Hi I'm new here. I've been searching the web trying to find information about add/adhd. And Ill try and keep this short. (skip to bottom to read my question, if you want to skip my story)

I am from British Columbia, Canada.
I just turned 16. And over the year's my schooling has been declining, and my self esteem, and I have quite school 4 times this past 2 year's. Tried all different kind's of school program's. My family doctor diagnosed me with add, But I have yet to go see a psyciatrist for a full evaluation test. My add effect's me very badly. And I beleive I am bipolar also, and my memory is way worse then most people's :/.
From all the school program's I tried, within a week it started to head down a steep hill. I have been getting more depressed over the year's and no longer hang out with my best friend's due to it. And I am a promising artist, but even that I have lost interest in. I pretty much have no interest in anything anymore really. I have tried ADD medication also and it did not help. Since I have dropped out of school for the last time, I have tried working. And I can never hold a job. I heard my mom tell me about some sort of disabilities check you can get monthly for add. Apparently my 2 cousin's have it and they live in Alberta. They get monthly paycheck's to live on, because they are unfit to hold a job as declared by doctor's or something.

So what I am wondering is how would someone like me get something like this? Is this avaliable in British Columbia? Am I old enough? Because I really don't know what else to turn to.

Any help would be greatfull thankyou.

(oh i forgot to say, I did do a forum search and I couldn't really find anything related to this..)

I'm not from Canada, so I have no idea regarding your question.

But,

I STRONGLY urge you to see a psychiatrist and to get a complete eval for ADHD & bipolar. If you are diagnosed, proper treatment can do wonders.

Best wishes

I have heard of some thing like this getting checks for being unable to work in Canada, I read it in one of Scuro's post a couple of months ago. I will provide hyperlink if I can remember which one it is . . . . .and be distracted less than a dozen times by ADHD partner

Although ADD can make holding down a steady job hard and some inattentive type have problems with motivation most ADDers are motivated we just aren't motivated toward activities we are uninterested in doing. . . like tax returns, paper work dishes and laundry. We do not usually have problems being motivated by things we are interested in such as video games, TV, music, and ADD forums.

So the loss of interest in usual activities isn't an ADD typical behavior unless depression also is a factor. ADD tend to prefer "company" co-existing conditions are not unusual.

I am getting a phyciatric evaluation, but it wont be for another month cause they're booked up. But I already have been diagnosed with add. But this is to test if I may have other problem's, and how severe my add is :/.

Kakkoii,

I know how frustrating the ADD must be for you. Let me tell you though, you are only 16! I know what it's like to be in a hole for school/work, and i understand how demoralizing it can be. My advice would be to put all of your effort into getting a diagnosis and recieving treatment. Don't write yourself off too soon, you don't even know your potential until you begin treatment. You have to live with this for the rest of your life, and the least you can do for your own well being is to know that you gave it your all. I went to Claire Hawes and associates for my evaluation, this is in North Vancouver. It took a while after my diagnosis to find somone who would treat a 21 year old for ADHD, but it's been a month since I have started Ritalin, and I feel much more focused, organized, optimistic and intelligent.

I hope things work out for you, this isn't an easy process but it's better to try then live for the rest of your life wondering what if.

There is a wide variety of medications available for treating ADHD. If you tried one and had poor results, there are many more to try. Don't give up. Get to your doctor and discuss it with him/her.

There are a few people (20%-30%) for whom medications do not work. Nobody knows why, but it happens. But don't write yourself off as untreatable until you have tried everything possible.

I never heard of the check thing before but I also don't live in Canada. I'm sure it can't be much.

I want to make sure I understand correctly, you don't want treatment, therapy, or meds. You do want to be declared disabled and get a monthly check? Your cousins probably are the best source of information since they are receiving checks and most of us are in America or places other than Canada.

Most execellent idea RADD we also have a section for people who are from Canada. . . in regional section of the forums.
