View Full Version : Question about Adderall & Wellbutrin & the Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6)
SteakForChicken 11-26-06, 06:42 PM I've been reading about ADHD drug combos and the Adderall & Wellbutrin combo seems to have a good record. I am on Wellbutrin right now but its not doing enough by far. I am seeing my pdoc in a week and will probably be prescribed a stimulant in addition to the WB. So I found out that bupropion is an inhibitor of the CYP2D6 enzyme & amphetamines are a substrate of the CYP2D6 enzyme. Which means by taking them both at the same time, bupropion is blocking the breakdown of amphetamines, which keeps the amphetamines in your system longer, right? This is just my guess, as I am not really a scientist, and don't really know if I'm just making a casual connection. If I am right though, than I would really like to try the Adderall, I think it would work well, and combined with the WB, I think it would stay in my system longer, because I know people have issues with it wearing off too early in the day. If anyone knows anything more about this, or the Wellbutrin/Adderall combo, please help me out! Thanks! :)
QueensU_girl 11-27-06, 12:29 AM I've been on Dexedrine PLUS Wellbutrin before.
At first it seemed okay.
With time, though, it caused a buildup of increased "unpleasant" side effects, not really the buildup/prolonging of "good effects", as I think you are wanting. eg bad effects = Tight muscles (headaches, neck pain, etc), pressure in my head feelings, BP increases.
If you are going to try a Stimulant, i'd suggest you ask yer doc to try it alone, first.
[Otherwise, you will add the Stimulant, while on Wellbutrin, and think the problem is the Stimulant med for feeling crummy -- when it may be the Combo that is the problem.]
A lot of SEffects and problems come from being on too high a dose.
What are you looking for in an ADHD med, effect wise? What is Wellbutrin NOT doing for you, yet?
SteakForChicken 11-27-06, 10:19 AM Hm, yeah I can see what you mean about the buildup of side effects. I already have some bad ones from the WB, like tension headaches at least 25 days a month. I don't think it is possible to get off the WB though, at my evaluation/testing thing, the doctor made a report for my regular psych of recommendations and whatnot and it said to keep me on the antidepressant and to strongly consider an ADHD med in addition. The Wellbutrin isn't doing the job because its basically just an antidepressant for me, its great that it works for ADHD in some people, but I just don't get that effect. What I'm looking for is a medicine that will let me able to read a chapter in a book without wandering off 2 paragraphs in... and to be able to remember to do my homework.. and to remember ANYTHING for that matter, instead of everything that is important getting lost in the black hole that is my brain. Also I'm afraid of getting the medicine thing "wrong". Like, I am afraid my pdoc will not work with me, and just throw me a script and expect it to be fine. I know its a really long process of getting the med thing right, and I don't think some docs (ie mine) are willing to work with their patients. I don't KNOW this yet, as I haven't been to her in a quite some time... (like april) but it is just a hunch.
So basically what I'm saying is I know meds are tricky, and I don't want to get screwed.
Are those "tension headaches" a very dull but strong ache, like getting hit on the head with a sock full of wet sand? That's what Wellbutrin does to me...which is a shame, since it seems to help my focus and energy level.
Why was the Wellbutrin prescribed? If for ADD/ADHD then dropping it would make some sense. But, if prescribed for depression, I would be VERY careful about adding and subtacting meds. You can be on an antidepressant and a stimulant at the same time. Some combos are better than others. But remember that everyone will react different to each med. Talk to your doctor about what you are feeling and offer input on what you think might work.
