that I'm beginning to understand myself better, I've lately become quite the poker player because I've learned to stop second guessing my empathy... and learned to trust my hunches. I believe that it's because I pick on subtle clues to how my opponent feels about his hand... Call it esp or intuition if you want... to me... it's just perception.

It's the tape recorder that tapes conversations/actions that my brain refuses to accept as reality. I usually know someone is trying to decieve me if I can't figure out what would lead them to say or do a particular thing that I find suspicious. I don't consciously try to interrigate someone... I'm just very curious about things I don't understand... and I don't understand lots of things... especially people.

No I don't think I'm some kind of genious/superhero... I think more people have a talent for spotting the "not so obvious" than those that don't. I just think it's easier for some of us to trust what we feel/intuit about the information we are receiving.

Heh... Now I'm going to have to do some research on the subject of esp and police interrigators. If you've seen psych... you probably get exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about... and I'm sure there's a post about esp and ADD here somewhere... I've just never done a search for it.

Anywho... :D

Yeah, I also have the problem of losing track of what topic I'm on too. So I would not do everything great either. But I'm not looking to be a James Bond "secret agent" either. Just mainly the "Invesigator" role, like in CSI and such.

Not the greatest at real fast decisions, I need time to think things through. So I'm talking about cases where you have the time required to do some thinking.

Human resources is going to have a hard time with this job requirement. ;)Heh... If I get a call from a CIA recruiter... I'll check it out. As it stands... I've failed after 2 attempts at college. While I do have military experience in the telecommunications field... that was a while ago and I didn't get much experience at the job I was trained for.

While it has been pointed out that they hire for all kinds of non-degree types of jobs... those jobs pay accordingly. I can be a clerk almost anywhere and get paid the same. Heh... I "FEEL" that I would do well in an investigative/interrogative role... but I have no training or anything to prove that I "WOULD" be good at it. If companies would hire me based on what I believe I can do... I'd already have a cush high paying job.

Heck... If I could do a low pay trial period at most companies(that would supply a personal assistant:rolleyes:)... I'm almost positive I could not only pass muster but pass many(if not most) college grads. The problem is HR departments can't tell the difference between ability and pedigree. Some people have both... but most don't... and I'm one that don't.

If you feel that the CIA or something of the like would be a good fit for you... then by all means go for it. Just be sure you have realistic expectations... And I'd advise against trying to sell them on ADD. :D
