View Full Version : Tolerance question

In the past there have been many times that I have taken some type of medicine or aspirin, etc. and after a while it wouldn't work for me anymore, when in the beginning it had been great. This seems to happen with everything, or at least almost everything.

I have been taking Wellbutrin for a few months now and had only one good effect from it. This one good effect, ok I'll just say it, it increased my sex drive, but the first time I increased my dose, my God it was through the roof for about a week:D . It has now come down to what I think is a pretty normal level. (OMG, the things I share:o )

I started taking Ritalin almost 2 months ago, the first time I took 10 mg it seemed to work really well, my house was sparkling clean that day. But after that it didn't work, even when I upped it to 15mg. A few weeks ago the doc put me on Concerta, 36mg and even that isn't doing anything for me. I had some Ritalin left over, so one day I took 15mg of it along with the 36mg and still I felt nothing.

So my question is.... if I do tend to build a tolerance to meds easily, will that be the case with everything? Is that likely, unlikely, rare, etc.?

I am also wondering about others experiences with tolerance. Anyone else that has this same or similar experience?

I guess I'll just have to wait until I talk to the pharmacist or the doc.:faint:

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you hon. I've had meds work fast, but not build up a tolerance for them. They simply 'absorb' quickly, is I'm making sense.

Let us know what the doctor has to say. :)

sense made you, yup!:D
I see the psych on thursday. I tried taking 2 Concerta (36mg each) the other day, still did nothing. So I am sure we will be trying something else(probably Adderall), I can't imagine he would want me taking more then 72mg of Concerta, but who knows. I'll let ya know. Geez, I hope something helps soon, I need to get at least one thing in my life squared away soon or I'm gonna lose it!:faint: LOL
Just too much all at once!

Speaking from experience, nothing will ever feel "squared away". It just keeps flooding at you with no reprieve. One project might be technically "done" but the flood keeps coming, so all we've really done is take out a bucket.

Edifying, aren't I?

Geez, so much for that positive feeling I had!!! LMAO....just kidding.:D
I am still feeling so much better than I have in weeks, maybe even months. And you're not gonna ruin it! :p LOL
But I know what you are saying and you are right, there will always be something, I know that, but the difference now is that I finally feel like I can handle it, any of it, all of it, whatever comes, I'm ready for it!!!!:D

Maybe I should speak to my psych about wellbutrin...;)

You won't develop tolerance to wellbutrin. There are a few people that end up with it not working at all after a while. It just stops working.

There was one time where I was convinced that it was not working. I tapered of of it and my adhd came back in spades after about 4 days.

I've been on it for a couple of years now and it still works exactly the same. Yes, it does increase my lebido a bit.

Actually, I have been on the Wellbutrin for almost 3 months now and really have never felt anything good from it, except for the increase in my sex drive.
I have been taking the Concerta for almost a month now and have not felt a big difference.

One thing though that may have had an effect is that while finding out about the ADD and then getting medcated, that is when I started falling apart. I don't think it was the meds, I've just had a lot on my plate lately and been dealing with a lot of emotions. So I have been up and down, mostly in between though. So who knows, maybe I would have more down if I weren't on the Wellbutrin.
So it may have had an effect on my depression(possibly), but definitely not on my ADD. I don't feel any of the things that I have read that should be happening to me on a stimulant for ADD. I still have no focus, still have no energy, still a scatter brain, still forgetful, still unorganized. I guess it has helped me not get quite so overwelmed by the little things that used to overwhelm me. And I sometimes think just a little bit clearer....hense the positive attitude, I guess.

The literature I've read indicates that most folks with a correct ADHD diagnosis don't develop tolerance to ADHD meds. But you don't have to be on this site very long to see that lots and lots of people do develop at least a partial tolerance. I didn't think I had developed a tolerance after a year and a half on Concerta, but when I stopped taking it on a daily basis I found that on the days I did take it, I got way more done than when I was taking it every day, which sounds suspiciously like tolerance to me.

I found that combining some CBT stuff with meds helped more that relying on meds alone. Dr. Mel Levine's books (A Mind at a Time; The Myth of Laziness) got me thinking that while meds might be necessarily in some cases there can be other things going on that aren't especially helped by medication. He indicates that's it's more the inconsistent mental energy flow that is helped by medication in helping to focus attention; however that won't fix organizational problems, spatial arranging, etc. I've found the book Managing Your Adult ADHD by Sprich, etc helpful in getting more accomplished as well as taking Concerta on an as needed basis rather than daily (but that is a very personal thing -- what works best is different for all of us).

Take care,
