Unfortunately now that the the drug that has worked best for me (5 mg brand dexedrine) has been discontinued, I am exploring other options.
From nearly all accounts, Mallinckrodt seems to be the preferred generic version of this drug. Would those of you who have tried this generic say it is the closest thing to brand name dexedrine? It seems like most accounts have been positive, has anyone had bad experiences with it?
Would those of you who have tried this generic say it is the closest thing to brand name dexedrine?
Without a doubt the closest thing to the brand name Dexedrine immediate release tablet, in my opinion.
I actually noticed a difference between the 5mg & the 10mg Mallinckrodt immediate release tablets, so I called Mallinckrodt to ask about it. The pharmacist I spoke to would not really answer my question directly, and continued to tell me (in different ways) how the active ingredient was the same one found in the brand name (which I knew already).
From my experience, Mallinckrodt's 5mg IR tablet is the closest thing to the brand name Dexedrine, but their 10mg IR is more like the brand name generic drug "DextroStat." As you know, Dexedrine's immediate release tablet was only available in a 5mg version. DextroStat on the other hand makes a 5mg & a 10mg IR tablet, and after several years of expereincing both, I honestly feel that the 10mg Mallinckrodt tablets are much more like the DextroStat 10mg IR tablets.
So, to make a long story short, the 5mg Mallinckrodt IR tablets are the closest thing you can get to the brand name Dexedrine IR tablets.
Hope this helps.

I'm going to share this because it is another experience than one of us has had. I will say that my dr & pharmacist have both told me that I'm the only person they have ever heard say this, but for whatever reasons it's true for me.
I took the Brand IR Dexerdrine that SmithKline made. And I took 10mg Dextrostat that Shire makes for app 3 yrs. Then for finicial reasons I had to take the Generic 10 mg Barr makes. I have been taking the Barr for app 6 yrs now & to be Honest the 10mg Barr works better for me than the 10mg Dextrostat made by Shire.
I have not tried the Mallinckroft Generic because for me the Barr works so well.
I'm not trying to cause any waves. Just add another experience to this Thread.

it is the inactive parts of the dex tabs because regardless of what brand I change to I get the "new med" side effects every month and for me the 5 mg dexedrine brand tabs and 10 mg dextrostat tabs seem equivalent in effect..
Hi...This is probably a bit off topic...
I have been on dex for about 6 months. I have only taken the IR versions made by either Mallinkrodt or Dextrostat after the brand name was discontinued.
Prior to dex, i had been on either ritalin, or adderall, for about 5+ years. Always IR versions.
it seems as if everytime i switch from one of these meds to another, i notice a very profound "effect" from the new med. It is usually a positive effect.
Then, as time goes on, there is virtually no (subjective) effect.
And this is also in spite of increasing the dosage.
When I switched to dex after many years on the others, it was without a doubt, the best of these meds. Smoother, and better in every way.
Now, for at least 3 months, even after my morning dose of 40mg IR...there is zero noticeable effect...
...and definately zero effect as a stimulant in all circumstances.....
I had just gotten off the phone with Glaxo, double-checking to see if maybe they were going to reintroduce the brand name ir once again, but, they are not.
I am seeing my Dr. today, and I was thinking about the idea of switching back to ritalin.
But NOT as a "permanent" switch....just as a "rotational" switch.
Has anyone else had this experience? Where the effects of these meds diminished over time, and rotating them seemed to "change" things? or, "shake things up", in a positive way???
I apologize if this is slightly off topic
