View Full Version : Does the bloodwork test for HIV? VisualImagery 12-08-06, 02:04 AM Doctors order specific blood tests. No pdoc I have had ordered a blood test. An HIV/AIDs test would not usually be on the list. You can buy HIV/AIDS tests at the drug store or get a free one at many clinics, check the yellow pages. If you have HIV/AIDS, a doc would need to know, you can't take some meds. Hyperion 12-08-06, 05:45 PM I know that under some state laws (and possibly federal law, not sure), physicians must get your consent before testing for HIV/AIDS. A long time ago, I had recurring sinus infections, which turned out to be due to structural problems that prevented draining, but at the time we were worried about a possible immune system problem. My doc ran a bunch of blood tests, and figured that we might as well test for every possible immune system problem, including HIV just in case. While she could write up all of the main tests together, she had to get my permission to request the HIV test, and had to write it out separately (no problems found, btw). In addition, diagnostic tests cost money, and they aren't necessarily cheap. Your doc knows that he has to justify each test to the insurance company if he wants to get paid, so he's not going to just throw in random tests just for the hell of it, he's only going to test for what's necessary. In any case, a respectable, ethical physician should have no problem whatsoever with explaining which tests will be run and why if asked. msam76 12-17-06, 03:08 PM HIV tests are seperate from what the doctor usually works. Most places only do HIV testing on certain days. |
