View Full Version : Is this something an ADD person would do?
austyns_dad 12-05-06, 10:00 AM I bought a tub of M&M cookie dough from my kid's school fundraiser a couple of months ago. It had been in the freezer waiting for the day when we'd take it out and thaw it out and make cookies. I hadn't noticed that it was opened or anything.
My step-daughter had it out and was making cookies on Sunday night. She made a dozen. I tried a couple when she was done, even snuck some cookie dough while she was making them. Something was funny though. There weren't any M&M's in the dough or in the cookies.
She made some more yesterday when she was home sick from school. Again no M&M's. I checked the remaining batter that was in the fridge, maybe a 10th was left, there were a few M&M's in the bottom.
I said something about the lack of M&M's in the cookies.
My wife fessed up to eating all of the M&M's out of the cookie dough. She left the dough, most of it, but ate out each of the M&M's.
Is this something a person with ADD would do? Has this happened in your house?
I want to laugh at this but I'm upset that I only got plain cookies.
bellyoffire 12-05-06, 12:08 PM I wouldn't pin it down specifically to ADHD. That could be something anyone could do. Candy is not a good thing for someone with ADHD to take part of. Maybe once in a while only.
The sugar rush is bad and others have sensitivities to chocalate that cause hyperactivity and innattention.
FrazzleDazzle 12-05-06, 02:00 PM The ADHD COOKIE CAPER HAS SPREAD.......
I had the same tub of cookies supposedly baked by 14-year-old DS while he was at home alone. I came home to a lot of missing cookies. He turned his back on them to go to the bathroom, and the pups got to a batch and a half of them.
I am also able to laugh at this now as well, but very dissapointed that I got -0- cookies.
This may sound more like a binge eating type problem but I can tell you that both my wife and daughter will sneak chocolate at any opportunity. They are both ADD and there may be a connection to the brain stimulation from the sugar rush. My daughter will even sneak the chocolate milk mix in a baggy and eat it plain for the rush. My chocolate chips for pancakes are constantly disappearing. The only real solution is to remove the candy from the house. Don't buy any as they will find more than enough outside the home. I do all the shopping because my wife was incapable of passing the junk food isle. I believe this is partly due to the impulsivity commonly related to ADD and linked to the brain stimulation as a form of self medication. So yes I think it's related. If you find a solution, I'd love to hear it.
VisualImagery 12-05-06, 10:48 PM I eat chocolate and candy sometimes. I have ADD, but I don't do things like sneak or pick stuff out. I can take it or leave it. I don't find any difference in my ADD on candy or off!
BTW, is this the first time? If it is, ignore it. It could be a one time wonk! If this is a habit, it could be something totally unrelated to ADD! I have seen people without ADD do this stuff. ADD is not related to everything. If that is assumed, other disorders and diseases could be overlooked. Not healthy for the person.
My take on this,
RADD
I don't know, for my wife and daughter, it's not a habit. It's a need. They must do it. The sneaking is either an embarrassment type issue or it helps to satisfy the risk taking behavior that is often associated with ADD.
So we have the risk taking behavior, the impulsivity and the reward of a sugar rush associated with candy consumption that will alter the brains chemical composition.
If it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it's probably a duck.
Yes you will see people that haven’t been diagnosed with ADD exhibiting the same behavior, but the people involved here have been diagnosed and the behavior, actions and rewards are all classic symptoms associated with ADD.
IMHO<O:p</O:p
I can't each chocolate!!!! If I eat one piece of chocolate I eat 20 (or more)! Nothing better than a french fry dipped in a chocolate frosty on a high stress day. I do find that with Concerta my cravings for caffeine drinks and chocolate have gone down. Still best to have none. My sister will not allow chocolate in her house because if she knows it is there she won't stop until it is gone.
austyns_dad 12-06-06, 09:53 AM Thank you to everyone for their responses. I really wish I could convince my wife to go and see someone and find out what exactly she has.
VisualImagery 12-06-06, 09:01 PM Sorry she resists. That is hard. Maybe you could go and get help to work with this. If it is harming your relationship-you need to be honest with her-while being loving and supporting and affirming. Yes, it can be done. Best to you.
Sounds like a classic case of M&M addiction. Very tragic, and often under diagnosed! I have been guilty of picking out all the Mr. Goodbars from a bag of Hershey assorted candy. My brother used to eat all the marshmallows in the cereal. I think it may be just a case of jonesing for M&M's! I really don't mean to make light of this, it could be alarming for some diagnoses, but I don't think it is for ADD. The fact that she was able to stand there and carefully pick out all the M&M's kind of rules that out. I would have lost track of what I was doing after eating 3 M&M's! I would have figured it was easier to do it with a fork, gone to get the fork, realized there were no clean ones, washed the dishes, go to put them away, realized the shelf lining needed to be replaced, went to store to buy liner, figured since I was there might as well get groceries....and I think you get the picture.
Here's an idea, next time you get the cookie dough, buy an extra bag of M&M's. You could A) give bag to wife before she attacks the cookie dough again, or B) hide the bag and grab a handfull as you bake each batch. LOL, imagine your wife's face when you bring out the cookies and there are M&M's in them! She'll wonder how that happened since she ate them all!
Great post msam76, you made me laugh! First time all day. Thank you!!!!
QueensU_girl 12-06-06, 11:08 PM I think it's more attributable to 'chocoholism'. ;)
VisualImagery 12-06-06, 11:11 PM msam gets the brilliant solution of the day award! Way hilarious dudette!
crime_scene 12-07-06, 12:15 AM I might pick out m and m's out of my own cookie dough, but not my daughters...so I'd say she thought she'd get just a couple and then got engrossed in the task without thinking that it would mean her daughter wouldn't have m's in her cookies.
but I like msam's answer as well!!!
