View Full Version : breath uhg!

I had something happen yesterday that I thought to be a side effect of the drug intake.

My breath turned into quite a strong smell.. very reminiscent of a stale arm pit. It was strong. I caught a whiff of it myself and went to blame on the the teens in the house who had just walked by me.

A discreet investigation revealed it was not her but in fact me and my mouth! I was mortified. Once I was aware of it I began to wonder what I had done differently.

I had a light day of eating and had consumed a good portion of water leaving my urine a pale yellow.

Have others had reactions like this to Dexedrine? It was foul in the extreme and was verified by my wife in very short order. heh

In the manner of med students,

If you hear hooves, think horses not Zebras...

i would suggest flossing and gargling (in that order) first, and probably ruling out dex and water as considered culprits...

Dexedrine is a stimulant and diuretic so if you have a sinus infection it may have cleared your head enough to start ventilating a long infected sinus... (this is an example of a Zebra idea.)

Wheel.

I floss and gargle at least once a day as routine.. I usually have a good brush at my tongue too.

I have battled a sinus infection in the past and now I am familiar with the symptoms.. I have had no trouble for the last several years. I also had a very thorough physical in October with lots of blood work and probing.

I take it that this side effect would be not very likely to be a result of the Dex.. thanks for the nod. I'll check out other variables.

I like your analogy.. it works well with so much problem solving. I'm leading a 16 year old girl in a 4H project on car care and this is often the jumping off place when she has questions. Car won't start? Check the battery.. it's easy to do and first in the process of elimination. I had never heard it phrased your way but I'll be using it in that format now for sure.. < g > thanks for that.

Now.. what exactly is the avatar you have posted here... ?

Sure... it was an "ignorant" (uninformed by close contact) suggestion... < smile >

the avatar... at least when you are asking, was a red lava lamp in a jumble... made invisible by darkness.

I got the example some place very low brow... like ER the TV show.

I've had a bad taste in my mouth ever since I started adderall. Might be dryness, though, too... I seem to notice I consume less water.

unreal33 that would be the diuretic action that Wheel mentioned. I too am having to consiously drink my quota of water.
Cheers! clocker

itschaotic,
I had some side effects such as dry mouth and an odd aftertaste but no bad breath (probably just because I was constantly brushing my teeth to get rid of the odd taste in my mouth)

Wheel, (or anyone who knows the answer)
Been on the dex for a couple of days and it was working wonderfuly. I was not aware of any sinus infection before I started taking it but after a couple of days on the med I seem to have some sort of sinus infection or cold. Can dex be the CAUSE of this or is it most likely that I would have gotten sick anyway?

Crazy_Cutie thanks for your reply.

I have to watch now.. a good mouth wash and keeping my mouth clean along with enough water seems to be standard.

I just too several days off of the dex and the mouth wasn't a problem. Great to have the libido rush back in for the anniversary too hehe

Cheers! Ian.

Most likely they are not contributory to each other, but you should radically increase you consumption of water. "Just "staying even" when taking a diuretic is harder than it seems.

Anything that causes a "change" in your mucous membranes could be accussed of contributing to their vulnerablity to other attack. Whether it is realy significant would be hard to test individually.

Wheel I am accustomed to drinking plenty of water. I discovered that it helped tremendously during the spring hay fever season to keep my symptoms to a minimum. I'm quite familiar with the merits of having lots of water and didn't miss the changes that occurred in my physiology when I started with the Dexedrine. I guess that's why I was a little surprised to find my mouth so foul when I thought I had all the bases covered.

I have begun to think there is something about raisin bran, brown sugar and milk that is a heavy contributor. I haven't been willing to duplicate the process but have not been so badly afflicted since I quit with the bran flakes.

I have not noticed my immune system taking much of a hit while on Dexedrine. I am just shaking off a cold now that was light and easy as colds go. I had the good sense to lie down and sleep for a couple of days which is almost without precedent. I am feeling stronger by the day. Thank-you chemistry!

Well I rarely ever get colds or sinus infections so it's a pretty big deal that I'm sick. Now I'm a little nervous about taking the dex. I've stopped for now, so I dont have to worry about interactions with my drinks (orange juice) and my cold meds.

When on the dex I completed an entire logic problem AND wordsearch in one sitting, this is the FIRST time in my life that Ive ever been able to do that so it is a very big deal, but now Im so nervous about taking the dex, because in my mind I link it with getting sick.

Do you think you may be throwing the baby out and keeping the dirty bath water here?

Who? Me? or chaotic??

If the question was aimed at me, no, I don't take antibiotics, not anytime recently, in fact I've only taken them twice in my entire life, the last time was years ago.

heh thought it was you not me.. but no I've not had any antibiotics.. I think I was incubating a cold and it produced some wild natural breath killers..
Cheers! Ian.

Sorry, Crazy Cutie, I was asking Itschaotic. I was just wondering if the bad breath could have been caused by an upset of the balance of acidophilus in the stomach; which antibiotics can do (a sypmtom of which is bad breath not caused by a lack of drinking water or dental hygeine). Oh well! :)

Been taking dex for 3 and a half years. My suggestions: keep drinking heaps of water, cut down your sugar intake, cut out caffeine and reduce your simple carbohydrates.

I have come to think this is good advise tudarose. Thanks for the confirmation. It's amazing how much fluid I can loose.. The carbs are a killer on any level for me. The coffee has been slowly fading from routine. Now it's once in a while..
Cheers. Ian.

Hey, I started on Dexedrine three days ago, and I've beem experiencing the same thing as you with the bad breath. I've been experiencing another side effect, dry mouth, with it too. It's kind of a bitter taste eh? I tried taking bottled water to school with me today and keeping the dry mouth away helped with the bad taste.

Ian

yup.. that's it...
My family thinks it smells like I've been smoking grass.. I haven't done that in a while.. hehe

I too have gotten dry mouth from Dexadrine at first but it goes away after a while...I guess me smoking contributes to that too, but as far as foul wind in my mouth I never had that problem with dex..just smoking. But smoking good for ya it calms your nerves:D

Hey, I'm taking Dexedrine too, I'm thirsty most of the time and my appetite has gone down substantially. When I first started on it I had the breath problem too, but that's improved.

Ian

it's better for me now.. I drink lots of water.. and I mean lots. Three liters a day or so brings up my fluids nicely. Some foods are worse than others but overall I still smell like I'm smoking dope all the time.. heh

I am have 12 dex a day and i am getting real bad headaches at night.. I am thinking maybe its due to not having enough water.. I drink a couple of litres a day... maybe 2... but i am thinking i need 4-6 L a day to get rid of the headaches with the dex.. the bloodstream needs to be diluted more i think.. anyone know of any research on this and if its true? Either way im going to try.
