View Full Version : Adderall and feminine chemistry/ph...
Hi ladies,
This is a highly personal and embarrassing question and I am a little embarrassed to ask it but I am very curious to know if any of you have had similar experiences.
Has anyone noticed an increase in yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis or other vaginal chemistry/ph issues while taking a stimulant medication? Has anyone discovered an unfamiliar odor or (*ahem*) discharge variations that only seem to be present with the medication?
I take frequent med breaks and often increase my dosage when more concentration is required and so maybe chemical/ph changes are more apparent to me then it would be for someone who takes it consistently...
Anyway, I am curious about other's experiences. Thanks in advanced.
MeMyself&I 12-19-06, 07:47 AM Oh yeah, changes galore! I have been doing a combination of weekly hydrogen peroxide douches (recommended by a former OBGYN), and eating yogurt every day, cutting down on sugar, and drinking lots of water. While all the symptoms have not gone away, they are under control.
The one that worries me the most, though, is the stupid UTI that I can't seem to kick. I get anywhere from UTI to a bladder spasm that makes it feel like a UTI. I don't know if there's a correlation between the meds and that. For that, I just drink lots of water and take daily cranberry pills. It's not completely gone, but at least it's not as bad as before.
So, the short answer, yes, some of us do experience discomfort on meds. It's a moist and sensitive area, and any changes in the body chemistry will affect them.
Good luck with yours!
barbeecain 08-14-08, 07:27 PM i have an increase in uti, yeast and a general decline in my immune system. I am not one to normally get sick but find myself getting sicker while on my adhd meds. Still trying to figure out how to supplement all the different ailments that have come about from taking meds.

If you take antibiotics for the UTI those will cause yeast infections. The spams you describe I have gotten from constipation but I am probably a bit older than you are - after a certain age every thing causes constipation -

Hydrogen peroxide I have never heard of that - I have heard of douching with yogurt - without the fruit of coarse and with live bacterial cultures every other day for a week but I haven't heard of the H2O2 ones before - interesting

I take l-lysine 1000mg which seems to help my immune system. . . . may want to check with your doc before adding any thing -
lightxosleeperx 10-01-08, 07:57 AM Well, I just went back on adderall and I already have a problem with UTI's as it is, but the reason I have so much trouble with them on adderall is because the medicine makes me have dry mouth, but I have no interest in drinking any kind of fluids what so ever. A lot of the day I have to force myself to atleast sip, which then creates in issue in my bladder and kidneys because the bacteria is just sitting there rather than being flushed out of my system.
Also, the yeast infections can be caused by many things and it could just be a simple coincidence. I get them rather often due to poor diet and apparently from the condoms my boyfriend was using. (The spermacide actually can cause them) You might want to look at these factors and talk to your doctor. I don't know how much you know about medicating a yeast infection, but there is a pill that can take care of it called difulcan. This will help so you won't have to buy any messy creams . :-) Good luck!
None that you listed except for increased urination. I go to the bathroom all the time now since being on Adderall.
Siren48 10-01-08, 06:08 PM if you get start getting the very beginning of a yeast infection there's this wonderful stuff called yeast guard. They're suppositories you use to prevent the infection from turning into anything. I've been able to prevent a good couple of infections by using these. I just get them at CVS. I haven't noticed the adderall giving me a problem, but I have to use the suppositories every time i use antibiotics.
I had a bad fall when I was four and have some scar tissue which makes me prone to UTIs.
The awesome news is that I've been drinking a lot of water so that helps my bladder and I've gotten into the habit of eating at least one or two yogurt cups a day which helps keep yeast at bay.
Can't believe I lucked out.
Yikes! Douching? Really?
Personally, I'm fairly prone to yeast infections/UTI's and I've found the following:
1) Don't douche! (for me anyway) this seriously causes more irritation and pushes bacteria further up inside you
2) Wear cotton underwear, and change it often--especially if you are in the midst of clearing up a yeast infection
3) Keep an OTC yeast infection kit on hand, particularly the one dose ones that comes with a cream to relieve the external itching--use it the second you recognize the symptoms: in canada they sell these kits OTC .. not sure about in the states, although, if you are Rx'd a kit in Canada, you can put it through your drug plan to save some cash.
4) Shower, and if infected, wash with either no soap, or a gentle soap like dove, make sure it's not 'anti-bacterial' because it will also kill the good bacteria in your body
5) If on medication, be sure to FINISH it all--don't start the meds, and then just 'stop' taking them because you're feeling better. The infection WILL come back, and it WILL be harder to get rid of the second time around. Unfortunately, I know this from experience as a dumb teenager
A couple of things:
-Cranberry capsules (they sell them at GNC) are a great alternative if you don't like cranberry juice. I don't mind it, but I take one with my meds anyways because a UTI is not worth the pain and embarrassment
-Probiotic yogurt is great too!
-Lots of water
-Take your medication regularly, you might be shocking your system by going on and off the meds like that..
On a non medication related note:
-Pay attention to how you wipe
-Bleaches or other clothing detergents can irritate you
-Avoid tight clothing/underwear
-Pee after sex
To MeMyself&I: Go to a doctor .. I don't know how you sit around feeling like you have a UTI or whatnot .. atleast go see a gyno .. that sounds excrutiatingly painful.
jenny78 10-02-08, 03:27 PM Hey girl, I know what your talking about. Id rather not get into detail on this public board on symptoms, but I did speak with my docter who perscribed me straterra. I tried to explaine my symptoms and it was like she never heard of this before. I felt like I was the only one ever to be going through this. Appreantly she was "unaware" of the medication ever causing these side effects. But, Im glad to see that its not "me" but the medication. (weew!) I hate the side effects so much that I stopped taking them and now stuck wondering what the hell Im going to do.
jenny78 10-24-08, 03:06 PM ok, so does anyone know how to stop this from happening?
Are there any home treatments to stop this from happening EVERYTIME I take the medicaion??

Ha ... well 2 months after posting that and I now have a UTI!
I was doing fine until a recent trip where I unconsciously did everything that promotes a UTI. I know I wasn't drinking enough water, but I wasn't thinking. Decreased water, tons of soda, spicy, high fat, high sodium foods, tub baths with anti-bacterial soap, and I was taking my usual Vyvanse but with a Dex boost because I was PMSing. AND, I didn't have my Macrobid pills.
My OB-GYN gives me a prescription of Macrobid. I've become so attuned, I can take 1 capsule when I know a UTI is developing - and that cures it.
Macrobid for me is great because I'm allergic to many other antibiotics and it basically kills the UTI bacteria without giving me other problems (like yeast infections).
None of the typical recommendations help me, including Cranberry juice and pills. My doc says that the chemicals (or whatever) in cranberry juice adheres to the lining of your urethra so bacteria can't "stick" and multiply.
