Hi everyone. I met with my PDoc today we agreed to begin stim treatment for my ADD-inattentive again. I had never been on Dex, so we went with that. Now here is where it is interesting:
I had always hated the fact that I would get this gritty emotional "high" from my Adderall XR and then, later on, a rotten rebound effect or crash. My doc told me that if I'm getting a buzz from my stims, the dose is too high. He said that one should only aim to better one's concentration using the stims... not to better one's mood. So... I may end up taking far less of a dose than I had been before.
My question to the Dex veterans here is: is it fair to say that getting an emotional lift from Dex is an indication that one's dose is too high? (I'm starting out on 10mg spanules.) How do you know when you're on the proper dose?
Also, I'd like to get to a place where I don't have to take "med holidays" at all. My doc assures me that this is possible if I take the proper dose. Have you found this to be the case?
Thanks! :)

OK, not sur where but the information IS HERE for those questions but were ADD so im not gonan make you search lol (and i asked the same when i started it so its no biggie)
OK for the 'high' that (from what i understand) does NOT mean the dose is too high the first few weeks i was on dexedrine i felt relaxed, not high but i was very talkative and i was jsut happy i felt positive not high but good. thats normal your taking amphetamine thats what amphetamine dose itll go away...
determinnig the proper dose for your meds is a hard thing for OTHERS to determine YOU must determine when its the correct dose, but overall ive heard that its like a hill you keep increasing your dose until you reach peak effectivness then you increase again and all that happenes is your ADD gets worse, teh effectiveness goes UP until it PEAKS then it starts to decline thats how you adjust your dose to what you need the effectiveness will flaten out or it will get worse...
now the drug holiday is a HOT topic here overall i think people agree its true jus tdont take meds on the weekends and teh ammount of dex you need should stay low, i made the mistake of taking it on the weekends and if i do so for more than a week or two i feel drained so i take a break for 2-3 days and let my body rejuvenate itself and then start fresh again and I PERSONALLY DO NOTICE A DIFFERENCE as for ohers they may not as your you you may or oyu may not
good luck BTW are you on generic brand? and 10 mg once twice or three times daily? (just at breakfast or breakfast and lunch or breakfast lunch and at 4?)

It is entirely possible to function without ever taking a "medication holiday" at the proper dose. People don't take holidays from wearing glasses and just squint for the weekend do they? The difference lies in finding the right prescription ;) and since we do not take our meds to go "up" but to "move sideways" into clarity, I am sure your doctor is quite correct that you will one day find the proper dose at which med holidays are no longer required :). Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

I never take holidays! My doc told me not to. I do not do well on weekends without my meds! Not everyone on the forum agrees with holidays. I need to function during all my waking hours!

RADDOh man me too! My doc has never so much as mentioned holidays to me or to Spacemania...Ya wanna see some soup burn to a black crisp? Wanna watch 2 goodish sized people trip over carpet lint? Ask her or me to take a med holiday! She took her full dose of meds all summer vacation and was GLAD she did. :)

Thanks everyone for their imput! :D
I'm taking the d-amphetamine ER capsules made by Mallinckrodt. I'm going to be taking them three times daily, because I need that full day coverage, but for this week it's simply once in the morning so that I get a solid read on when they wear off. So far, they seem to last as long as the Adderall XR ones did, about 5.5 to 6 hours.
I noticed something really interesting yesterday. I noticed that as I was getting the second wave of effect from the capsules, I started feeling that "speedy" feeling a little more than I'd like... and my driving became poorer during that period! So I thought that maybe 10mg is too much to start at.
Today I'm trying the 5mr ER. Maybe that's all I'll need. Or maybe I really need to check out my liver function. lol. Who knows? It's strange that after taking Adderall XR at 20mg 3 times a day that I may end up taking much less and getting the same (or better) focusing results.
As for the med holidays... Not much of a fun vacation if you ask me. I really don't want to have to take them. Watching football on Sundays takes focus too! ;)

That's always a good plan to start slowly and take note of when meds wear off (or you begin to rebound). Some people have to stagger long acting meds to get the best effects.

Not really so odd, the ratio between the different meds dose vs effectiveness is not the same at all. That's one reason among many that we call this the Medication Game around here.

Watching football on Sundays takes focus too! ;)Well as far as I know, vacations are not a requirement and yes, you do need to focus to watch football...of course I cannot focus on it because it bores me to tears but I have pastimes I need to focus on too...my many, many graphics posted here were accomplished during medicated periods too!
Cheers! Keep us posted. :)
