View Full Version : Strattera and CAFFEINE.
McHuman 12-21-06, 11:47 PM Although I failed miserably at trying to incorporate dexedrine into a strattera regiment, I'm deadly curious what CAFFEINE might do for the med.
Any Strattera users here drink coffee? Can you describe how much and what it does for you etc?
KingofArg 12-22-06, 10:39 PM I noticed that a little caffeine negatively effected the positive effects of Strattera. Strattera slows my brain down, caffeine speeds it back up. Caffiene has always had a strong effect on me. I've switched to decaf.
McHuman 12-22-06, 11:29 PM Cool makes sense, thanks kindly for the reply
netsavy006 12-23-06, 11:21 AM I would not drink or eat caffenated stuff while on strattera. This can make the side effects of the strattera worse. At least it did that on me. Strattera wasn't a good med for me anyways so I had to stop...
I drink caffeine, no problems.
~boots~ 12-24-06, 10:27 AM McHuman..how many posts did you start about the same topic of coffee??? I have seen about 6 already :-)
I have been on Strattera for about a month now and I was a huge coffee lover. I would normally have a quart of strong coffee a day. While taking Strattera I can't drink coffee. My favorite beverage is now tastes repulsive and makes me feel terrible. My stomach aches just looking at a cup.
It is a sad state of affairs :-(
EYEFORGOT 01-01-07, 05:22 PM I still drink 2 cups a day. Some days I have soda on top of that but not often. For me, Straterra clears my head and keeps me motivated, so no negative effects here that I'm aware of.
TheMiNd 01-01-07, 06:58 PM I don't know of any difference between strattera with and without caffeine, though sometimes caffeine works to counter the drowsiness caused by the strattera.
I have been on strattera for about two weeks. It makes me sleepy. The sleeppyness is welcome since stimulants have been have the opposite effect on for some time now.
I have no problem drinking coffee. It really helps to keep me from feelling like I need to nap all the time.
I have not experienced any other side effects of the medication other than sleepyness.
Drink Coffee,
Stay Alert,
Stay Alive!
I took Strattera some months ago, and it proved ineffective by itself for the short period of time that I was on it. However Strattera (75 mg) became increasingly effective with the more coffee I ingested, after 2-3 cups of coffee, I was on task and generally focused for at least a few hours. It's not something I would suggest doing day in and day out though.
My doctor speciffically told me to avoid caffine while takin strattera since it can negate the effects.
BananaSlip 02-18-07, 12:17 AM Coffee is the greatest invention ever! Just one cup first thing in the morning to help things get started. As soon as I get done with my coffee, my head starts tingling and clears up nicely. I've never experienced the negating effects against Strattera, but everybody's brains are different.
leemoore 02-18-07, 02:05 PM I was diagnosed with ADD a week ago. The doctor started me on 40mg of Strattera. While I noticed excellent immediate benefits in terms of focusing on a task, impulse control, reduced need of self gratification and I pretty much stopped overreating (I've struggled with food addiction most of my life), I have found that it does make a little tired and wanting to nap a bit. I drink 3-4 coups of coffee a day and I've noticed that Caffeine tends to reduce the negative effects of Strattera without hurting the positive ones. In fact i've started timing drinking a cup of coffee about 30 minutes after Strattera. So far this seems to be working for me but I'll see what my doctor thinks next week.
I have noticed that I'm not able to drink that much coffee or Diet Mountain Dew like I used to, and although it helps me a little when I do have some caffeine during the day.. I pay for it later at night with Insomnia and Restless Leg Syndrome if I over do it. I still have Insomnia and the early awakening (around 3-4am) regardless of the caffeine intake. Regular diet soda's don't seem to bother me with their normal caffeine amount, just the coffee, tea and diet Dew.
thrillseeker 04-04-07, 08:58 PM This is my first week on Strattera. I had Provigil, but unfortunately am now out. I've been pounding espresso from dawn till dusk, and it hardly affects me. I've been tired all day. I got off Adderall because it made me agitated and nervous, but I need strong stimulants to be fully alert. I was taking 60 mg Adderall / day. I'd like 800 mg Provigil: 100 mg does little, with 200 I'm halfway there. 400 & I'm good to go, but it only lasts 6-7 hours.
I've been on Stattera for three weeks now and when I drink coffee I fill like I'm flippin' out. I will drink decaf from now on.

What is wrong with you that you have to take that high of a dosage and drink that much coffee
willzzz 08-03-08, 06:22 PM Just recently started Strattera /w 10mg and since it's only day 4 I've already noticed the benefits of it including improved concentration, irritability, impulsivity, etc. But I've also noticed it does make me sleepy/tired (I can go take a nap every afternoon if I wanted) in the afternoons. Caffeine (I drink tea) has solved that problem. In my case part of it is my body hasn't fully adjusted to it but in any case a little bit of caffeine has done wonder for me & strattera.
skilganon 08-25-08, 01:40 AM i don"t know if this has happened to anyone, but I used to drink about 20 shots of coffee a day. But now i am finding that when ever i start drinking coffee on strattera, I start falling asleep. c an anyone tell me what is up about that. I have cut back to about 1 cup of coffee a day.
willzzz 08-28-08, 06:41 PM I've started to cut back on the caffeine unless I absolutely need it as it's giving me nausea if I have too much /w Strattera.

Any one else have this experience?
